Dear Maggie

Who: William John HOWARD m. Mary HOLLINGSWORTH

What: Marriage

When: October 27, 1851

Where: Lorain Co. Ohio

Why: Because these are my Gr Gr Grandparents and all we have on them is a marriage date and nothing else. We do not know where they came from or when they were born or anything else except my Gr. Grandfather William Joseph Howard was born March 27, 1855. Three were three others sons of this union. We only have the first names, Albert, Edward, and John. Believe me we are at our wits end. My mother has been trying to find them for over twenty years. They were supposed to have lived in Elyria. They moved to Fairbury, Jefferson Co. Nebraska before 1880. Please help if you can. We would like even a clue to go on for this puzzle.

Thank you so much for your time and trouble.

If anyone has a Clara HAMPTON in their genealogy records anywhere after 1882, will you please let me know. She was my gr grandmother and I know she was in Jefferson Co. IA as late as 1882 or 1883, when she was widowed. She'd have been in her mid-20's and widowed there in 1882. She was born and raised in Ohio and went to Iowa after she married Levi HAMPTON in Gallia Co. Ohio in 1875. She probably remarried, but I cannot find a record on her.

Appreciate any clue.

Hi,
I have two brothers in my lineage, one was a lawyer and one a minister. I would like to find out if there are any records for them in their professions.

I know the Meth. Church has records on their ministers but I don't know what denomination Jacob was from. Perhaps someone from Wi can help me here as to what denomination to write to for records. Also would the Odd Fellows Lodge have any info since he belonged to it and can info be obtained from them?

Rev. Jacob MARK was b. 1829 Meigs Co Ohio and went into the ministry by 1870. The 1870 census says a Christian Minister and 1880 says Clergyman. He died in 1903 in the Haskins Church near Excelcior, Richland Co. Wi at a Conference being held there. This church is no longer standing today.

Wm MARK, his brother was b. abt 1831 in Meigs Co. Ohio and was in the Jackson Co, Ohio 1870 census listed as a lawyer. I don't know where or when he died as of yet. Am wondering if there is an association for Ohio that records the lawyers from that time period and might have his death recorded.

Thanks,
Selma

Hello
I am trying to locate where in Ohio that my ancestors came from. My ggrandfather, Lemuel BULL and his brother Franklin Bull were born in Ohio to a Catherine GARLAND and ? Bull. Mr. ? Bull died young and Catherine remarried an Isaac MENDENHALL of Iowa and had four more children: Mary B. Mendenhall Clough, William Mendenhall, Alice Mendenhall LITTLEFIELD, and Josie Mendenhall TROTTER.

Mary B. Mendenhall is said to be born in Maple Grove, Minn., however, Maple Grove, Minn. is not close to where the Mendenhall family, Lemuel Bull' family, or Franklin Bull' family settled in Minnesota. I have heard that there is a Maple Grove, Ohio and I am wondering if the family got the geographic location mixed up.

Franklin Bull was born abt 1854. He married a Mary C. AUSTIN of Athens County, Ohio in Anoka, Minn. Lemuel Bull married a (Nancy) Jane Chapman of Ohio in either Ohio or Minn. Mary B. Mendenhall was born April 1, 1859. Could you help me locate where Franklin and Lemuel were born and who their father might be?

I have heard of a published book called "The Bull Family of the Ohio Valley" (or something like that) but haven't been able to locate a copy. Any help or suggestions as to where to start to locate/pinpoint the family in Ohio would be appreciated.

I know eventually he settled in Shelby County. I would like to find out more on this. The problem is there is no Shelby County list. Is there a list that includes Shelby County? Does anyone out there have anything on Nancy GALLOWAY or where they could have married? I would appreciate any help on this. I am stuck out in California and my resources are limited. Some day I would love to go to Ohio and finish up on my research but I am unable to do that at this time.

According to obituary he had been living in Ohio since 1907.
His name has also been seen spelled Orvil, Orrvil and Orville.
My Grandmother, Helen Lucille RIFFLE, was born in Fostoria,
Seneca Co., Ohio in 1915, so I am assuming he lived in that
county during that time.

Gertrude RIFFLE (b:24 Jul 1892, d:May 1979)
Married twice - 1st CLARCK, 2nd Robert BURDGE

were living in Kansas, Seneca Co., Ohio.

Austin RIFFLE (b:7 Aug 1897 d:Oct 1973)
According to Orval's 1940 obituary Austin was living in

An Unknown RIFFLE female

1) A GGGUncle Frederick ELY, Jr (b:1830) who married a Mary Magdalene YOST (b:1834) who was the daughter of an Anastatius and Catherine YOST.

2) A GGGrandfather, Lewis ELY (b:1833 d:1913) who married an Elizabeth YOST (b:1836 d:1902). Both are buried in Coshocton Co., Ohio.

Both ELYs were the sons of Frederick ELY, Sr (b:1792) and Barbara SWITZER (b: ca1808). Although their parents were born in Germany both brothers, as far as I can tell, lived their lives in Coshocton Co., Ohio. I cannot speculate about the origins of the YOSTs.

After seeing many brothers marry daughters of the same parents I am wondering if this may be another case where this occurred.

If anybody has any information on:

Aren't there any Slovaks out there? My maternal grandmother was APOLONIA(not sure of the spelling?) and I believe her maiden name was ISTEK. ...or ISHTEK .She was born in Kosice Slovakia. She was married two times and had children by both men. After she was widowed the first time, she married again. She only had 2 sons and no grandsons that would have the name of her second husband, POPOVICH.

She lived in Lakewood, Ohio , a suburb of Cleveland. I know that she was a member of the St. Cyril and Methodius Parish. Does anyone have any familiarity with the above names or can help me trace the Slovak immigration to the U.S? Especially the Cleveland area.?

I'm sorry to say that I haven''t kept up with dad's side of the family but I think most of her descendents live either in the Cleveland area still or California. She was probably born in the mid-1800's. Dad was born in 1899 and he was one of the younger siblings. Any leads or tips would really be appreciated. Thanks

I am researching the Kaylor family. Jacob lived in Westmoreland Co. Pa in 1850. He left there with his family, showing up in Fort Wayne Indiana in the early 1860's In the 1880's he was back in Pa, in Westmoreland Co. We know that he stopped off in Ohio as 2 of his daughters were born in Ohio. But where in Ohio? his daughters names were Francis and Ohphilia, Jacob was not the only Kaylor to make this trip , Peter his father went also , and possibly a brother or 2 . Is there any one researching the surname Kaylor in Ohio that could maybe show some light on the subject ?

Ann Peale - born about 1859

Their parents were James Alex Peale and Emily Morris.

I haven't been able to find any information about Peale's in Ohio. Maybe the 1860 and older Ohio censuses show their children, I'm not sure. Any information on how to research them would be greatly appreciated!

Dear Friends,

I am in the process of collecting vital statistics, history, or any other information that can be found on the GOGGIN family. My purpose is for medical reasons, dealing with a genetic mutation. I have found odd records for Goggin family from all over Ohio and believe that they may all be related to John and Mary Goggin of Cleveland, Ohio. I am also collecting records from ANY location in the world as one other person has been found with the same mutation in Australia with a slightly different spelling of Goggin. This leads me to believe that this genetic mutation goes back to Ireland.

Because this mutation can cause four very different outcomes we are very interested in what the long term results are. We can ascertain a great deal of information just from vital records, but would also like to collect the family history as well, Although our primary search remains medical.

If during your search for your families,if you should come across information for any Goggin family, would you think of my family and forward it on to me? You will never know how much it will be appreciated by my family and other Goggin Families.

And if Frank Bates should be on this list "Thank You, Thank You for your kindness last year it is still bringing great blessings. It has led to part of the family being found"

Most Sincerely,
Karen Goggin

1. In the Mercer Co., Ohio Marriage Records 1828-1870, lists license to wed, number 17, for Asa H. SMITH to Caroline BODKIN. The marriage was solemnized on June 23, 1846.

2. Asa H. SMITH and Caroline are listed in the 1850 Auglaize Co. census as having a 2 year old child, Elizabeth.

3. According to Murray Cemetary, St. Marys, Asa Hinkle SMITH, first white child born in Auglaize Co., Ohio died Oct. 3, 1851. Grave marker by Auglaize Co. Historical Society states the same date. His wife, Caroline Bodkin SMITH, died in 1857.

4. Marriage certificate number 134 from Auglaize Co. Probate Marriage Records 1848-1871 reads as follows: The license to marry written on the left side of the certificate reads A. H. HINKLE to Levina COPSEY. Right side of the certificate says "I solemnized the marriage of Mr. A. H. SMITH and M. Levina COPSEY given under my hand this 16th day of December 1858.

5. 1860 census shows Asa H. HINKLE, wife - Levina, children - Lewis, age 7, Ellen, 5 and Linda, 8 Months. No Asa H. SMITH in census

6. Henry Franklin SMITH, born 1861. George B. SMITH, my grandfather born 1862 to Hinkle SMITH and Levina COPSEY.

7. Excerpt from an obituary written in The Evening Leader newspaper, June 14, 1932. Malinda Catherine SMITH was born Sept. 30, 1858, a daughter of the late Asa Hinkle SMITH, the first white child ever born in Auglaize Co. and Lavina SMITH. Louis SMITH of St. Marys is a half-brother.

8. Unconfirmed report states that there was yet another marriage by Asa Hinkle SMITH to a sister of Livina COPSEY.

My major questions are: If Asa Hinkle SMITH died in 1851, where did all of these wives and children come from? How can a marriage certificate bear 2 names? Why does the SMITH name show up in the 1850 census and not the HINKLE name. Why does the HINKLE name show up in the 1860 census but not SMITH considering that the wife's name is the same in both years? If Asa Hinkle SMITH did not die in 1851, then who is buried in Murray Cemetary? When DID he die and where ARE he and Livina buried? If you can shed some light on this genealogy puzzle, please contact me at [email protected] Thank you all for listening. Leila Smith Alfier

Hello List
I am lost. I have been searching on the net for references to the Lindley Branch of the tree. I am not sure where else I can look. I am trying to find references to:

Charles C. LINDLEY b. 12/08/1884 d. 05/01/1968
m. 08/25/1920
Jennie HISER b. 09/22/1888 d. 12/10/1963

Charles was said to be part American Indian? His Father was supposed to carry those genes. He was from Wayne, Ohio; Wood County, I think that Wayne is in Bloom Township, but I am not sure. Charles parents were:

James LINDLEY b. ? d. ?
m. ?
Cinderilla QUINN b. 06/15/1853 d. 01/28/1916

I believe Charles had a sister Blanche LINDLEY HULL. I do know that James and Cinderilla are buried in the cemetery at West Millgrove, and James' headstone is supposed to be a tree stump or look like a tree stump. I live in Illinois and I cannot get to Ohio to search for this. Is there anyone out there that can help me? I am ready to cut this branch off the tree, (it includes my mother-in-law) maybe it wouldn't be all bad.(Just kidding). I will be eternally grateful for any help.

I am searching for information on the Frederick J. and Dorothea MEINKING VOGEL Sr family of Cininnati (Hamilton) Ohio.

Frederick Johnathan VOGEL Sr. was born in Germany 22 Feb 1864 and immigrated as a child(so I am told) with his family. . It is said that they came from Bremen. .Those records I have been told were destroyed during WWII. .He died in 1956 in Cincinnati and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. . I remember Gr grandpa as a very quiet man who loved his beer. . he was short of stature, where I suppose I get my height, and always talked with his German accent inspite of the fact he had been here for a long time. .

I donot know my gr grandmother at all. She passed away before I was born,1940. From what I am told Dorothea MEINKING VOGEL(see notes at end of query) was born in Cincinnati 22 Feb 1866 and that is all I really know about her. . My aunt said that the day she died, from diabetes, her hair was as black a jet and there was no gray in it at all.

Frederick and Dorothea VOGEL had three children, all boys, and resided at 104 W 65th St in the Carthage area of Cincinnati.

Frederick J. VOGEL Jr b 10 Mar 1889 in Cincinnati
m. Grace Etta FAIR @ 1921-22
they had 2 daughters
Marjorie Helen b 1 Nov 1922 m. John Albert RAWE
Evelyn b 15 Dec 1924m Wm Sidney SMITH
He retired as a Machinist from Briggs Mfg. in Cincinnati, and died 17 Sept 1957. He was living at the family home when he passed away, and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Elmer George Valentine VOGEL b. 1893 Cincinnati
He never married and d. 1 Jan 1956 in Cincinnati and burial took place in the Veteran's Cem in Dayton OH.

Charles"Charlie" VOGEL was b 19 Nov 1890 d. 19 May 1905. . I was told that he was hit near the back of his ear with an ice-covered rock and died shortly afterward.

These are the persons buried in the cemetery plot with Dorothea MEINKING VOGEL. The secretery at the cemetery said that her stone says MEINKING and not VOGEL.

Looking for information: William H. Koontz b. 1846 VA m. 29 Dec 1864 in VA to Barbara A. Holler b. 1846 VA. The next record I have for them is the birth of their daughter, Delia Ann Koontz, in 1868 in Homer, Licking Co., OH. In 1875, Delia was attneding the Ohio School for the Deaf in Columbus, and her school records show that her parents were living in Knox Co., OH, and that she had a brother, George, and a sister, Libbie. I have been unable to find any other record of them in Licking Co., OH, Knox Co., OH, or any OH census records. I have been unable to find any information on George or Libbie, who I believe might have been born before Delia. I don't think Barbara went four years without having a chlid in those days. So, it's possible they were born in VA, but I found no record of them there. William fought in the Civil War with the VA Cavalry for one month in 1862. The only papers available were his medical discharge papers. They didn't have anything on them about his family, but he wasn't married until two years later.

The next info I have is when Delia married Frank R. Brown in 1890 in OH. I have been unable to find any death records for William and Barbara. William wasn't mentioned in his father's will in 1900 in VA, but old family photos would indicate that he was still alive then. I can't swear that the photos are William and Barbara, just a process of elimination and some guessing. So, it is possible he wasn't lliving in 1900.

I really need some advice on where to look for some information on this group on my next trip to Western Reserve. Any advice on that or anywhere else I might be able to dig up some info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help you can give me. Ginny

Hi, I am looking for any information on John Hoover and Maria (?). They came from Seneca County, Ohio to Iona, Kent County, Michigan. Their oldest child was Abraham born in 1831.

I would like to know who John's parents were, where they came from and who his siblings were.

Also the same for Maria (?).

Since their oldest child was born in 1831 it seems to me that his parents would have been born in the early 1800's.

Any help would be appreciated. John & Maria are my great, great grandparents.

Thanks in advance

Gustav Perlick m. my gr-gr-aunt, Louise Kuhl. They emigrated. His son, and perhaps Gustav too, opened a large greenhouse in the Toledo area, and were known all around. They began with flowers, using Holland bulbs. Then they branched out into vegetables, and even grew them there and sold them.

Does anyone know anything about this family? I don't know what happened to them.

They probably emigrated between 1870 and 1880ish....

Do the Toledo city directories go back that far?

I am within driving distance to Toledo. Where should I begin my search?

Dear Maggie

Thanks for your note of intro - hope I get this right as I'm quite new to all this.

We are trying to trace any of our late mother's family but, sadly, we have a pitfully small amount of very vague information; her family moved around & so did we.

Our mum
Mildred Marie McANDREW
was born July 1920 in Tippecanoe - but, apart from the fact that it was in the midWest, we don't know which one! Looking on the USGS site there would appear to be several......

Her mother was (Mildred?) Marie McANDREW nee NUGENT & died in 1930 when our mum was 10.

Her father was known as 'Mac' McANDREW
believed to be some sort of civil engineer travelling from contract to contract.
All we know about him is that he died in St Joseph's Hospital (or hospice) in St Louis MO, probably in the early/mid 1940s & that we think he had a lot of brothers!

When her mother died, our mother was sent to live with her cousins Dick & Iris & her Aunt Mary on their farm in, we think, Ohio. We don't know which side of the family Aunt Mary came from.

Mum had an older sister Eleanor. Date & place of birth unknown & last heard of in Phoenix AZ.

Her brother Nugent was given his mother's maiden name as a forename. His date & place of birth is also unknown & he is believed to have been lost at Pearl Harbor but we have recently been told this may not have been so.

If anyone has any information we'd love to hear from them.

I have many people in the main database who are from Ohio. There are over 8,000 surnames now, and if you should like more information about anyone there, please let me know!

There are also downloadable gedcom files for several surnames including Denton, Hunt, Moore, Chastain, O'Dell, Reneau, Plumlee, Cooper, French, Shipman, Huff and Baker. There is a great deal more information about these families on the gedcoms than you will see in the on-line database.

Dear Maggie,

Well here goes, I get the feeling that the group of people you have on your list come to you to seek answers to their genealogy questions, and look ups. If I'm incorrect just junk the rest of this.

My Gr. Grandfather George W. SINGER was born in Nova, Ohio, Ashland Co.May 24, 1844. He had 3 known brothers, Jerry, who was a prisoner at Andersonville, transferred back to Ohio as a prisoner exchange, and was on the ship Sultana when it exploded and burned to the ground. He was lost there. Another brother Jacob who married a Mary, and they lived outside of Ashland, Oh. He was a farmer, and lived there in 1906 for sure. Brother Will & wife, who lived NW of Ashland, in walking distance from Ashland.

I have information to the effect that Will & Jacob are buried in two local cemeteries there, but what I'm trying to find out is "Who" were their parents. My grandfather, son of George W. saw their graves when he was a boy in 1906, in the area between Ashland and Nova. He didn't put the names in his diary that he kept for 75 years, which I'm reading. I have absolutely no information on the parents of George, as I didn't know any of the family until just recently, and I have found several members, but they don't have any information.

Is there a way to find out who these people were? I tried LDS, it shows my Gr.Grandfather G.W.Singer married to Rachel Ann Underhill, but that's all. No parents listed for him. Do you think a Census might be the place to look? Would it list the children's names, so I would know the connection?

Sorry this is so long, there is one more person I'd like to find, her name is Arena Singer SAMSEL. She was the first born to George W. and his first wife, "Mollie". Mollie died soon after childbirth of their second child, a boy, and in 1878 George married Rachel. Arena was living with them at the time, but when she was a young girl he was living in Lubbock, TX at that time, he felt she wasn't getting the education she should have so sent her back to Ohio to live with her grandparents. She was living in Mansfield, in 1906. Her husband's name was Frank Samsel. They had 1 daughter and 3 sons, I believe. It was said she was a teacher for quite sometime, and then married Frank. She must of been born around 1866, as George was married the first time shortly after his 21st. birthday.

If you can direct me in the right way, or if you have information handy would a look-up be possible?

Thank you very much

Myrna Singer Casey

My name is Lisa (Dornbirer) Lauricella. I grew up in Bucyrus, Ohio. I've been interested in genealogy for about five years now and have a deadend I hope you can help me with.

My Grandmother was Helen Jane REINHART. Her mother was Mary BENNER, b. 25 Aug. 1893. She married Theodore Martin Reinhart, 15 Jan. 1918. I'm looking for info. about her parents. I think her mother's first name was Susan. Help!

I have a website devoted to genealogy and have Ohio material on it.
Feel free to visit!
Thank you,

Lisa

Hi Maggie, Hope that you are feeling much better very soon. Here is my look-up request for you....whenever you feel well enough to dig again!

I am trying to find something/anything on Peter MURRAY and his wife Nancy (possibly MCBRIDE) Murray when they lived in Columbiana County, OH.

We do have some census records of the family, but we think that there is a chance that Nancy may have died sometime between the 1830 and 1840 census. She had four children during the 1830s: Elizabeth b.1830, Nancy b.1832, Robert b.1834, and Susannah b.1836, but the 1840 census for Columbiana Co., Madision Twp. lists: 1 male bet. 50/60(Peter?), 1 male bet.20/30(who?), 1 male under 5(Robert), 1 female bet.15/20(who?), 1 female bet.10/15(Elizabeth), 1 female bet.5/10(Nancy), and 1 female under 5(Susannah).....no mention of a woman old enough to be his wife or the mother of these children.

Our knowledge of the family centers on their life in Gallia Co., OH after their move. The McBride maiden name comes from a newspaper article there regarding the marriage of one of the daughters. It said that she was the daughter of "Peter and Nancy(McBride) Murray." The wife is not mentioned in any census records in Gallia Co. either.

Thank you for any information you can find about Peter and Nancy in Columbiana Co.,OH. Sharon Walton, Lancaster, OH

Louis & Madeline came from France to OHIO (we think Stark, Carroll, or perhaps other counties). We think their family may have comprised 5-7 children who may have all been born in France. Some of their children stayed in OHIO, while Louis, Madeline, Marie & Mathias went on to southeast MO (New Hamburg, Scott Co., MO).

Mathias married Theresa MARTZ...perhaps in OHIO. We are looking for proof of a marriage. They did have a few children in Ohio before going to MO.

All clues are appreciated.

Their son Matthias Goeke is an ancestor that I need more infor on. He married Bernadina Ruemping and this is the family line that I am trying to connect. I have severalold photographs and biological information on the John Sherman family. Bernard Sherman (a descendant of John Sherman) married Maria Elizabeth Goeke and the infor mation on Elizabeth Goeke is greatly needed to complete my trace. I would be happy to share infromation that I have also. Dear BISSELL, SUTHERLAND, PUTNAM, MCCAY or related researchers,

I have a book called A Tribute to Anna Sutherland Bissell by Her Children. It is the life story of the wife of Melville R. Bissell who started the Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company. This book looks to have been privately published and the last page says The most recent date referenced in the book is as follows
- "On November the 8th 1934, the spirit of Anna Bissell was released . . . "
- so it must have been published sometime after 1934.

The BISSELL family apparently lived in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Michigan, and the SUTHERLAND family in De Pere, Wisconsin, and River John, Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

Of genealogical interest: "Anna Sutherland BISSELL was born December 2, 1846, the youngest of five children. Her father, William SUTHERLAND, a Scotch sea- captain, settled in the village of River John, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Her mother was Eleanor PUTNAM, daughter of Charles PUTNAM, one of the early pioneers of Canada."

The BISSELL children (c. 1934) were as follows:
Mrs. A. B. McCay, Pasadena, CA
Mr. Harvey Bissell, La Crescenta, CA
Mr. Irving Bissell, Grand Rapids, MI
Mr. Melville Bissell, Jr., Grand Rapids, MI

I hope this info is of use to someone doing this family's genealogy. If I can be of further assistance, please e-mail me directly at [email protected], as I am not a member of your list and do not receive these postings. Best wishes.

Copying my report to Gloria to Magggie's database with the hope that these new surnames may strike a chord with someone else; if so please contact me or Gloria Eaton at [email protected].

This is information gleaned from a collection of genealogical and historical writings collected in Clermont County, Ohio in 1980.

Hilda BLAKNEY, of Arlington, Texas wrote about the Clover neighborhood - on the fringe of the Brown-Clermont county line, near Tate Township. This is based on her childhood experiences and stories told to her by her grandmother Ruth CRAWFORD MUSGROVE.

Her family's two adjoining neighbors were German, the WURZBACHERs (which she says was pronounced "Woodsbaker") and the KNABES (which sounded the K, as K-Nabe) Here is a summary on Gloria's ancestors:

Fred Wurzbacher, born in Germany, wounded in the Civil War

Barbara Wurzbacher (nee FUNK) was "well educated in German but could read no English. Her children could only write English, so she always brought her mail to us to read."

She received a pension check every three months [Fred was dead]

Sons: Fred and Henry

Daughters: Anna Levi, Barbara Williams and Minnie DAUGHERTY.

There is other charming information on her personality and that of her son Henry, but I'll mail this to Gloria. Gloria's ancestor, daughter Lizzie MALLOTT, was dead and buried in same graveyard as her father (and eventually mother) by the 1910-1920 time-frame related by Hilda Blakney.

The cemetery inscription book for Clermont County lists Fred and Barbara as WURSTBACKER - yet another spelling of the surname.
