Michael STIMMEL was born 1786 in Frederick Co MD. Moved with his parents, Johann Jost and Hannah (STOKER) STIMMEL to near Romney, Hampshire Co VA in 1795. In 1810 Michael and wife Catharine PLUM moved to the Rennick farm, at South Bloomfield, Pickaway Co OH and operated a blacksmith shop for two years, then moved to Hamilton Tp, Franklin Co OH. Michael died 1859 in Franklin Co, and is buried in his farm cemetery, now at northeast corner of Parsons Av overpass at I-270.

His grandson, Smith Stimmel, was a sergeant in the Union Light Guard, Abraham Lincoln's ceremonial unit of 100 mounted volunteers organized in 1863 by Ohio Gov David Tod. Smith Studied law at Ohio Wesleyan Univ and Cincinnati Law School, practiced at Carthage until he moved to Fargo, Dakota Territory in 1882. Smith was the last president of the Dakota Territorial Council in 1888.
