Surnames: ECKERT, FICKEL, FICKLE, MADDEN, TENNANT, WILSON
Researcher: Mary Saban    Email: [email protected]
Date posted: Saturday, August 22, 1998

My g. grandfather was Joshua WILSON born in Defiance, Ohio. We have his birthdate as August 16, 1850. He died in Denver, Colorado in 1922. He married Adaline ECKERT May 11, 1876 in Defiance. They had two sons Clarence Delbert and John Henry, both born in Defiance. Also raised a Jenny TENNANT (either adopted or foster daughter). Here is my dilemma: Joshua WILSON was born to James WILSON and Mary FICKLE. Shortly before Joshua was born, James WILSON was killed in a steamboat accident down near Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio. He had one, maybe two older brothers who went off to the Civil War and never returned (no names). After many years of trying to locate the history of James WILSON and Mary FICKLE, I have finally located her. We knew she had remarried John H. MADDEN. I located that marriage in Putnam County on November 5, 1857. Then I located a biography of John H. Madden in Mills County, Iowa. It listed Mary's parents as John and Rachel FICKLE of Perry County, Ohio. I have pieced together her siblings somewhat -- Eli, Joshua and John. Mary was born in 1833. That meant she was only 17 or so when Joshua was born in 1850 and one or maybe two older sons? That didn't sound logical. After digging out some old papers, letters, etc., I realized the following. Joshua claimed he was born in Defiance County and returned there from Iowa when he was grown. After examining his Colorado death certificate with a magnifying glass, his birthyear may possibly be 1856. Now that sounds more logical. Does anyone in Defiance County have access to marriage records? If so, is there a marriage in the early 1850's of a James WILSON and a Mary FICKLE (may be spelled FICKEL)? What about birth records? I need to verify Joshua WILSON's birthdate of August 16, 185? Was there a land record for a James WILSON? Does Defiance County have birth and marriage records back that far? Any help and/or info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for the Defiance County family of Oliver T. SMITH and wife Mary Catherine (Molly) BROWN. The family was living in Sullivan Twp., Illinois, at the time of the 1900 census. According to that record, Oliver T. SMITH, sometimes referred to as O. T. SMITH, was born in Ohio in December of 1861. Census data indicates that his father was born in Virginia, his mother in Ohio. Wife Mary Catherine BROWN, called Molly in both the 1900 and 1910 censuses, was born in Illinois in August of 1869. .Known children: son Ray McRinley SMITH, born Jan 1897 in Illinois; daughter Marjorie M. SMITH, born about 1903 in Illinois. Sometime between 1900 and 1910, the family moved to Ohio, the state in which Oliver was born, and were recorded in the 1910 census, Defiance County, Farmer Township, where Oliver was a farmer. Current information indicates that the family continued to live in Defiance County years after the 1910 census, and it is possible that descendants or collateral relatives still live there. Mary Catherine BROWN (Molly) was the daughter of Curtis William Brown and Manerva Price, my great-grandparents, who lived in Lovington, Moultrie County, Illinois. Thank you for your attention.
