RETTIG, SNYDER posted by Constance Snyder on Saturday, November 4, 2000

Our family stories say there were 12 children of Adam RETTIG, Civil War vet, (or John Adam RETTIG), yet we can't definitely identify which Adam RETTIG is our great-grandfather, married to Mary and the father of our grandma Wilhelmina (Minnie), RETTIG. Minnie's birth record unrecorded/lost. She married Francis SNYDER of Galion in 1899, (another mystery as Francis was an orphan); described her father, Adam, as a brick maker who fought in 11 major battles, carried Bucyrus, (or Galion?) 4th of July parade flag for years because he was so tall. Can anybody shed some light on this family's history? Would be so grateful.

STRAUS, STRAUSE, STROUSE posted by Kaye Strause on Monday, November 13, 2000

I am searching for any information on Sarah STRAUSE/ STRAUS/STROUSE who died in 1866 in Galion, Crawford Co., Ohio. She was the wife of J.W. STRAUSE who could have been the postmaster there around the same time. I am also looking for their daughter-in-law, Susan STRAUSE who also died in Galion in 1867. She was the wife of John STRAUS, and mother of 3 daughters, Jemima, Sarah and Ellen. Through my research some of J.W. and Sarah's children could have settled in the area after J.W. and John moved on to Michigan in 1868. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. BARRY, BISHOP, DAVIDSON, EGAN, MACSWEENEY, OBRIAN, WATERHOUSE, WHITE posted by Julie Bishop Rice on Wednesday, November 15, 2000

I have just learned that my grant-grandmother, Julia WATERHOUSE, may have been born in Crawford County in the mid 18th century. A distant cousin found a listing for the family, headed by father John N. WATERHOUSE, in Galion in the 1860 census. I have the following information from my cousin but I do not have a copy of the data from the 1860 census. John WATERHOUSE, M, would have been about 32 at the census. Other records lead my cousin to believe that he died in Galion but I do not know what year. Apparently from the 1860 census, my cousin found that he was a stonecutter, had property in 1860 in Galion, valued of real estate $1500.00, probably a house in town, personal value $500.00. Margaret(te) MACSWEENEY WATERHOUSE, F., wife, born in Ireland. She died in Ft. Wayne in 1897, having traveled there with her children when some of them moved on. Children that we know of: Mary E, one month old in the August 1850 census of Morrow County; John H. born 9-12-1851 died 1-19-1939, moved to Fort Wayne at some point; Ellen born 1850s, died ?, married a BISHOP, brother to my great-grandfather and lived most of her married life around South Bend, Indiana; Margarette A., born 1850s in Galion, married a ? BARRY and died in Marion, Ohio unknown year; Edward, born 4-19-1856, Crawford County, Ohio died 4-11-1924 Fort Wayne, Indiana. This is the great- grandfather of my distant cousin who has done the original research. Julia, my great-grandmother, was probably born about 1858 or 1859, probably in Galion. She married a John EGAN in Barrien County Michigan in 1874. I have no idea where he is from. He died a few years later and she is widowed with one small son. She then marries my great-grandfather, Manley BISHOP and they live in the Niles, Michigan area. I have no idea where he comes from. In the 1850 census, the whole family is listed in North Bloomfield Township, Morrow County. I wrote to the Morrow County Genweb page and Herber Warner from their group has found a number of records there, including the location of the family farm which appears to have been purchased between 1840 when they were not on the census and 1850 when they were. The farm is only about 1 1/2 miles south of Galion so he suggests that I give you all the members of the earlier generation to see if there are other children and/or grandparents that end up in Crawford County. From the 1850 Census, Morrow County, North Bloomfield: WATERHOUSE, John N., 22, M. Laborer; WATERHOUSE Margaret, 19, F., Ireland; WATERHOUSE, Mary E., 1 month, F. (first child); WATERHOUSE, William P., 53, M., stone mason, New York; WATERHOUSE, Permelia, 44, F; WATERHOUSE, George C., 17, M, Laborer, (married Harriett WHITE, 09 Dec. 1852); WATERHOUSE, Elizabeth, 15, F. (married James OBRIAN, 14 July 1853); WATERHOUSE, Benjamin, 13, M.; WATERHOUSE, William B., 10, M.; WATERHOUSE, Thomas, 4, M. (married Flora B. DAVIDSON 09 Jan 1871). I also know that the family was Catholic if that helps. Thank you for anything you can supply. Julie Bishop Rice

GEORGE, MARTIN posted by Toni Darwin on Saturday, November 18, 2000

I have a Norman GEORGE who I'm having a hard time tracking down. Sometime in the early 1930's, he came to live with my uncle, Samuel MARTIN, in Jermyn, Lackawanna County (once part of Luzerne), Pennsylvania. His brother, first name unknown, lived with Samuel's brother, William MARTIN. Norman married Samuel's daughter, Sarah (born 1918) and died during WWII. I've heard that Norman's mother died and his father was unable to care for the boys so they were sent to live with relatives (my uncles). Since I have MARTIN relatives in Crawford County (Bucyrus), I was wondering if maybe, just possibly, Norman and his brother may have come from there. Toni Darwin
