Following is our meeting schedule for 2003. Most of our meetings will be scheduled for the 2nd Monday of the month, unless otherwise noted here. See below for addresses. Monday, February 10 at 6:45 PM,at the Cuyahoga County Library Independence Regional Branch Independence, Cuyahoga County Planning Meeting ~~~~~ Monday, April 14 at 7:00 PMat the Cuyahoga County Library Mayfield Regional Branch Mayfield Village, Cuyahoga County Guest Speaker: Joe Hannibal, Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology, Cleveland Museum of Natural History will speak on Why are there so Many Marble Gravestones in the Midwest?: Documenting the Rise and Fall of Marble Use in Northeatern Ohio Cemeteries Early gravestones in northeastern Ohio, and the United States in general, were quarried locally. Later, marble and granite were imported from afar. Stone choice was influences by an assortment of factors, including the Greek Revival movement and the effect of acid rain. In this talk, Joe Hannibal will explain just why there are so many marble gravestones in the Midwest-and why marble is seldom used today. He will also tell tales about his formal explorations of cemeteries in northeastern Ohio and less formal explorations of cemeteries here and abroad. ~~~~~ Monday, May 12 at 7:00 PMat the City of Independence Civic Center, Willow Room, located at Selig Drive and Cathy Lynn Drive, just behind the Independence Library Independence, Cuyahoga County. Guest Speaker: William R. Halley, General Manager Riverside Cemetery will speak on The History of Riverside Cemetery Mr. Halley will tell us about his now 127-year-old historic Riverside Cemetery located in the Brooklyn Center Landmark District on Cleveland's west side. ~~~~~ Monday, July 14 at 6:45 PMat Woodvale Cemetery, 7535 Engle Road, Middleburg Hts., Cuyahoga County. Woodvale is located at Engle & Fowles Road. Directions: From I-71: use Bagley Road exit, turn west onto Bagley, then south on Engle. The cemetery entrance is on the left just past the railroad tracks. We will meet at the cemetery office. Please wear appropriate clothing. Mini-Workshop: How to Read Fading Gravestone Inscriptions Katie Karrick, Gravestone Preservation Consultant, will demonstrate sure-fire methods of reading fading gravestone inscriptions using non-invasive procedures. If your organization would like to host an OCPS meeting or schedule a presentation, please mailto:[email protected].Speaker presentations are available and explain the goals and objectives of OCPS and how we can be most effective in preserving our cemeteries. It also includes the types of monumentation that warrant study and documentation, as well as cemeteries and memorials in need of restoration and preservation. Open discussion, project suggestions and volunteer referrals will be enthusiastically encouraged. |
