Jewell Family Burial Ground

On April 20, Diane Hoffart of Lake County sent us an email after her initial contact several weeks earlier. She had contacted Katie Karrick about this family plot containing two gravestones near Hermitage Road in Concord. On April 21 The News-Herald reported on the ensuing situation when it was discovered that the property was slated to be developed as a new housing community.

She had taken pictures of the grave markers clearly showing the 1815 and 1825 dates for Sally and Whitney Jewell and acquired additional information about the Jewell family from a 9-year-old neighbor who had selected this pioneer family as the topic for a school report.

On April 24 a Planning Commission meeting took place in Painesville where several people spoke about the necessity to retain the historical integrity of this burial place. The Planning Commission is very sensitive to this issue and will acquire further information about the project. It is suggested that anyone concerned about the fate of the Jewell family burials will contact the Lake County Planning Commission at 440.350.2740 to find out the date of the next meeting so they can be included among those who share our desire to see this cemetery preserved.
