James M. Jewell, one of the highly esteemed residents of Middletown, is now living retired from business cares, having earned his present leisure by years of industry and the practice of thrift. He was born at Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, in 1840, a son of John D. and Jane (Milner) Jewell, both of whom were natives of Hamilton. The paternal grandfather, Elijah Jewell came from Maryland to Butler county, Ohio, probably as early as 1796. Locating at Hamilton, he followed his trade as a millwright there until his death, which occurred in 1858. The maiden name of his wife was Lavina Whitehead, and she was brought to Cincinnati, Ohio, at an early day. Both she and her husband were devout members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and very active in it, assisting in founding that denomination at Hamilton. James M. Jewell was reared under the parental roof, and early taught the dignity of honest labor and the necessity to save money earned through industrious habits. He was given a better educational training than is afforded to some even in these days, and certainly fell to the lot of but few when he was young, as he was sent to Dayton, Ohio, to pursue his studies.
Completing them, he went to Maysville, Ky., and while living there
enlisted for service in the war between the states in Company I,
Sixteenth Kentucky Infantry, and was in the service for three years and
some months, after which he was honorably discharged. Returning home,
Mr. Jewell became a salesman for the Singer Sewing Machine company, and
sold their product over a wide territory for nineteen years, and during
that period built up an extensive acquaintance and made many warm
personal friends. Leaving the road Mr. Jewell then established himself
in a grocery business at Middletown, conducting it until 1916, when he
retired, and since then he has occupied his attention with looking into
civic matters, and national policies, being very well posted. In 1865,
he was married to Miss Martha Baggs (Biggs)
of Montgomery county, Ohio, born June 18, 1845, a daughter of Steven and
Nancy (Mahoney) Baggs (Biggs) of Greene
county, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Jewell have two children, namely: William and
Charles, both of whom live at Middletown. Mr. Jewell is a Republican,
but has not sought to bring himself before the public as an office
seeker, nor has he cared to permit the use of his name on the party
ticket. His popularity has always been great. Both he and Mrs. Jewell
belong to the Methodist Episcopal church, the same one his grandparents
were instrumental in founding. His wife's father lived to be 102 years
of age, and when he died had never worn glasses, and had enough of his
own teeth to do away with the necessity of false ones. Judging by the
alertness and keen intelligence of Mr. Jewell, he bids fair to attain to
a ripe old age himself, and as each year adds something to his store of
knowledge, longevity on his part will be a distinctive benefit to his
community.

James G. LUMMIS was born in Lemon Township in 1830, being the son of John LUMMIS and Ann BRIDGE. They were both born in Middletown. Joseph LUMMIS, his grandfather, who was one of the pioneers in this county, was an old Revolutionary soldier, as was also James G. LUMMIS's great-grandfather, on his mother's side, the Rev. James GRIMES, the pioneer preacher and cabinet-maker. Mr. LUMMIS was married in 1859, at Middletown, to Mary F. DEARDORFF, daughter of Jacob DEARDORFF and Mary KENNEDY. The latter is still living at Dayton. Mrs. LUMMIS was born in Middletown in 1840. They have had six children. Frank K. LUMMIS was born June 30, 1860; an infant was born April 22, 1862, dying the same day; George D. was born May 10, 1863; Charles A., May 15, 1865; John H., August 21, 1874; and Harry M., November 29, 1875. The latter died November 6, 1879. Mr. LUMMIS was treasurer of Middletown for two years, beginning in 1871, and is also a member of the school board, commencing in 1877, and serving three years. He was not a member in 1880, but was re-elected in the Spring of 1881. His wife's brother, Captain J. K. DEARDORFF, of the Thirty-fifth Ohio, was killed in the battle of Chickamauga. Mr. LUMMIS is a merchant.

Daniel MCCALLAY, president of the First National Bank of Middletown, was born August 10, 1839, at Dayton, Ohio, being the first son of Henry and Anna (MCKNIGHT) MCCALLAY. His father was a native of Pennsylvania, and his mother of New Jersey. They removed to this State with their parents about 1830. The father early learned the wagon-maker's trade, at which he labored in Miamisburg, that being the place where his parents settled. He afterwards followed his trade in Dayton, where the subject of this sketch was born. Returning to Miamisburg, he engaged in the hotel business. The MCCALLAY House, of that place, was conducted by him until about 1857, when he removed to Middletown, where he kept what was then and is now known as the United States Hotel. This he conducted till 1861, being compelled to withdraw from business on account of failing health. He died the year following, in 1862, at the age of forty-nine. His widow survived him but three years, dying in the year 1865, at the age of forty-nine, also.
At the age of eighteen, Daniel engaged as clerk in the dry goods store of Jacob LEIBEE, of Middletown. He continued in his employment for three years, till 1861, when he was made a partner in the business. The firm of LEIBEE & MCCALLAY was continued till 1870. Mr. MCCALLAY then withdrew from the dry goods trade, and with the proceeds of nine years' prosperous business, engaged in the lumber and grain trade in the country with Mr. J. M. ROBINSON, a silent partner. They carried on a large business, both in Middletown and Franklin, till 1877. Mr. MCCALLAY was the first to build a grain-house in Middletown with modern conveniences, constructed so as to admit teams and wagons, by which means the grain could be dumped under a roof.
In 1877 Mr. MCCALLAY, in company with his brother-in-law, Mr. Robert WILSON, bought the tobacco factory then carried on by Mr. P. J. SORG, Mr. John AUER, and Mr. WILSON. Mr. MCCALLAY and Mr. WILSON bought the interest of the other partners. A large addition to the factory was soon built, and the enterprise greatly increased. The original capacity of four hundred thousand pounds per year was increased the first year to nearly a million, and the second year to nearly two million pounds, which is its present annual product. The plug tobacco manufactory of WILSON & MCCALLAY is one of the largest west of the Alleghanies, and gives employment to upward of three hundred operatives. In 1878 Mr. MCCALLAY disposed of his real estate and invested it in stock of the First National Bank of Middletown. The year following he was made one of the directors, and at the election of January, 1882, was chosen its president. The capital of the bank is now one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, with fifty-five thousand dollars of surplus, of which Mr. MCCALLAY owns one-sixth. Mr. MCCALLAY's religious affiliations are with the Presbyterian Church, of which he has been a member since 1875.
On the 23d of October, 1859, Mr. MCCALLAY was married to Miss Mary E. LEIBEE, daughter of Jacob and Sarah LEIBEE, of Middletown. Mr. LEIBEE, who was Mr. MCCALLAY's first employer and partner, died June, 1876. His wife had preceded him but a few months, having died in November, 1875. Two children have been born to Mr. and Mr. MCCALLAY, both living. Mary E. was born July 15, 1862, and Edwin L., born July 30, 1874.
Edmund L. MCCALLAY, commercial traveler in tobacco, was born in Miamisburg, Montgomery County, Ohio, June 15, 1842. He is the son of Harry MCCALLAY and Lydia Ann MCKNIGHT, who came to this county in the Spring of 1857. William MCCALLAY served in the Mexican War. Edmund L. MCCALLAY enlisted in Company D, Ninety-third Ohio Volunteers, August 5, 1862, and was taken prisoner at the battle of Stone River, December 31, 1862, being confined in Libby Prison three months. On being paroled, he was sent to Annapolis, Maryland, and from there to Camp Chase, where he acted as a clerk in the office of the provost-marshal, Captain John W. KYLE. He remained there nearly one year. Securing an appointment as second lieutenant United States Colored Infantry, March 4, 1864, and passing a satisfactory examination before a board of regular army officers at Louisville, Kentucky, he was sent on to Camp Delaware, Ohio. He was appointed post quartermaster and commissary in April, 1864. On application, he was relieved by the governor and sent to the front in August, with two hundred and forty recruits. He was ordered to Washington, and appointed assistant aid-de-camp to General YEOMAN, being promoted to first lieutenant, August 10. After being relieved, he was again appointed an aid-de-camp to General A. M. BLACKMAN, and shortly after made brigade commissary. During the next few months he served as aid-de-camp and acting assistant-general, being appointed post adjutant at Smithsville, North Carolina, in September, 1865. He was mustered out at Camp Chase, in October, returning to Middletown,, where he went into the dry-goods business. Shortly after he received an appointment as second lieutenant in the regular army, to date from July, 1866. He was ordered to Fort McPherson, where he was till May, 1867, and was afterward stationed at several military posts. He resigned his position as first lieutenant December 31, 1870. He participated in many engagements with the Indians while stationed at Forts C. F. Smith and Phil. Kearney. At present he is a traveling salesman for WILSON & MCCALLAY, plug tobacco manufacturers.

THE REV. ALEXANDER MEHARRY, D. D.
Although only a resident of Eaton a few years, the citizens of the place
feel themselves largely indebted to the minister of the Gospel whose
name stands at the head of this article. They have a high regard for his
character and cherish lovingly his memory.
It was principally through the energy and zeal of the Rev. Alexander
Meharry that the Methodist Episcopal society of Eaton secured their
beautiful house of worship, unrivaled by any in the State or in the
western country, except a very few in the large cities, and one of the
chief, if not the leading architectural ornament of the village.
As the agent who brought about
the existence of this superb church, and no less from the fact that the
last years of Mr. Meharry's life were spent in Eaton, and that he was
laid away to his final rest in Mound cemetery, the people of Eaton have
a peculiar interest in the "good old preacher," and it is fitting that
there should be preserved for them the record of the life which came to
the close of its earthly chapter in their midst.
Alexander Meharry was born in Adams county, Ohio, October 17, 1813, and
died in Eaton, November 10, 1878, in the sixty-fifth year of his age,
and the thirty seventh of his ministry. His father, Alexander Meharry,
was born in Ireland, August 5, 1763; married Jane Frances, May 7, 1794,
and soon afterward came to America; tarried four years in Pennsylvania,
and in 1798 emigrated to Adams county, Ohio. He possessed remarkable
energy and industry, and was a zealous Methodist. He was instantly
killed by the fall of a tree while returning from a camp meeting in
1813, and his wife was left with a family of seven sons and one daughter
to care for unaided. The youngest of the children, the subject of this
sketch, joined the Methodist church at the age of fourteen. He was
reared on a farm, with only pioneer school advantages.
The first eight years of his majority were spent in a store at Ripley,
Ohio, where he made such a reputation for integrity that he obtained the
loan of one thousand five hundred dollars on no other security than his
individual note. In September, 1841, he joined the Ohio conference as an
itinerant preacher, and subsequently rode the circuits of Blendon,
Bainbridge, Dunbarton, Deer Creek, and Frankfort, in Ohio, and Maysville
in Kentucky. In September, 1848, he became the first Methodist city
missionary in Cincinnati, and stood heroically at his post during the
ravages of cholera in 1849-50- In September, 1850, he was appointed
financial agent of the Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware, and with
the exception of one year gratuitously given as agent to the Springfield
Female college, served six years. In September, 1857, he became pastor
at Franklin, Ohio, where in two years he built a church edifice, besides
liquidating some debts. In 1859 he took charge of the church in
Middletown, and in 1861 became pastor of Finley chapel in Cincinnati,
and was among the first of the clergymen who advocated the employment of
colored troops in the Union war.
From 1863 to 1866 he was stationed at Wilmington, where he erected a
church edifice. He then became agent of the Wesleyan Female college at
Cincinnati. The old building on Vine street had been sold for debt, and
a new structure would be erected. He succeeded, although many obstacles
opposed, in securing the erection of the present building, which is an
ornament to the city and a monument to Methodism. In the fall of 1868 he
became pastor at Eaton, and remained three years, within which time the
present house of worship was built. In 1871 he was appointed presiding
elder of the Ripley district, and in 1872 transferred to the Springfield
district. In 1875 he settled in Eaton. In 1877 the Athens Wesleyan
university, of Tennessee, conferred upon him the degree of doctor of
divinity. In 1878 he was appointed financial agent of the Delaware
Wesleyan university. During a service of thirty-seven years he travelled
nearly forty-five thousand miles, received into church connection over
three thousand persons, and raised as agent for colleges and churches
over one hundred thousand dollars. Since 11874 he had held superannuated
relations to his conference. His long and active service had given him a
warm place in the hearts of the multitudes for whom he had labored.
He was twice married. August 14, 1844, he married Ann Ransom, a niece of
Governor Worthington, of Ohio.
She died June 22, 1847. On May
1, 1856, he married Eliza Ann Ogden, of Clark county, Ohio.

I am sending this request for information to several organizations since
it is not clear to me who might have the answer to my questions. My
questions relate to the tombstone of Emma
Mewma which
is located in the Middletown Pioneer Cemetery, Square 5, lot 18 in
which John Mumma (1780 - 1849) is buried along with his descendants.
John Mumma is the progenitor of the Butler County Mumma families and
owned the Madison House hotel at the time of his death in 1849.
Shown below is a photograph of Emma's tombstone which is posted on
RootsWeb.

The MEWMA surname carved on the tombstone is simply WRONG! It should
have been spelled as MUMMA as are all of the other tombstones of this
family and I am trying to understand how this error probably happened
and suggest that a Note might be inserted in the MUMMA section of the
cemetery listings, pointing to this incorrect spelling. I had missed
seeing it over the past 10 years that I have researched the MUMMA
families of Butler county. The Mewma entry appears on a completely
different page in the listings and I missed it.
Also, from the cemetery information listed for Emma Mewma, it is not
clear to me if all of the names ("Florence Mewma", "John Mewma" and
"wife of John Mewma") are all carved on the stone or are bits of
information added to the recorded Cemetery listing.
Some background information:
1) John Mumma (Emma's husband) was born abt 1852 as the middle son of
Daniel Mumma and Caroline Wetzel. His father, Daniel Mumma, died in 1853
and is also buried in this plot, along with his daughter, Mary, who died
as an infant.

2) John also had a sister named Florence, born about 1850. I know that
Florence was alive in 1894 when she married Edward Thompson in
Middletown.
3) John married Emma L. Gunckel on 22 Nov 1876 in Montgomery County,
Ohio. Her father, William Gunckel, was a "cooper" in Germantown where
Emma was born and raised. After the marriage, Emma and John resided in
Butler County.
4) A son named "John Vernon Mumma" was born to John and Emma Gunckel
Mumma on 23 Sep 1877 in Madison Twp., Butler Co., OH.
5) John Mumma, the father, died on 10 Mar 1880 at age 28, in Madison
Twp., Butler Co., OH. His burial or his tombstone have not been listed
on any burial recordings, other than the listing of "wife of John Mumma"
on Emma's tombstone. I have not personally viewed this stone so I don't
know the exact wording that is carved on it.
6) Emma, the young widow, immediately moved back home to Germantown with
her young son and is enumerated in the same house as her parents in the
1880 census, recorded only 3 months after her husband's death.

7) Emma Gunckel Mumma died on 8 April 1881, about 1 year after her
husband. This death date is record in various Mumma family documents.
After Emma's death, John Vernon Mumma was raised by his grandparents,
married a girl in Montgomery County and started a raising a large
family. The family migrated to San Diego, CA where John died in 1940.
So, these are the facts. I know by comparing the birth and death dates
that Emma Mewma and Emma Gunckel Mumma are one in the same person. All I
can do is speculate about how the tombstone surname spelling got screwed
up. By 1880, there was no one living in Butler County with the MUMMA
surname. They had all died or had moved elsewhere, so it was no longer a
common and familiar surname.
My guess is Emma's father was not highly educated and may have had
difficulty spelling. MUMMA is not an easy name to spell if you only hear
it spoken. The normal pronunciation is "MOO MAW" or "MEW MAW". So, it is
likely that her father went to Middletown to have the tombstone made and
simply told the stonecutter the name and vital information for Emma
which he would have known. He probably didn't know John's birth or death
dates exactly. It is unclear about the other names listed. Is "Florence"
John's sister? Who is the "John" that is listed - is that John the
husband or reserved for John the son.
So, my questions are:
a) Do any original burial records or transcriptions still exist that
might provide information as to who ordered Emma's tombstone?
b) What are the exact inscriptions on Emma's Tombstone? How are they
placed on the stone? i.e. all on one face? 3 sides?
c) Anything in any old records that might suggest that John was buried
here first and then the larger stone was erected, replacing John's
stone, after Emma's death?
Thank you for your time and if Emma's name could also be entered in the
MUMMA spelling area of the index with a note saying "see Emma Mewma's
record". This might assist future researchers. If you know who might
have some information to contribute to this puzzle, please forward this
message to them.

The earliest physician of Middletown was Dr. Carlton WALDO. He came to that town shortly after the war of 1812, and remained there until the period of his death, which happened July, 31, 1831, then being fifty-one years of age. He was a native of New Hampshire. He was remarkable for calmness and serenity of mind, and died highly respected.
