Vacation of a Road in Union Township

Clermont County Genealogical Society

Vacation of a Road in Union Township
Submitted by Alma Aicholtz Smith, C.G.R.S.
Road records in the County Engineer's Office should not be overlooked
as sources of genealogical     information. Memorials and petitions for
vacation of roads contain signatures of early land-owners. Here is a
petition for a vacation of a road in Union Township that ran from the
junction of Salt Run Road (now Rumpke Road) with the Batavia Pike,
then south to the road from Round Bottom to Bethel (now part of
Aicholtz Road). Today the location of this road would be slightly east of
Eastgate Mall. Front Clermont County Road Records 1840-1855, page
To the Honorable Commissioners of Clermont County
We the undersigned petitioners citizens of Union Township beg leave to
represent that the road conunencing at the Batavia Turnpike opposite
Harmon Blanchard' s in said Township and running southerly till it
intersects a road leading from the Round Bottom in a direction toward the
Town of Bethel, is useless as a public highway and a burden to the  citizens
of the neighborhood, and ought to be discontinued, first, because   the
ground on which it is laid is such that it never can be made a road at   any
reasonable expense that can be travelled except on horseback --   secondly,
because it is the middle one of three roads all leaving the said   Turnpike
within about a mile and a half, and all running in the same   direction and
intersecting each other within a mile and a half of said   Turnpike. We
therefore pray that the same may be vacated.
