STONELICK HISTORICAL NOTES

from the Clermont Sun, Feb. 11, 1880

The first attempted settlement in Clermont was in Stonelick Township, in 1792, on the farm now owned by Mrs. Elizabeth Carpenter.

The only battle between the Whites and Indians that is not disputed was fought in 1793, in Stonelick Township, between the reds and a party of surveyors, one of the latter being wounded.

The first settler in the township was Dr. Richard Allison, in 1797, on the farm now owned by T. C. Teal.

Stonelick creek has had more saw and grist mills and distilleries built on its banks than any other stream in the county. The first one was put up by Henry Allison, in 1803.

Jesse Glancy owned the first harrow in the township; Levi Moore was the first blacksmith; John Hill, the first wheelwright; Samuel Penn, the first carpenter; John Charles, the first mill-right; Conrad Horsh made the first grain cradle; ____Edmunds was the first pedagogue, and taught at the present site of the Floral Hail on the Boston Fair Grounds, in 1805.

The first highway in the township was the Anderson State Road laid out in 1806.

Allisonia was laid out and platted in 1815; Boston in1836.

The oldest Baptist Church in Northern Clermont was organized in 1819, and the oldest Catholic Church was organized on Stonelick in 1837.

The township was the headquarters and rendezvous of numerous gangs of horse thieves and counterfeiters from 1807 to 1830. After the latter date the citizens made it so hot for the villains that they sought refuge elsewhere.
