Van Culin, Carl D. – Urbana Daily Citizen, Saturday, 29 September 2007

Carl D. Van Culin, age 99, of Piqua, and formerly of St. Paris passed away at 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at Piqua Manor Nursing Home, Piqua.

He was born on March 23, 1908 in St. Paris, the son of the late John D. and Emma (Baker) Van Culin. He married Margaret Tomlin on June 18, 1933 and she survives in Piqua.

Two sons and a daughter also survive: Bruce Van Culin of Piqua, Brian (Carol) Van Culin of Piqua, and Brenda (Richard) Sanders of New Carlisle.

He was a grandfather to 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, a brother Paul Van Culin, a daughter-in-law Madeline Van Culin, and a grandson Gerald Millikan preceded him.

Carl was a 1926 graduate of St. Paris High School, and a member of the St. Paris United Methodist Church. IN 1929 he took over his father’s business, Van Culin Insurance Agency of St. Paris, and he retired in 1991.

Carl was an active member in the community service in the St. Paris Lions Club. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and belonged to the former Pharos Lodge 355 of Saint Paris and the NMJ Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton. Carl loved to fish and was a former member of the Kiser Lake Sportsman Club.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 1, 2007 at 12 p.m. in the Atkins-Shively Funeral Home, 216 S. Springfield St., St. Paris, Ohio with Pastor Doug Upton of the St. Paris United Methodist Church presiding. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. There will also be two hours of visitation prior to the funeral service on Monday, October 1, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. Masonic services will be held at 11:45 a.m. in the funeral home.

 

 

VanCulin, Margaret E. Tomlin – Urbana Daily Citizen, & Piqua Daily Call, Saturday, 2 January 2010

Margaret E. VanCulin, 99, of Piqua and formerly of St. Paris, passed away at 8:35 a.m. Jan. 1, 2010 in Sterling House, Piqua.

She was born June 26, 1910 in St. Paris, the daughter of the late Charlie and Carrie (Rhinard) Tomlin.

She married Carl D. VanCulin on June 18, 1933, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 2007.

Together they raised three children, Bruce VanCulin of Piqua, Brian (Carol) VanCulin of Piqua and Brenda (Richard) Sanders of New Carlisle. Margaret also is survived by nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Gerald Millikan, a great grandson, Shane Brandon Millikan, a daughter-in-law, Madeline VanCulin and three sisters, Eythle Duer, Gladys Kite Miller, and Marcella Dern.

Margaret was a 1928 graduate of St. Paris High School. She was a member of the St. Paris United Methodist church, Diamond Chapter 84 OES, and she loved to camp, fish and do crafts.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. in the Atkins-Shively Funeral Home, 216 S. Springfield Street, St. Paris with the Rev. Dave Kepple of St. Paris United Methodist Church presiding. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, St. Paris.

Visitation for family and friends will be held before the funeral service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Association of Clark and Champaign County, P. O. Box 38125, Urbana, Ohio 43078. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

Vest, Avery E. – Urbana Daily Citizen, Monday, 9 July 2007

Avery E. Vest, age 64, of Conover passed away on Friday, July 6, 2007 at 8:25 p.m. in his residence. He was born on December 14, 1942 in West Liberty, Kentucky, the son of Willie P. and Olla (Harper) Vest.

His mother, Olla still survives in West Liberty, Kentucky. He married Imagene Cassidy on July 27, 1965 and she survives in Conover. He is also survived by three children: Rodney (Mary) Vest of Conover, Shyrl (Bill) Brown of Conover, and Michael (Nicole) Vest of Conover. 10 grandchildren: Leanne (Tom) Mills of DeGraff, Tiffany Vest of Quincy, Preston Vest, Ivan Vest, Anthony King, Molly King, Morganne Brown, Marissa Brown, Austin Vest, Alvia Vest, all of Conover and one great grandchild, Makayla Anne Mills of DeGraff. Many brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews also survive him. His father, Willie P. Vest, two brothers, Charlie and Bill Vest, and a daughter-in-law, Anne E. Vest, preceded Avery in death.

Avery attended Renewed Strength Church of Westville. He was a member of the Indian Lake Masonic Lodge #722. He served in the U. S. Army border patrol in Vietnam. In 1996 he retired from Daimler-Chrysler of Dayton.

Funeral services will held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Atkins-Shively Funeral Home, 216 S. Springfield St., St. Paris, Ohio. Reverend Carl Ogden of the Christiansburg Church of Christ in Christian Union will preside.

Burial will follow in Rosedale Cemetery, N. St. Rt. 235, Conover. The Veterans Elite Tribute Squad will conduct military honors. Visitation for family and friends will be from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2007.

The Indian Lake Masonic Lodge #722 will conduct private services for the family prior to visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Mercy Hospice, 1343 N. Fountain Blvd., Springfield, Ohio 45504. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.
