** If you use the dates implied by the tombstone Margaret would have been 31 and David 18 at their marriage on Feb 2, 1786, Augusta County Virginia.  Note that the granite tombstone reflects Margaret’s birth at 1765.  According to descendant Tracey Saucy in Oregon: “ I have been inclined to think that the birth date on her stone is incorrect.  And since it was made so many years after her death – it is possible to have made that kind of mistake – even by the stone-cutter, if not the son.  Some researcher’s have said that at the time of their marriage David was 18 and Margaret was 21 – which is a much more likely scenario”  Tracey also provided the 1928 images of the Gregory tombstones.  Thank-you.

Local history authors, Roger Miller, and George Crout have written articles about the local pioneer families and Gregory Station over the years.  Jim Sloan, wrote a much earlier article picturing, “Scout” Gilbert Urick Jr, Emma Drake,  “Scout” Eugene Miller, Mrs Alta Harvey Heiser, famed Butler County writer and historian, “Scout” Bob Kienzle, Jesa Bowman and Dr Lee Good.  Since the earliest preservation effort referenced in Mr. Sloan’s article, David Gregory’s tombstone is no longer at the burial site and a replacement granite marker has been put in place.  Transcription of several articles about the Gregory family can be found at the following links;  David H Gregory 1878,  Restore Headstones, Pioneer Family called Gregory, Gregory Station.

Below is a photo in 2004 of the late 1700’s Gregory log house/cabin, known as “Margaret Gregory’s.”  The building is located in the William F &Clara Dudley Woods Metropark in Liberty Township   The log house/ cabin has been moved to it’s current location near Gregory Creek on land that was once owned by the Gregory family.  David and Margaret had 6 children, the youngest being David Hiram Gregory born in 1801, whom later placed the marble tombstones in 1866.  The Gregory epitaphs are quoted and misquoted in a variety of articles but the Biographical and historical sketches: a narrative of Hamilton and its residents from 1792 Stephen Decatur Cone lists both epitaphs.
