A little about Greenwood Cemetery, Butler County, OH and the tombstones included on this Web-page

1st burial 10/1848

This site features “reburials”, those before 10/1848, and from surrounding cemeteries.  Stones that are broken or in bad shape are also noted with a *  There are stones from family groups included on occasion.

Oldest stones tend to be sandstone and sandstone markers have been targeted in hopes of providing more accurate information, than what is currently in the “Greenwood burial records” online.

Few death records exist prior to 1867 in Butler County, especially for women and children.  The tombstones can be the only physical evidence that an individual ever existed.

This information is just a tool, you have to decide if any of the tombstone/ tombstone information relates to your relative or research subject.

All photos are by Caroline Huppi beginning in 2009.  It is hoped that this information will be available for free for all family researchers.  Consider www.findagrave.com and other websites for other tombstone photos.

Please contact the Greenwood Cemetery office for information based on original records.

Tombstone Photography

What a difference a day makes.  Lighting is everything and I do the best I can on the day I am taking photographs.  Some tombstone photographs on this page have been selected because of the difficulty with the lighting and I may never catch the light right again.  The images online are scaled down for storage purposes from larger images and image detail is lost.

I do not do tombstone rubbings or chalking due to the potential to damage the tombstone.  Please contact the Greenwood Office should you want to do rubbings or chalking.  Tombstones are fragile and believe it or not- you can nock them over.  I do not touch any tombstone unless these are no other options.  The use of a soft brush on lichen is only done with great caution.
