Flushing
Former Flushing Youth Killed (Date unknown.)
Flushing --- Hollis Elmore Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald L. Smith of
Norfolk,
Va., formerly of Flushing, died in the DePaul Hospital April 30, according to
word
received here.
Hollis Elmore Smith, 16, of 118 Glendale Av., Norfolk, Va., died April
30th at 9:50 p.m. at DePaul Hospital as a result of a wound received in the
afternoon when a .22 calibre (sic) cartridge accidentally exploded in the
makeshift gun he was holding. The youth, a student at Granby high school, was
in the rear of his home in Glenwood Park when the accident happened at 5 p.m.
He was alone at the time and it seemed as though he was trying to load a
home-made weapon, made by strapping a short piece of pipe to the breech of a
12-gauge shotgun with friction tape. Within this pipe he had placed a small
steel cylinder into which was fitted a .22 calibre (sic) cartridge.
The handle of a pair of pliers was found jammed between the steel
cylinder and the inside of the pipe. Apparently he had forced it there to
steady the steel cylinder and the cartridge had exploded when it struck the
firing pin of the gun.
The bullet passed through the palm of his left hand and into his head
above the right eye. He was taken to Depaul Hospital in the police ambulance.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald L. Smith, he was in his sophomore year at
Grandy high school. He had been there for three and a half years, including
junior high school, and was active in the schools safety patrol and on the
track team as a pole vaulter. At the time of his death, he was on leave of
absence from the Norfolk Newspapers, Inc., where he had an afternoon job, in
order to take part in the sport.
Smith was born in Flushing and had lived in Norfolk eight years. Besides
his parents, he is survived by brother, Donald A. Smith, and maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Bethel, of Flushing. He was a member of the
Glenwood Park Presbyterian Church.

Death of John H. McWilliams
The deceased, John H. McWilliams, was born June 6th, 1824, and died May 5,
1890, after an illness of two weeks of paralysis of the brain, aged sixty-six
years. His parents were John and Mary McWilliams. He was born in Belmont
County, near Morristown, where he always lived, and raised a large family of
children. He was married the 14th day of May 1846, to Miss Sarah Berry, and
to them was born fourteen children, five of whom died when young. Nine are
now living, all of whom were at his bedside at the time of his death. All are
married, there being twenty-four grandchildren. Mr. McWilliams, having lived
in this community during all his life, formed quite an extended acquaintance,
all of whom will be greatly saddened by hearing of his death. Having been
permitted by the providence of his Maker to spend his allotted time in the
community, he did not spend it in vain. His highest object was to live a life
of ideal usefulness. Such being his aim, he knew whom to trust as assistant.
He identified himself with the U.P. Church, now United Presbyterian,
when young, in which he always took an active part, and raised his children to
remember their Creator and live a life of usefulness, to be strictly honest
and upright with mankind while on earth. He said then Oh, Lord, receive my
children, all in thy kingdom. On his deathbed he spoke of his dear wife and
children, and said he was going to leave them meetme in heaven one and all.
He was a man that took an active part in politics, was a great reader. He
could tell of things passed and gone years ago, and a good bible relator. He
was a kind and indulgent father. Oh we sadly miss thee, father, your smiling
face and cheering voice was always a comfort to us, when father is gone; there
is a broken home. The friends have the sympathy of the community in their
bereavement. To the widow we say you and the deceased have traveled lifes
journey a great number of years, but we hope the great Comforter, who afflicts
the hearts so surely will comfort and strengthen you in your sorrow and
bereavement, and that you may cling to him for comfort when the earthly house
of this tabernacle is dissolved. We have a building of God, a house not made
with
hands, eternal in the heavens. Funeral was conducted by Rev. Morton of
Morristown
M.E. Church.
A friend.
