James Cookson McIntosh

Golden Jubilee Tapanui Rifle Club

Our champion shot is V.W. Potts
of skill he has none but of luck he has lots.
He points at the target he shuts both eyes
on his excellent memory I'm sure he relies.

If a misguided missle should pass by your heals
you can bet it's misguided by Rifleman Eales
If you see him around with bat in his hands
then take to your scrapers for healthier lands.

Now Rifleman Duff is a shooter of sorts
but he's a fair tiger to mix up his sports.
Now shooting and fishing is all very fine
but we rather suspect he has other pastimes.

Now Coubrough from Ardmore is a fair shot I'd say
but some really good shooting is still on the way.
We'll send round the hat and we'll do what we can
with a pair of bifocals he'll be a new man.

Now we had a member who was heading for fame
but you'd have to be brave just to mention the name.
There's poor forend hedding and the barrels are duff
and of this bloody shooting I've had quite enough.

Now our club has a family and Bowman's the name
but Jim was the only one likely for fame.
He'd shoot the arse end off young Russell or Syd
and if anyone argues I've still got a quid.

Jack Izzard's a Rifleman keen as they should
his eye it is keen and his aim it is good.
But he does all his best shooting back in the stand
with a whopping great twenty ounce glass in his hand.

We've got a young joker who's showing some skill
Kirk is the name and first handle's Bill.
he's good at three hundred and six he's not bad
with a bit of good coaching he'll be a good lad.

Rumble's a shot that we all know quite well
he thinks he can shoot can he hell.
He's a bit highly strung when the going is tough
but we all think he's not strung half high enough.

Now Rifleman Mac is an expert we know
and just what an expert is now I will show.
And ex is a "has been" and in spite of all woe
a spurt is a drip under pressure I know.

Now we have a Rifleman Patrick McBride
his arm it is brawny his grin it is wide
He's keen on his shooting but I've heard it said
that he needs a bulls-eye thats as big as a shed.

Margaret McDonald our only girl shot
and a few times this year she has got all the lot
she's a jolly good sort and a jolly good sport
and our club could do easy with more of her sort.

Now there's Blacks and there's Whytes in this club have a name
there's Rodger's and Adam's with a clear turn to fame.
There's two brothers Miller there's Thomson's galore
give Willy his head and there'll be a few more.

At Easter our team went and took to the field
and with lots of good luck they came first in the shield
it took three hours to win it, two hours to pack,
and bloody near two days to bring it to Tap.

Now listen you chaps who would join with this club
you'd be far better off tied up in the pub.
If you find in the trust that their spirits are dear
then head up to Chilton's and get some free beer.

The above poem was written J.C.M. for the golden anniversary of the Tapanui Rifle Club 1962. (Can also be sung to Too ra loo etc.)
