1st May 2010 autumn photographic study of crosses at the little churchyard cemetery at St Anne's Church, Anglican parish of Geraldine by M.T. The two red leafed trees are very old and gnarled with lichen all over are purple prunus... deciduous. The tree behind the sign is some variety of Cyprus. Noticed mostly native trees when driving through the valley. Sketch. Another website.
Back of the wee church looking west with a huge ash tree. Anglican churches are always
orientated east/west, with the sanctuary at the east end. Two tall
Lombardy poplars are in the gap between the trees - the Te Moana river is
situated over there. A simple Latin cross, the type on which Christ is
believed to have been crucified, is found on the church's roof, and
throughout this peaceful churchyard cemetery. The cross is a
synonym
for Christianity.
The Burdon Plot with a cross and three angles. Angels are the agent of God,
often pointing towards heaven; guardians of the dead, symbolizing
spirituality.

Plaques for war graves for ex-servicemen both New Zealand and Allied are subsidised by the government; formerly Internal Affairs but now Veteran's Affairs (not the RSA). From 1983, spouses could also be buried in the servicepersons section. 183 New Zealand cemeteries have sections called "Services Cemeteries" e.g. Timaru, Waimate, Fairlie, Geraldine, Temuka. Archways agency ACGO and keyword "graves". The plaques are now bronze or granite. 2012. Planning, cost. Re ordering subsidised plaques from Veterans Affairs (full cost is only paid when the death is attributable to war service). Not all servicepersons were buried with an official plaque in services cemeteries. Some reasons were because of the standard plaque not allowing individual messages, and because until 1983 spouses could not be buried there also.

A little, lonely, green graveyard.
The old church tower its solemn guard,
The gate with naught but sunbeams barred.
While other sunbeams went and came,
Above the stone which waits the name,
His land must write with freedom's flame.
