To Our Readers. We have found it advisable to omit from our shipping column
the lists of packages arriving by the several coasting steamers. There is
evidently no advantage to the public in learning Hint so many cases, or
bales, or crates, arrived m a certain vessel, unless it is also stated what
was m them and to whom they were consigned. To give this fuller information,
however, would be to prejudice our advertising columns, and to affect a
liberality which is quite unusual, and is not culled for by the rules of
business. We have therefore determined to discard altogether the useless and
unintelligible lists of heterogeneous goods, which have hitherto cumbered
our shipping column. We shall endeavor always to give the fullest mercantile
and maritime intelligence, which is of public interest; while those
consignees who desire to have their importations specially noted, can do so
by paying for the insertion of the information as an advertisement.

Barque Rachel - This fine vessel arrived in port from England yesterday, and anchored at 1 p.m. She left Gravesend December 3rd, and the Downs on the 9th, making the passage in 105 days from Gravesend. We learn that during the voyage the cargo has been pillaged by the crew, and five of the sailors are in custody of the police. Evening Mail, March 27th.

The Confederate cruiser, Shenandoah, has within the past eight days been in the vicinity of the coast of Otago. Recently visited Melbourne. he American three-masted schooner Lubra sailed from the port on the same day. Off the West Coast the Hydra was boarded by a boat from the Shenandoah and the cruiser had her supplies supplemented by the transmission of twelve head of cattle from the stock on board the Hydra. The last American ship which left this port was the A.W. Stevens. She sailed for Newcastle on Monday, proceeding apparently by Cook's Strait. The Hydra arrived here on the 2nd with stock from Newcastle. Bruce Herald.

Our Shipping. That not a single vessel hails from or is owned by residents of here. All profit of carrying trade to this port goes into the pockets of people not connected with the district. Mr Wilson of Akaroa, has just launched a schooner called the "Breeze," built to the order of Mr W.C. Pearce, of Lyttelton, who also owns the "Vixen," - another vessel of Mr Wilson's building. The p.s. Geelong, from Dunedin and Oamaru arrived here on Thursday night about nine o'clock, and sailed again for Akaroa and Lyttelton last night about five o'clock. She had on board about 50 diggers en route to the West Coast.

Sept. 7. Geelong for Dunedin. Passengers - Messrs Lionel Harding and Edwards, Miss Rosa Cooper, and Mrs Parkinson. (Harding and Cooper entertainers) [Saturday September 23 1865 page 4.] On Wednesday last, Miss Rosa Cooper, Mr Lionel Harding and Mr R. Green, left Timaru early, in a trap drawn by two horses, for the purpose of attending Pleasant Valley Races, but after reaching the Waihi and leaving the main line of road they lost the track and came to the edge of a swamp. The horses became restive and unmanageable eventually upsetting the trap and throwing the occupants. Mr Green captured the horses and repaired the shaft with flax, and fastening together the harness, took two hours. The party started for Mr Young's Accommodation House at the Waihi, a distance of five or six miles.
Steam Communication. During the last week the p.s. Geelong, Captain Turnbull, visited Timaru for the last time, for a season. Certain repairs are necessary before a new certificate can be granted to the Geelong, and it is likely that she will be laid up for six or seven weeks. Two schooners are expected to be laid on for regular trading, one owned by a Dunedin firm, and the other belonging to Mr Ashcroft of Oamaru. During the last three months the Geelong has regularly landed at Timaru from thirty to forty tons of goods per week; and has had in addition, a good passenger traffic, and a little in the trade of exports.

Object to form a regular line of communication between Dunedin, Molyneux, Invercargill, and Riverton, on the South; Oamaru, Timaru, and Lyttelton on the North. It is proposed to have two first class steamers (screw) built, with a carrying capacity, one of 150 and the other of 250 tons, and comfortable accommodation for passengers. The smaller one is for the Southern trade and the larger one for the northern trade.; the former to be built in Sydney and running in four to five months. It is also proposed to take over the river steamer "Tuapeka" at a valuation, to run on the Molyneux in conjunction with the Southern steamer.

Captain Turnbull, of the "Geelong" took his departure by the s.s. Wellington, for Hokitikia, having accepted the appointment of Habour Master of that place, offered to him by the Canterbury Government. Captain Turnbull has been in charge of the Geelong for two years. The Geelong is now under command of Mr Hart, formerly chief officer of that vessel.

The SSNC have given two orders for two new steamers to be built at Glasgow on the twin screw principle, of about 3000 tons, and to be named the "Pareora"; and the other to be built at Sydney to be named the "Matan".

The directors of the Southern Steam Navigation Company have purchased the well-known favourite paddle steamer Geelong from Mr John Jones, the purchase money being, we believe 5000, including the cost of repairs and thorough over-haul in Dunedin. The Geelong will continue to be employed in the Otago and Canterbury trade, calling in at various Northern Ports; and she will make regular trips to Port Molyneux, and such other ports to the Southward. On we hurry through a splendid farming district. Past Winchester, with its neat villas and trim gardens; past Temuka, with its white-spired church and Gothic schools, its well-stocked farms and plethoric corn-yards; past Arowhenua, with its Maori village, and another mountain stream brawling over its bed of shingle. On, with accelerated speed, through magnificently cultivated farms, rich swaths of stubble, and ample evidences on every hand of rural wealth and thriving settlement. I have rounded sheep over every miles of this country in the olden time, when there was little else but flax, raupo, tussock, wild pig and unbroken ground. Men are surely better than wild pigs, and smiling farms than lonely shepherds' huts. The train rolls into Timaru, and we get housed in the comfortable Grosvenor Hotel. Twenty years ago I last visited Timaru, I sailed up from Lyttelton, in a small coasting tub of a steamer. there was a terrific ground swell off the open beach of shingle, and the breakers rolled their curling crests landwards with a roar and crash like thunder. All landing, both cargo and passengers, was done by the huge unwieldy surf-boats. And it was a very rare experience, indeed, to get ashore with a dry skin.
The village boasted then of only a few shops, one or two ware houses along the beach, and less than half a dozen inferior hotels. The Timaru Herald of that date was published in a small weathered hut, quite detached, and perched on a waster hillock overlooking the ocean. The very hill itself has now disappeared, to make room for the railway. Bullocks teams might be stuck up in the main streets and towns people came to the assistance of the teamster to dig them out. All the houses were of wood, and were set down very much at random. When the annual races were held, the young bloods and station hands "from all the region round about", the boys from the Mackenzie country, the sawyers from the Waimate, the half-breeds and 'cockatoos" from Temuka and the Arowhenua Bush, and all the "flotsam and jetsam: from every accommodation-house within a radius of fifty miles used to come into town, and for a lively week or two high saturnalia used ro be held. At that time Timaru had the reputation of being the fastest, most rackety, riotous township in the South Island.Dec. 2 1865 page 4

The Southern Steam Navigation Company's steamer, Geelong, Captain Hart, arrived from Lyttelton, at 3 p.m., on Wednesday and left again for Dunedin at 8 p.m. with 120 bales of wool.
The Mermaid, Captain Rose, arrived in Lyttelton on Monday evening. She has made a very fair passage of 92 days from Gravesend. The passengers are all in good health, and the ship brought up at the Three-mile Point. We notice amongst the passengers, the return of an old friend - Captain Cain.Chinese in Otago - Dunedin is honoured with the visit of a Chinese, Mr Ah Mei. He has come down to make inquiries on behalf of influential countrymen in Melbourne. Some half-dozen more Chinese, are on their way here, and will assist Ah Mei in the inspecting the goldfields. Their desire is to select a locality where they are little likely to come into collision or interfere with the Europeans.

On Tuesday last the body of a man was found in Parker's Creek, Waitaki. The water was very shallow. He worked as a shearer for a short time on Mr Parker's station. He was apparently suffering from the effects of drink.

Arrival of the Himalaya, Captain Cow, at Lyttelton on Saturday at noon. She left the East India docks on Nov. 1, 1865..... Account of voyage. There have been two deaths on the passage: on Dec. 10, the child of Mrs Keiltie died and on the same day the mother died from peritonitis. She has also on deck 101 prize sheep for the Romney Marsh breed, 22 having died on the voyage. A fine Durham cow has also arrived out in good health, together with a number of small birds, consisting of canaries, larks, &c.
Feb. 2. A large iron ship was seen in the roadstead about five or six miles from shore. The same vessel was signalled in the morning about 38 miles south-east of bank' Peninsula, when she showed the 1st distinguishing pennant, 5236. She is supposed to be the Himalaya from London to Lyttelton, and is about 92 days out.North Otago Times, 8 February 1866, Page 2

The ship Victory arrived at the entrance of Lyttelton harbor on Saturday evening and anchored off Camp Bay, passengers and immigrants well. The Victory left England on the 16th December and experienced a very pleasant passage throughout. The Mermaid left the fairway of Lyttelton harbor at 10.30 on Sunday morning, with a fair wind for old England.

A number of immigrants from the ship Lady Jocelyn at Lyttelton will

VESSELS IN ROADSTEAD. Eliza McPhee, ketch. Kestrel, ketch. As an instance of the
amount of work which can be done m the Timaru roadstead iv a short time, we may
mention that on Monday the Government Landing Service shipped to two steamers
600 bales of wool, and landed 74 immigrants and luggage, also about 50 tons
general cargo. Both steamers, the Bruce and Beautiful Star, were ready for sea
at 7 p.m. The ship Waimate, 1,132 tons, Rose, from London, with 363 Government
immigrants, arrived at Lyttelton on Monday last. She left Gravesend on October
28, thus completing a pleasant passage in a few hours over eighty-six days. The
immigrants are described as very respectable. The majority of the men are
agricultural laborers, and the remainder are principally mechanics. The girls,
with the exception of a few who are shopwomen, are domestic servants. Eight
deaths occurred during the passage, seven were infants, and one an adult. The
adult was George Green, aged 15, a seaman, who fell overboard and was drowned. A
number of immigrants from the ship will arrived at Timaru to day by the Bruce.

LOCHNAGAR.
The Shaw-Savill and Albion Company's fine barque Lochnagar hove in
sight in the outer roads early yesterday morning, after a passage of 105 days
from London. The tug Titan steamed out soon afterwards, and after making fast,
towed her inside the breakwater, when she was made fast to the buoys. She comes
into port m splendid trim, and reflects the greatest credit on Captain Perriam
and his officers. Captain Perriam reports leaving the East India Docks on
Saturday, July 18th, in charge of a pilot, and in tow of the tug Canada.
She was towed down the river to the Nore, where she tug cast off, and she then
proceeded to the North Foreland and anchored. Beat down to the Downs the next
day, where the pilot left her rounded the South Foreland the next night wag off
Folkestone at 4 next morning- passed. Start Point on Thursday the 23rd with an
easterly wind passed 25 miles west of Madeira on the 4th August, bet did not
sight it. Crossed the Equator on 23th August with fine weather and winds, and
then picked up the S.E. trades....The Lochnager's officers are Captain S.
Perriam, Mr George Wood first officer, and Mr Richard Beale second officer. She
has on board about 300 tons of machinery for the Timaru Woollen Factory,
including a l3 ton boiler, a quantity of general merchandise, and a part cargo
for Gisborne, which port she sails for when she has discharged the Timaru
portion of her cargo.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board was held to-day. The
harbormaster, Captain Webster, reported the arrival of 29 vessels, of the
aggregate register tonnage of 8396 tons, and the departure of 31 vessels, of the
aggregate tonnage of 8772 tons, during the mouth of October 1885. During the
month the weather has been favourable for shipping. The whole of the vessels
worked at the wharf, and received good despatch. The barque Lochnagar,
from London direct, discharged a six-ton boiler, with the aid of the crane "Samson,"
across the wharf. He suggests to board, in view of the further extension of the
breakwater, the advisability of placing a few piles in the most conspicuous
place against the concrete, to allow vessels to come directly under the jib of
the large crane to lift out a weight up to 40 tons and place it on the railroad.
The Priestman dredge has been employed when opportunity offered in
increasing the depth at the outer end of the wharf.

Arrived - Nov. 17 Ganymede, barque. 556 tons, Morgan, from London, via
the Bluff. Passenger Mrs Morgan. Mr Alex. White's iron barque Ganymede
arrived from London, via the Bluff, at 2 p.m. yesterday. Captain Morgan reports;
Left London docks on July 4th on July 13th took her departure from the Lizard
picked up the N.E. trades on July 24th, which carried her to 14 north thence had
light variable winds, calms and heavy confused seas, which continued until
August 18th, when the Equator was crossed m longitude 18 east. on Sept. 21st
crossed the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope. On Sunday, October 4th, at
daylight, sighted several large icebergs on the starboard bow, the highest being
about 200 feet high, with several more around it, the latitude being 46.50 south
and longitude, 57 54 east. The first officer is Mr Chas. Bishop and the second,
Mr Bennett. Mrs Morgan is a passenger by the Ganymede. The vessel comes into
port in her usual trim condition, though her sides show evidence of having been
well washed by the waves. After discharging about 400 tons of cargo she will
load for Home.

Timaru, this day. The tug has returned from the barque Hudson. The
Harbour-master says that she is lying head-on to the beach near the mouth of
Milford Lagoon (some 12 miles north of Timaru, she was bound for Lyttelton so 40
miles off course). She went ashore at 3 o'clock on Thursday morning.� The
captain declines to state how, remarking that he will have to answer enough by
and-bye. The ship is owned by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company. She is on a
sandy beach, and is not in any way injured. The cargo is all right. The crew got
ashore without difficulty, as the sea was very calm. It is probable that the
barque will get off should the weather keep fine. Arrangements are likely to be
made to get a tug from Lyttelton and the Harbour Board's tug to tow her off.
Capt. Edwin J. Thomas gives the following particulars of the mishap to the
vessel: after a very fine passage of 95 days from London, the Hudson made the
Snares on Saturday last. On Wednesday evening she made Timaru town light, but
could not see the light from the lighthouse, At 10 p.m. she stood out to sea,
and about midnight tacked towards the shore. After a while she was again headed
seaward. The wind then fell calm, and a dense fog set in. Soundings were taken,
and every effort was taken to keep her off the land, but the swell and current
gradually forced her nearer the Ninety-mile Beach, which she struck about 3
o'clock in the morning. About noon Mrs Thomas, wife of the master, was landed,
and shortly after 2p,m. the crew began to jettison the cargo throwing overboard
a quantity of gunpowder, cases of spirits, etc the greater part of which was
soon picked up and stacked on the beach. The Rocket Brigade in the meantime ran
a line ashore and to the other side of the lagoon, to assist in getting the
cargo on shore and steady the vessel. The captain of the Hudson intended to send
all his crew ashore for the night. Her cargo consists of about 1,1500 tons of
general merchandise, and a quantity of plant for the Timaru Woollen Factory
Company (Limited). As to the actual cause of the Hudson coming to grief, the
captain put it down to the heavy current and dense fog, the set of the former of
which is not properly understood.

We understand Captain Edwin J. Thomas has an interest in the vessel, and has
sailed her for six years. The Hudson is an iron barque of 737 tons
register, Aa1 at Lloyd. Her length is 194ft, beam 30ft, and depth of hold 19ft.
She was built at Stockton by Messrs M. Pearse and Co. in 1869. She belongs to
the Shaw, Saville and Albion Company's fleet, and left London on August 15th,
consigned to Mr John Inglis. She is commanded by Captain Edwin J. Thomas. There
is also a locomotive onboard consigned to the Government. Herbert Collins,
second mate of the barque Hudson.
Captain Perriam seems to have greatly enjoyed his first visit to South Canterbury.

Capt. Gerhard Crone, late of the s s. Wainui, is about to take
command of the barque Susan Jane, belonging to Messrs LeCren,
Turnbull and others, of Timaru. The vessel is presently on a voyage to Newcastle
for coals, and is expected in a week or two, when Captain Clone assumes command.
His first trip will probably be to Mauritius.

Timaru July 23. Arrived Cingalese, barque, Captain Raddon, 104
days from London. About .five weeks ago a very heavy sea broke over her poop,
throwing down the captain (who was at the wheel) and flooding the decks, nearly
washing another man overboard. Captain Raddon's ankle was seriously injured, but
was put in splints. On coming ashore it was found that the small bones were
broken but they have been well set.
