1st January 1874 — 28th December
1st Janry 1874, Thursday.... At home.
3d, Saturday.... I went to Mr Tripp’s. Called upon Peake, Kirby. Mr Tripp’s
family very ill. Spoke to Slipper & Flatman about the Sunday School treat.
4th, Saturday.... I held service in the Church Geraldine present about 60
people. 17 attended the Holy Communion. At 3—30 I held service et the Waihi
Crossing; present about 30 people. At 6—30 pm. I held service at Temuka present
about 70 people.
5th, Monday.... I called upon Rayner, Lee, Franks, Dr Rayner who was very ill;
also Holloway, Benbow, Wills, Palmer, Chapman.
6th, Tuesday.... At home.
7 Wednesday.... I rode to the Temuka & Waitui Flat. Called upon Rayner, Vincent,
Walker, Parr. Went nearly to the Point. Returned home the same night.
8th, Thursday.... I went to Mr A. McDonald’s, Gould’s & Pearson’s.
11th, Sunday.... I held service in Geraldine Church; present about 50 people.
Such a severe thunderstorm I did not go either to Temuka or Kelland’s. Called
upon Mr Tancred to arrange the School Feast etc.
13 Tuesday.... I went up to Peel Forest.
14th Wednesday.... I went to Waihi Bush and called upon Flatman, Slipper, Farie,
Hardcastle, Capn Clogstoun. Staid the night at Captain Clogstoun’s.
15th Thursday.... I went to Mr Slack’s. Called upon Gapes, Boucher, Speechley.
16th Friday... .I rode up to Mr Tripp’s to arrange for the Waihi Bush children
getting down to Geraldine for the School Feast on Tuesday. Mr Tripp agreed to
bring them all down in his cart.
17th Saturday.... I went to call upon Mr W. McDonald and Mr Barker, Wadsworth.
18th Sunday.... I held service at Geraldine 11a.m. Present about 65 people At 3
pm I held service in the Valley Church; present about 8 people. Administered the
Holy Communion to 4 people. I called to see a man who was much injured (at
Hunt’s house), he being bruised by a dray full of bricks nearly running over
him. In the evening 6—30 1 held a service in the Church Temuka about 70 people
19th Monday I called upon a few people in Temuka, Smith Gabey, Palmer,
McIntosh, the man at Hunt’s who got injured with the brick dray.

20th.... All day at School Feast in Mr Tancred’s paddock. About 150 children
present end all the ladies & gentlemen of the district. Lady Tancred gave the
prizes to the Sunday School children of Waihi Bush Sunday school.
21st.... I attended the Breaking up of Government School at Waihi Crossing and
distributed the prizes to the children.
22nd Thursday.... I went to the Burkes Pass country. Called in at Brittin’s.
Staid the night at Alberry station; Mr McFurian was at home. I held service at
night
On the 23rd, Friday I went to Mr Spencer’s station. Held service there in the
evening; present about 10 people.
On Saturday 24th I went up the McKenzie Pass to Burkes Pass. Called in at
Rollseby station (Mr Smith); also in at the township Burkes Pass, upon Freme,
Stansell, Winter, Burgess. Then I rode down the Pass to Mr Kimbell’s. Staid with
him for the night.
25 Sunday.... I rode up to the Church Burkes Pass & add service at 2—30 p.m.
About 25 people present. Administered the Holy Communion to 4 people. After the
service I rode over the Pass a distance of 15 miles, to the Tekapo Ferry. Called
at Coxes station — no one at house. Went to the Ferry; crossed over. Found Grant
the shepherd at the Inn. After speaking to him & the Innkeeper, I determined to
hold a service in the Inn as the ferry man told me that all the men about would
come in to hear what I had to say. I read them a chapter in the Bible, then the
Litany, then another chapter, then a short sermon, which I found as much as they
could well digest. Some of them had had a glass or two but were very orderly &
quiet. After the service I crossed the river again to the station & staid all
night.
26th Monday.... I baptized Grant’s baby, then rode across the Ferry to a station
called Castle Hall belonging to Mr Cox. Found Mr Gammock at home. Had some
dinner with him, & then I went about 25 miles further to Simons Pass. Found Mr
Brown at home. Called on my way at Mr Saunder’s station, the Wolds. Being very
hot & tired, I got a wash & had some milk & biscuits. I got to Mr Brown’s about
? 0—clock p.m. I held service at the station in the evening. As they were
shearing I had a pretty good congregation.
27 Tuesday.... Mr Brown kindly went with me over the Tekapo river to show me the
ford. I called in at Tyndal’s. Had some tee, then rode to Burkes Pass township.
Called in at Stansell’s, then rode on to Mr Kimbell’s.
28th Wednesday.... I returned home calling in at Hamilton’s, Mr Wigley’s
station, R. Bell, the Kakahu. I reached Geraldine in the evening having been
away 7 days & ridden about 180 miles.
Thursday.... At home.
30th Friday.... I called upon Mrs Pierce, Ford, Williams who got such a severe
injury by being crushed with s brick dray that

his life was despaired of. Found him getting better. I called also upon Mrs
Mason who had just been confined.
Sunday the 1st of Febry.... I went to the Church Geraldine. No one was there it
being rain. In the afternoon 3—30, I held service at the Waihi Crossing; present
about 30 people. At 6—30 p.m. I held service in Temuka; present about 104
people.
2nd Monday.... I was at home.
3d Tuesday.... I went to Temuka. Called on my way at Gabey’s, Barker’s,
Gladstone’s, C. Gosling, W. Gosling senior, Bill, Brown, Craig, Ensor, Pilbrow,
Rutland.
4th Wednesday.... I returned home. Called upon Mr — (?), Miss Lowthorpe, Grip
(?), Allen, Fovel, Rayner, Mrs Rayner school house, Miss Ferne (?).
5th Thursday.... At hose. Called upon Dr Fish.
6th Friday.... I called upon McKenzie, Mitchell, Williams, Furgiaon, Deane,
Whittaker.
8th Sunday.... I held service in St Mary’s Geraldine; present about 40 people.
At half past three I baptized Kelland’s baby, also as child of Kelland's nearly
2 years old. At 3-30 I baptized Mr Wills’ baby. At 5 p.m. I read the funeral
service over McIntyre, a young son who was unfortunately drowned while bathing.
At 6—30 p.m. I held service in St Saviour’s Church Temuka; present about 120
people.

11th Wednesday.... I went to Temuka. Called upon Rayner, Dr Rayner, Lee, Meyers,
Mrs McAllum, Bryant, Tavander.

Evens, Kelland, Speechley, Mr Walker, Sharp.
15th Sunday.... I held service in St Marys Church Geraldine; present about 40
people. At 3—30 I held service in the Valley Church; present about 10 people. At
6—30 I held service in St Saviours Temuka; present about 120 people. In the
evening after church I rode with Talbot over to his home to baptize his baby who
was very ill. Baptized it.
16th Monday... I rode up the flat to call upon McIntyre who lost his brother in
the Opihi river. Called upon Langridge, also Meyer, Hullen, Olliver, Ackroyd,
Popplwell, Rayner the schoolmaster, Rodgers, Thompson. Baptized Thompson’s baby
who was very ill, dysentery.
18th Wednesday .... I went to Temuka by the Kakahu. Called upon Well., Tomey,
Benbow, Rayner the schoolmaster Temuka, Stubbs, Mason, Fergison, C. Gosling.

March 1st, Sunday.... I held a service, Holy Communion & a baptism, in St Mary’s
Geraldine. Present about 70 people At 3—30 I held service at the Waihi Crossing;
present about 30 people. At 6—30 I held service in St Saviours Temuka; present
about 110 people
2nd March.... I called upon Vincent, Seals, Walker, Rayner, Stubbs.
3d March Tuesday.... Mr Slack came. A funeral (Sherratt).
4th Wednesday.... I called upon Mrs A. McDonald, Captn McPherson, Mills. Mr
Wills from the Ashburton held service in the evening at 6—30. Present about 15
people.

who had an illegitimate child and lived with Mrs Austin. After talking to her I
baptized her baby. Baptized also two of Mrs Austin’s children, one 3 years old.

28th Saturday.... I started up to Mount Peel. Crossed the Rangitata Bridge.
Baptized Salt’s baby. Staid all night at Mrs Moorhouse’s.
29th Sunday.... Rain. Mrs Moorhouse & family could not cross the river to Mount
Peel Church. I held service in her house. After service I sent to Scotstown
present about 20 people. At 6—30 I held service at the Waihi Bush; present about
40 people

p.m. Baptized Francis Willoughby Tancred — stood godfather
for him.
Apl 6th, Easter Monday.... A Harvest Festival & Sunday school
treat and held in Mr Tancred’s paddock. Evening, occupied
the chair at a meeting & lecture in aid of the British &
Foreign Bible Society.
Apl 7th.... Held the annual Easter meeting at Geraldine.
Apl 9th.... Held our annual Easter seating at Temuka.
11th Saturday.... A general Church meeting of the whole of the
Geraldine district was held at the Waihi Crossing, at which
it was determined to build a Parsonage at Geraldine.
12th Sunday.... A Harvest Thanksgiving service was held at Geraldine, also a service
Waihi Crossing, and the usual service

17th.... I started for the McKenzie Country. Staid all night at
Alberry (Albury). Held service.
18th..... I got to Mr Kimbell’s.
19th.... I held service in the Church Burkes Pass.
20th.... I went to Rain’s (Raine) station, Sherwood Downs. Held service & baptized a
child.
21st.... I went to Raincliff station. Held service & baptized a child.
22nd.... I called at Mr Wigley’s station & the other houses in
the neighbourhood. Mr Slack’s.

Sunday 26th of April.... I went to the Point. Held service at
Temuka in the morning & the Point 3—30 p.m.
Saturday 2d of May.... I went to see Mrs Bill. Found her very
ill of typhoid fever, also her little girl. Called also upon Budd. Found his
child also very ill.
Sunday 3d of May.... I held service at Geraldine in the morning 11 a.m., Holy
Communion. Present only abt 6 people. At the Waihi Crossing at 3—30, Holy
Communion; present about 6
communicants. Went to see Mrs Bill. Found her almost insensible, wandering at times in her mind. Before I left, administered the Holy Communion to her. At 6-30 p.m. I held
service in the Church Temuka; present about 100 people. Returned home the same night very
tired.

getting better. Also upon McKenzie, Chapman, Rutland, Stubbs, Rayner.
18th Thursday.... I called upon Mr Slack, Speechley.
21st Sunday.... 1 held service at Geraldine... At 3 0—clock I held service in
the Valley........... At 6—30 1 held service in Temuka; present about 120

22nd Monday.... The Parsonage Committee Meeting held their second meeting in
Geraldine & determined to advertise for fresh plans.
23rd.... I called upon Mrs Tancred, Burridge, Furgison.

confirmation candidates. Called upon Opie.
29th Monday...I called upon Mr Acton, J. Pilbrow, Pierce. Baptized Pierce's
baby. Called upon Moore at Talbot's, Meyers, Fox. Baptized 2 of Fox 's children.
30th Tuesday I called upon Meyer, Rayner, Benbow, Wills, McAllum, Klee, Waihi

1st July Wednesday.... At home.
5th Sunday. I held service at Geraldine 11 a.m., at Waihi Crossing 3—30, at
Temuka 6—30....10 communicants at Geraldine.
6th Monday..I staid in Ternuka. Called at Emigrant barracks,also on 3 families
living near Whitehead's; also on Mr McBratney, Radford, Chapman, Stubbs,
Bryant, Lee, Massey, Rayner school, Dr Rayner.
Tuesday. At home. Called at Mr Tancreds.
8 Wednesday.... At home. Called upon ( blank )
9 Thursday. I started to Burkes Pass. Called upon Mrs Speechley, Bradley, Bell,
Kelland, Mr Wigley's shepherd. Staid the night at Raincliff.
10th Friday. I started to go to Mr Rain's [Raine] station up the Opua [Opuha].
Had a good look for the pocket communion service I lost. Got up to the wire
fence but could not find my communion service. As the river was rising very fast
& the ford narrow & rockey. I did not like to cross to get to Mr Rain's. I
might have got over the wire fence but thought that it would be best to go back
& have another look for the communion service. Could not find it. Went back as
far as Rob's hutt. Staid all night with him. Got wet with nor-west rain, it
having blown fearfully from the N.W. most of the day and rained heavily every
now & then. Was very glad to reach Rob's hutt without any accident. Once on the
hills my horse fell down with me, it being very slippery, and the wind & rain so
frightened my horse that I found it very difficult to get him quietly along. I
only lost my martingale which the horse broke in his fright. Robb was very civil
to me & made me very comfortable.
11th Saturday I started to go to Burke's Pass. It was a dreadfully wet day. Robb
kindly showed me the road through the Raincliff run. It was snowing going over
the hills. About 2 a—clock I got to Mr Grey's station, awfully wet. My valice
was wet through & all the things inside well soaked. Staid all night with Mr
Grey.
Got my things dried.
12th Sunday.... I went to the Church in the Pass and held service.

Present about 20 people. I called upon Burgess, Winter, Spalding, Freme.
Staid all night with Mr Smith at Rollesby. All covered with snow about the Pass.
13th Monday.... I went down the McKenzie Pass to Mr Rutherford's. Staid with Mr
J. Rutherford all night. Called upon Mr Spencer, also Mr R. Rutherford.
Mrs Tait and Mrs H. Brown were staying at Mr R. Rutherford's. I held service in
the evening; present about 18 people....
14th Tuesday...I baptized Mr J. Rutherford's baby. As it was snow & rain I did
not start away until about 11 o-clock. At McLeod's I baptized a child of a man
called London. On my way home I called at the Cave station. Mr Gordon was at
home. Went down the river to Mr Howell's; staid with him all night.
15th Wednesday.... I called on my way home on Mr Opie, Wain, Worthington, Orton,
Rayner, Klee. Came home by Temuka.
16th Thursday At home.
18th Saturday.... A marriage in Geraldine Church (Jones' )
19th Sunday.... I held service at 11 a.m. at Geraldine; present about 30 people
At 3 1 ought to have held service in the Valley but was obliged to go to Temuka
for a funeral at 4-clock. I held service in the evening at 6—30; present about
120 people.Returned home.

26th Sunday....I held service at Temuka 11 a.m. At Temuka there were about 120
people present, and about staid to the sacrament. Åt the Point there were about
50 people present.
27 Monday.... I called upon Jackson, Halstead, Smith, Opie, M. Saunders. I
expect Saunders will be confirmed, also Halstead & Smith's daughter. I called
also upon Hullen to speak to his daughter on confirmation. Called on my way home
on Sharp & Mr Walker.

29th Wednesday.... I called upon Mr Tancred, Burt, the Pound
Emigrants, also Mills & Deane.

9th Sunday, The Bishop held service in the Church Geraldine. Present a very
large congregation. 5 candidates for confirmation. At 5 p.m. the Bishop held
service at Temuka. The church was crowded. 14 candidates for confirmation were

Wednesday 12th.... At Geraldine. I celebrated the marriage service between James
Guilford & Kate Lynch. The Bishop staid the night with us.
Thursday 13th.... Bishop went in the coach to Timaru. I called upon Mrs Slack.
16th Sunday.. I held service at Geraldine.... .. Present about 40. At 3 held
service in the Valley; present about 12 people. At 6—30 1 held service in
Temuka; present about 120.
17th Monday. ...I called upon Bryant, Franks, Rayner, Tavender, Annie Noonan
about Holy Comm.. , Mrs Foster about Holy Communion, Dr Cuming, Mr Whitehead,
Wyatt, Way, Griffin, Butler, Klee, Young at Waihi Crossing.
18th Tuesday At home.
19th Wednesday.... Visited people in Geraldine. Found Mr Smith no better. Went
to Waihi Bush. Married S. Hammond & E. Dean.
20th Thursday.... I went to Waihi Crossing to see confirmation candidates.
Married Coull to Croxford.

22d Saturday. I went to the Waihi Bush.
23d Sunday I held service in the Church Temuka; present about 80
people, 16 communicants.
At 3—30 I held service at Holy Communion, present 9 communicants; present about
40 people;
I baptized 4 children, 2 at Temuka, 2 at the Point.
24th Monday.... I called upon Jackson, Halstead, Opie, Cook, Acton, Worthington,
Leicken, Orton, Vincent, Walker, Rogers, Stubbs, Klee, Taylor. I baptized
two children.
Called upon Langridge.
Tuesday, Wednesday (Thursday, marriage) Called at houses.
Friday 28th I went to a British & Foreign Bible meeting in Temuka. Present about
8 members.
29th Saturday, I went to Mount Peel. Mr Acland from home. Called upon Sowerby,
Griffin, Heney, Wooding, Clough, McLeod. I staid all night at Mount Peel.
Called upon Sir T. Tancred.
30th Sunday. I held service in the Church Mount Peel. I held service at
Scotsburn; present about 40 people. Called at Mr Tripp's. At 7 0-clock I held
service at the Waihi Bush; present about 50 people.
31st Monday At home. Marriage.
3d (September) I went to Mr Tripp's to a party. Present all the
people of the neighbourhood.
4th Friday.... Left Mrs Preston at Mrs Tripp's and came home. Called to see Capn
McPherson who was dangerously ill. Also went to an entertainment at the Waihi
Crossing given on behalf of a cricket club, to buy a piece of land etc.
Saturday A marriage, S. Ford. A Parsonage Building Committee was held in my
house.
Present Dr Fish, Mr Cooper, Gosling, Wood, Stubbs, Flatman. It was decided
to consult with an architect and get a suitable plan drawn out.
Sep 6th, Sunday 1 held service at Geraldine; present about 50 people. Holy
Communion, present 14 communicants. At 3—30 I held service at the Waihi
Crossing; present about 20 people. At 6—30 I held service at Temuka; present
about 130 people

16th Wednesday. I called on Captain McPherson; found him just alive. Also on Mr
W. McDonald, Mr Burt, Dr Fish.
20th Sunday I held no service in any Church owing to rain.
27th Sunday I held service in the Church at Temuka; present about 40 people.
About 14present at the Holy Communion. In the afternoon I went to the Point, but
owing to rain there was no service. Called at Orton's, Halstead's, Opie.
28th Monday 1 called to see Mr (?) Forward who is very ill. Also Klee, Stubbs.
Octr 1st I went to see Parkee's little boy. Also I called upon
Bill, Chapman, Forward, E. Rayner.
October 2nd 1874.... Not atall well.
4th Octr Sunday I held service in St Marys Church Geraldine 14 communicants. At
3—30 I held service at the Waihi Crossing; present about 30 people. At 6-30 I
held service at St Saviours Church Temuka; present about 130 people
Octr 11th I held service at Geraldine & Temuka.
Octr 18th.... I held service in the Church at Geraldine, also the Valley &
Temuka 6—30 evening.
From the 19th to the 3d of Novr I was in Chch at the Synod.
1st Novbr 1874
I held service at Opawa 11 a.m., at New Brighton 3 p.m., — at Avonside
6-30 p.m.
Novr 6th.... I went to Burkes Pass. Staid the first night at Rain' s. I held a
service in the evening.
On the 7th I called at Clayton. In the afternoon rode with Miss McPherson & Miss
Stratchen(?) & Grey to Mr Kimbell's.
On the 8th I held service in the Church Burkes Pass. At night I rode over the
Pass to Tindall's.
Staid the night with him & had a short service.
On the 9th I went to Haldon, 3.5 miles from Burkes Pass. I held a service in the
evening.
Called at Grey's Hills station. I found Mr Dennistoun at home.
On the 10th I called again at Greys Hill station, at Fisher's & then I went
through the McKenzie Pass to Mr McFarlan's, Richardson. I had a service in his
house in the evening.
11th of Novr Wednesday.. I went to Mr R. Rutherford 's. Called upon J.
Rutherford & Mr Spenser.
12th I returned home .
15th I held service in St Marys Church Geraldine 11 am... At 3.30 I held service
in the Valley Church... A 6-30 I held service at St Saviours Church Temuka
present about 120.Returned home in the evening.

[Waitohi Flat] Flat. At 6—30 I held service in the Church at Temuka... in aid of
Sunday school.
Decr 20th 1874, Sunday. I held service in St Marys Church Geraldine. The
offertory was in aid of the Sunday school. At 3 o'clock I held service in
Pleasant Valley. At 6—30 I held service in Temuka. My text was the same as at
the Church Pleasant Valley.
21st Monday I went to call upon Wills, Benbow, Talbot, Wright, Braddick. Samuel
Braddick was very ill.
25th Xmas Day.... I held service in St Marys Church (the Church was decorated)
About 5 people attended the Holy Communion. The young man Braddick died of fever
on Xmas Day.
27 Sunday.... I held service in St Saviours Church Temuka at 11 a.m.; present
about 80 people. I administered the Holy Communion to 19 communicants. Baptized
Dorbey's child after
service. At 3 I held service at the Point; present about 50 people. I preached a
funeral sermon.
The funeral service I performed at 5 o'clock (Saml Braddick's funeral)
26th Monday.... I visited 7 people & performed the marriage service for J. R.
Upton in Geraldine. At 6—30 or 7 0-clock I read the funeral service over
Dobbie's little twin
girl, the last one left.
