Open day offers help in family history research

HUTT NEWS | Tuesday, 18 August 2015

Whether you are just embarking on researching your family tree, or you're well along the journey but have struck dead ends and road blocks, the Family History Open Day can help.

It's the keynote event in Family History Month, and genealogy groups from around the region are setting up help tables at the Hutt Bowling Club on Saturday, August 22.

Anita West, convenor of the Hutt Valley Branch of the NZ Society of Genealogists, says they have also roped in representatives from Hutt City Libraries and Archives, the National and Alexander Turnbull libraries, Births, Deaths & Marriages, the NZ Defence Force Archives and Medals and, for the first time, a Pacific Island specialist Christine Liava'a, from Auckland.

"We're all there to help people find those elusive ancestors."

There are also several speakers:

  • 10.15am - Getting started on your family history and an introduction to Ancestry.com.au, with Christine Clement.
  • 11.30am - Using the free website FamilySearch.org, with Garry Howard.
  • 1 pm - Four "lightning talks" to help you add detail, collaborate with others and self-publish your family story.
  • 2.30pm - Digging deeper into New Zealand immigration and other records, with Christine Clement.

Family history open day, Saturday, August 22, 10am-4pm, Hutt Bowling Club, 6 Myrtle St, Lower Hutt.  $5 Entry.
