Ossining, formerly known as Sing Sing, was incorporated as a village in 1813. Ossining includes part of the village of Briarcliff Manor, as well as the village of Ossining.
The present-day town of Ossining had been included in the town of Mount Pleasant but separated from Mount Pleasant in 1845. It was originally part of the Manor of Philipseburgh. With the confiscation and sale of Frederick Philipse property after the American Revolutionary War, the Manor was broken up.

The Westchester County Historical Society also has extensive manuscripts giving inventories of many old cemeteries located throughout the County. Also check with the local historical society for information about the above cemeteries.

Many town historical societies hold maps of their vicinities, including copies of the Sanborn insurance maps. Insurance maps were detailed to the point of showing each building on each street so that insurance companies knew what to pay the insurer in the event of fire or destruction. Be sure to inquire at such institutions as well as at local libraries.

The only NY State censuses which survived are for the years 1905, 1915, and 1925. Check at your local LDS Family History Center for these films.

The Hudson River Chronicle began publishing in Sing Sing (Ossining) in 1837 and ceased in 1860. Microfilmed copies of years 1837 to 1850 are available at the New York Public Research Library.
The Republican began publishing in 1857 and ceased publication in 1882. Issues from 1869, 1870 and 1873 are available at the New York Public Research Library.
The Sing Sing Republican began publishing in 1882. A copy is available at the New York Public Research Library.
The Westchester Herald began publishing in Sing Sing in 1818 and continued to 1829. Microfilmed copies are available at the New York Public Research Library.
