North Castle was incorporated as a town in 1788. It includes the hamlets of Armonk, Banksville, and North White Plains. The land was granted by the English king under three royal patents: West Patent; Middle Patent; and East Patent. According to Richard Lederer's The Place-Names of Westchester County... (page 25),
"In 1721 the residents of the West, Middle and East Patents petitioned Governor William Burnett to combine them into a town and to select a name. The letters patent ordered "North Cassel or other-wise called California Pattent." Local-historians can find no reason for that name."
Up until 1851, Mile Square was the name of Armonk. This was so called because 600 acres was given to a Josiah Quimby and 600 acres is approximately one square mile. This Mile Square should not be confused with another area also called Mile Square which is found in Yonkers.
The famous "Battle of White Plains" was fought here during the American Revolutionary War. George Washington's headquarters still stands as a museum. North Castle is also known for its granite quarries which hired many stone masons from Europe who later settled in the area.

Many town historical societies hold maps of their vicinities, including copies of the Sanborn insurance maps. Insurance maps were detailed to the point of showing each building on each street so that insurance companies knew what to pay the insurer in the event of fire or destruction. Be sure to inquire at such institutions as well as at local libraries.
