LOCAL OR TOWN CENSUSES
A local census could be any listing of residents for a locality (i.e., town) taken to determine its population usually for tax or military purposes.
A search of PERSI turned up the following local or town censuses. If you are unfamiliar with PERSI, Periodical Source Index, ask at your local Family History Center (FHC) for a copy of their research guide giving details on PERSI. Most FHCs have PERSI available on microfiche as well as CD-ROM. Copies are also available at Ancestry.com, if you are a subscriber to their web services.
Locality/Census Year, Vol./No., Issue Date, Publication Name
Bedford/1698, 38/3, July 1907, NY Genealogical & Biographical Society Record (NYG&BR)

Eastchester/1698, 38/2, April 1907, NYG&BR
Eastchester Men aged 16-60/1710, 38/3, July 1907, NYG&BR

* The PERSI index does not identify whether the Westchester cited above is the town or the county. However, it is presumed that this census is the Village of Westchester.
Miscellaneous Censuses
Miscellaneous censuses were taken for a variety of reasons. One such "census" is the List of Dog (Owners) in Lewisboro in 1848 as transcribed for us by Jean Ann Orser Lupinetti.
A Poll List for the First Election District of the Town Of Eastchestedr for 1861is available on-line for free viewing at the
Virtual Archives on the Westchester County Archives
web site. The pages were scanned and uploaded to this web site.
Also available at the
Virtual Archives
is the scanned images of the Eastchester Book of Colored People which dates from the 1790s through the early 1820s.
FEDERAL CENSUS
A Federal Census was taken in the USA at ten-year intervals beginning in 1790. The most recent Federal Census available to the public is the one for 1930. Microfilmed copies of these censuses as well as indexes for some years and/or states are available at LDS FHCs, branches of the National Archives, libraries and historical societies. Please note that in the FHC Locality Catalog, the census information is listed under "United States" as well as under "New York" State and not under the county names.

CAVEAT:Transcribing the census is a slow and tedious task. Therefore, please have patience. When a town has been totally transcribed, it will be added to this site and the town link will be added. If you're in a hurry to obtain this information, I suggest that you contact your local Family History Center or regional branch of the National Archives and request the census microfilm. Locating Enumeration Districts in the 1930 Federal Census
Steve Morse has created an excellent and easy to use One-Step Search Engine entitled "Obtaining EDs for the 1930 Census in One Step (Large Cities)." This very helpful site can be seen at http://www.stevemorse.org/census/
The National Archives (NARA) has also made available a 1930 census microfilm Locator at their web site at: http://1930census.archives.gov/. According to the NARA publication 1930 Federal Poluplation Census: Catalog of National Archives Microfilm, the locator is described as follows:
"You can use this Locator to find the roll of film you need for a specific county, township, or enumeration district. You can also search by place or institution.
The Locator also guides you to sepcific Soundex microfilm rolls for the 12 Southern Soundexed states.
The Locator is not a family or name index, and it is not a digital version of the census."
New York State Census
FamilySearch.org has the 1905 NY State census available online for free for either searching or browsing.
