Basie, William "Count" b. August 21, 1904. d. April 26, 1984.
Jazz Musician. Basie was one of the greatest bandleaders of all-time, epitomizing the jazz of south-western America. He rose to fame after taking over Bennie Moten's band in 1935. His second great band, from the 1950's onwards, relied more on arrangments, typically from Neil Hefti and Ernie Wilkin's. As a pianist Basie was equally great and was intensely rhythmic, using as few notes as possible. (bio by K. Smith). He earned the nickname, "Count," because of his stylish way of playing the piano.

The original lead singer of the R&B group, The Main Ingredient. Among the songs he recorded were "You've Been My Inspiration," "I'm So Proud," "Spinning Around," "I'm Better Off Without You," "Magic Shoes" and "Black Seeds (Keep On Growing)." Originally from Indianapolis, he earned awards for his vocal abilities in the Army. He was a PFC at the time of his separation following a 2-year enlistment, 5 Oct 61-4 Oct 63. After his death, he was succeeded by Cuba Gooding, Sr., who recorded "Everybody Plays The Fool" and a succession of other hits.

R & B saxaphonist. King Curtis was one of the most popular session musicians of the 50's and 60's, playing with many rock and roll hall of famers including Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, The Coasters, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Duane Allman...He is the king of r&b saxophone -- Playing the famous sax solo's on The Coasters "Yakety-Yak" and Aretha Franklin's "Respect". He had hits under his own name also, Soul Twist (1961), Soul Serenade (1964), and Memphis Soul Stew (1967). He was 37 years old, career in full swing, when he was senselessly stabbed to death on the steps of his home in New York City on August 13, 1971.

Roosevelt, Quentin [original gravestone] b. October 19, 1897. d. July 14, 1918.
US Military Lieutenant and son of Theodore Roosevelt (US President). Lt. Quentin Roosevelt was the youngest of former US President Theodore Roosevelt's four sons. He was killed when his Nieuport 28 aircraft was shot down behind German lines on July 14, 1918. German soldiers placed a crude cross over his grave, near the rural French village of Chamery, near Reims. The grave subsequently underwent some revisions and was treated as a pilgrimage site by admiring US and French citizens. On July 12, 1944, Quentin's oldest brother, Brig Gen. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., died of a heart attack in Normandy following the WW II invasion of France. After the war, the two brothers were buried side by side at the US Military Cemetery, Colville-ser-Mer, Omaha Beach. The original cross placed on Quentin's grave is now on display at the US Air Force Museum, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. Quentin's mother, Edith Kermit Roosevelt, later had a stone monument fashioned to cover her son's grave. When Quentin was reinterred, the stone was moved to his present location on the lawn of the Roosevelt home, Sagamore Hill, Oyster Bay, Long Island, NY.

Roosevelt advocated a policy of intervention in the Americas. He began construction of the Panama canal. Domestically, Roosevelt sought to protect Americaıs natural resources against exploitation.
