Ruth Jordan Thoden My ggg-grandfather, John JORDAN born March 9, 1764 (don't know where); married probably in Orange Co., NY 1785 to Julia SWARTOUT who was born 1769 d/o Jacobus SWARTOUT. Jacobus was living in 1785 in Sugar Loaf, town of Warwick, Orange Co., NY and assume his 16-year-old daughter, Julia, was living with him at the time of her wedding. John JORDAN does NOT appear in the 1790 census of NYS as 1-2-1...as he would having had two males born to Julia by census time 1790. By 1800, John/Julia and family residing in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY beside her father, Jacobus, and her brother, Moses...She died between 1807 and 1810. An unnamed male child born to her in 1807 and she does not appear in the 1810 census with John. John continued to reside in Cherry Valley until about 1848 when he it was thought he joined three of his sons in the town of Wirt, Allegany Co., NY but having recently found his will probate in Cooperstown, county seat, Otsego Co,learned he died town of Pike, Wyoming County, NY which is where one of his three daughters had settled. He died 1/26/1850 and is buried on lot of my gg-grandfather, Jacob JORDAN, in Mount Hope Cemetery, Friendship, Allegany Co., NY (town in which I was born and brought up) Issue of this marriage: MICHAEL who stated in 1855 census for Steuben Co., NY that he had been born in Orange Co., NY. WILLIAM who settled Steuben Co. JESSE who settled Steuben Co. All of these three died in Steuben County, NY. BETSEY - married Sebastion WELLER and lived in Canajoharie, Montgomery Co, NY ISAIAH - migrated from Otsego to Steuben Co. as young lad with his brother, Michael and lived with Michael until he married Polly Dakin, d/o Elisha...so after marriage, Elisha Dakin and Isaiah with bride migrated to town of Wirt, Allegany Co., NY and bought virgin land there. JOHN and JAMES both settled in early 1820's in Cuba, Allegany Co., NY. JULIA MARGARET - married Charles Phelps and settled Pike, Wyoming Co., NY ANDREW - migrated from Otsego Co. to Allegany Co. buying land adjacent to his brother,Isaiah in town of Wirt.JACOB - my gg-grandfather also migrated from Otsego Co. to Allegany Co. buying land adjacent to that of Isaiah. SALLY - married John Dygert and lived Canajoharie, Montgomery Co, NY UNNAMED SON - probably died at birth...Tradition among family members is that the JORDAN clan came from Ireland, but I've no proof one way or another. I've analyzed ALL Jordans who lived in Orange County, NY before, during and after Revolution and find no connection with my John JORDAN. Julia, wife of John, had two brothers,Aaron and Moses SWARTOUT who married at the Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Orange Co., NY but no record of John Jordan or Julia Swartout being baptized, married or ever attending this church. I've pretty much ruled out the possibility of my John JORDAN being a YORDON (Palatine family who came to Mohawk Valley between 1709-1711)..I've not ruled out possibility that my John JORDAN may have been product of a JORDAN family who were Tories and fled to Canada he returning after the Revolution. There was such a family in Westchester Co., NY - John JORDAN born Scotland in 1729 descendants....but my John not part of this family.

There may also have been a brother Charles born NY. The time frame for this is the 1820's. By 1845 the family is in Bureau Co IL. Please help.

Sherry Morell Shelts Lyman MORELL was born in NY, in 1799. Married Caroline Gardner, and their son Alvah June was born there 05 July 1827. All three baptized by Rev Wm Flagler, when the Presbyterian Church in WOODHULL was formed 15 Oct 1831. They appear in the 1830 Steuben Co (Woodhull) NY Census. Lyman and Caroline Morell/Morelle had moved to Michigan by the 1840 Census. Caroline had died, and Lyman remarried. He and his new wife joined a wagon train going West in the early 1840's, he apparently died on the trip, as his teen aged son, who had been left in Michigan with a couple named "Vandewater", never heard from him again. I recently did the entire Steuben Co 1830 census, and found several names that were similar. I grew up being told that at one point, our name had been spelled MORELLE, that there NEVER were 2-R's, but several that I just found there, had 2-R's! We never have known who Caroline's parents were either. Also found a Gardner who joined the same church, a year after Lyman and Caroline. We have had Morell Reunion's here in Mich, for over 60 years, and no one has ever been able to find who Lyman Morell and Caroline Gardner's parent's are. I have taken on the job, and have told them that when I arrive with bell's on, they will know I have found Lyman's parent's. I believe with all my heart, one of these new subject's I have found, is my link to Lyman and Caroline's family's! For the first time in the 6 years since my grandparent's died, I have hope's of finding his Morell?Morelle line!

Judy Stromsted (e-mail updated 3/28/02) Looking for more definitive information on parents of William Emmett JOHNSTON (b. 21 May 1872 in Binghamton, NY; d. 1947, Corning, NY) and Johanna BECHTOLD (dates & places unknown). Also, he was City Gardener when Dennison Park was built - looking for any information on his position, when he was hired and how long he was on job. Occupation was always stated on family records as a glassblower at CGW. Was City Gardener an occupation or just an avocation? Also, looking for church affiliations for both.

I've hit the brick wall on this one: William Emmett JOHNSTON's brother, Charles H. JOHNSTON, son of Henry R. Johnstone and Celestra Lauter. ** Unsure of DOB or where, but assumption is 1868-1877. Last listing in Corning-Painted Post city directory was 1941. Residence was 411 E. Third St. and occupation was listed as "retired". Before retirement, according to the city directory, he was listed as a meat handler/teamster. Wife's name listed as "Ethel".

** data added 3/28/02 - Originally I had the name of Celestra LAUTER for William Emmett Johns(t)on's mother; that is the name in the family Bible and the name given on her marriage record. BUT, it is written as Celestia LOBDELL on her husband's pension records.

HERSHBERG, ROWLEY, MOORE. Am researching my paternal g-grandparent's side: HERSHBERG, ROWLEY, MOORE. I have wedding certificates for Henry HERSHBERG who married Helen ROWLEY, 3/21/1868 in what was then Hornellsville, NY and Frances A. HERSHBERG, who married Charles H. MOORE, 11/14/1896 in Hornellsville. I am told that the former Miss Rowley's family dates back to the American Revolution, and that Mr. Hershberg or one of his ancestors was the Mayor of Moscow. I have no information on Mr. Moore. Information on any of the above would be tremendously appreciated. Allison M. Biagioni
JESMORE/JESSMORE/JESMER My gggrandmother, Mary Jane Jesmore, was born somewhere in New York in 1839. Her obituary states that she was born in Morley, Steuben County, New York. Since obituaries are notoriously inaccurate and I can't find a Morley in Steuben County, I had pretty well decided that she was born in Morley, St Lawrence County. Yesterday I received a copy of her younger brother's obituary and it says he too was born in Steuben County, New York. I can find Jesmores in St Lawrence County but no records of Jesmores in Steuben County (although admittedly I haven't looked real hard) Mary Jane's husband (married in Iowa) Monroe Sellen and his family were well documented to have been from Steuben County. I would like to share information with anyone interested in these surnames. I would really like to clear up the question of where Mary Jane and Edward came from. Vicky Drake
