History of Smith Pond

David Smith came from Paisley, Scotland and was a linen weaver.  He immigrated to Amsterdam NY in 1802.  In 1810 he came to Howard and bought 172 acres of woods from the Government.  He cleared the land and built a log cabin. In 1832 he built a brick home and that is located at the corner of Burdin Hill Road and Smith Pond road on the northwest corner.  He also built the first frame house in Howard.  1000 pounds of Maple syrup and Maple sugar was made from the 564 trees he tapped.
