From a unsigned letter dated Oct. 25, 1973

.........."We found a Sterling family living at the school house.  Mrs. Sterling said she knew where the stones were and offered to take us to there.  We found two stones by a dead elm a long ways south of the school house.  There was a foot stone - blank.

the stones read:

Rufus Herrick - June 30, 1828

wife of Rufus Herrick - June 25, 1827

Evidently the wife's name has been broken off her stone - In the Herrick genealogy her name was Jerusha Pierce a distant relative of Pres. Franklin Pierce.  Their daughter Sally married Dad's Uncle William."
