  • Died - On 15th inst., Jacob H. Ullman, alias Alonzo Terner, employed in the Sash and Door factory of Sage and Co. in Addison, committed suicide by hanging himself; 31 yrs. old; parents reside in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., wife in Canajoharie. (from Addison Advertizer)

  • Died - At his residence near the village, Tues., 28th ult., Capt. William Hamilton, in the 68th year of his age. He was born in one of the southern states from which he came while a child with his father's family to Greene Co.; with a merchantile business until 1817 when he removed to Bath. For some years he was a merchant in Bath, a Justice of the Peace, and in 1828 the County Clerk.

October 13, 1858 Wednesday

  • Died - Richard B. Stewart, formerly of Bath, but late of NYC. He Died at a boarding house Fri. last, of apoplexy. He was a native of Herkimer Co., but spent most of his life in Seneca and Steuben Cos.; 67 yr. old.
  • Died - In Urbana on 10th inst., Dyer Cranmer, Esq., in the 70th yr. of his age. He was among the earliest settlers of the county and a Democrat.
  • Married - In Bath on Oct. 10th by Rev. N. N. Beers, Mr. Elijah Townsend of Urbana and Miss Mary Bucher of Bath.
  • Married - In Cameron on Sept 24th by C. W. Mason, Esq., Mr. T. G. Horton of Cameron and Miss Lucy M. Prentiss, daughter of William Prentiss, Esq., late from Wisconsin.

  • Accident - John Shoemaker and another Irishman got into a quarrel Sat. evening last at the premises of George Drake of Bath. Mr. Drake ordered them to leave and Shoemaker pitched into Drake and fractured his jaw.

  • Died - In Woodhull on 27th ult. at house of sister-in-law Esq. Edwards, Mrs. Electa P. Rigbee, widow of the late William Rigbee; aged 69 yrs. She was born in Middlebury, New Haven Co., CT. and at the age of 18 Married and moved to Coventry, Chenango Co. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, then later the Baptist Church. Funeral on the 29th.

  • Married - Thurs., Jan. 20th by Rev. Mr. Sunderland, Mr. E. Bonton of Bath to Miss Maggie Fox of Avoca.
  • Died - In Bath on Jan. 31st, King Watkins, brother of Simon Watkins; known as the "Mayor of Bath" and last of the Watkins family brought here from Virginia as slaves of Major Thoronton and acquired freedom by the laws of the state; about 80 yr.

  • Died - During the week, Mrs. Hopkins committed suicide in Prattsburgh; no particulars.
  • Died - In Tyrone, by suicide, Fri. last week, Mr. Jarvis Bailey who resided 3 mi. from Weston; hung self; about 40 yrs.; leaves wife and one daughter.
  • Died - In Tyrone, by hanging self, Charles Williams, about 25 yrs., Sat. last; son of late Henry S. Williams.

  • Moved - Mr. B. Ruggles, Esq., late of Atlanta, GA, moved to Bath and started a law practice; he spent his early life in Bath.
  • Died - Sunday at Bath, Adam Haverling, aged 85 yrs., 5 mos.; one of earliest settlers; lived 40 yrs. on a farm one mi. north of the village; leaves a son as his only relative, Mr. George S. Haverling of Bath.
  • Died - In Italy, Yates Co., Richard Haight Van Loon, eldest brother of J. C. Van Loon, Esq.; aged 39.

  • Died - In Campbell on 12th inst. of congestion of the lungs, Delphine Bonham, daughter of Mrs. Mary Bonham and adopted daughter of Dr. N. D. Gardner of Elmira, aged 15 yrs.
  • Farewell address given by Rev. George D. Stewart, pastor of the Old School Presbyterian Church in Bath for 8 yrs.
  • Accident - Charles Smith of Addison Hill shot wife in the leg while cleaning his gun on Sat. the 21st.

  • Died - Mr. William Wilkes on the 30th ult., as a result of an accident at Townley and Co. Steam Mill, where he was an engineer; he became entangled in a machine and Died in 20 minutes; body taken to his mother's house.
  • Died - Mr. O. F. Rhoda of Hornby, found "in dying condition" between his house and barn, after having retired for dinner from washing his sheep.
  • Married - At Trinity Church in NYC on 2nd inst. by Rev. Dr. Ogilby, T. M. Mc Cay of Bath to Miss Fanny S. Dunn of Brooklyn.
  • Married - In Howard on May 26th by Rev. P. C. Robertson, Samuel Mc Kibbin and Mary Jane Stewart, all of Howard.

  • Died - Elijah Taylor in Hornellsville; while running a span of horses he was dragged by the horses; aged 66 yrs.

  • Married - In Corning on 17th by J. S. Robinson, Esq., Mr. James Sweeney of Urbana to Miss Amelia Loucks of Erwin.

  • Accident - James Madden of Avoca severly injured on July 4th by kick of a horse; mangled and bruised, but hope of recovery.
  • Died - From suicide, at his dwelling in Fremont, Hopstell Hastings, formerly of Bath, by hanging; wife Died about 3 yrs. ago; he was about 58 yrs. old.
  • Married - By N. N. Beers at Eagle Hotel in Bath on June 22nd, Mr. Levi Norris to Miss Phebe Clark, both of Pulteney.

  • Died - Joseph Hallet at residence in Canisteo on Thurs. last, after being run over by a train near Crosbyville.
  • Died - Major Holcomb, from suicide by cutting own throat; he shot wife, but she is still alive; he was a farmer in T. of Benton, Yates Co.
  • Rape - Ephraim Cornish of Pulteney was tried for rape on the person of his step-daughter; found guilty and sentenced to Auburn prison for 15 yrs.
  • Married - In Prattsburgh on 9th inst. by Rev. B. C. Smith, Hon. Elisha Doubleday, M. D. of Yates Co., to Miss Caroline Williams of Chemung Co.
  • Married - In Campbell on June 29th by Rev. B. F. Pratt, Mr. James G. Terbell to Miss Frances F. Knox, daughter of Mr. John P. Knox, all of T. of Campbell.
  • Died - Of consumption in Caton on July 1st, Nelson Legrand Brees, eldest son of Mr. A. B. Brees; aged about 24 yrs.
  • Died - In Corning at his residence on July 1st, Mr. Silas Gorton; aged 78 yrs.

  • Died - William Goff of Howard at residence of son-in-law, Mr. Rice, on 14th inst. in 80th yr. of age; moved to county in 1812.
  • Married - In Coopers Plains Hotel on July 10th by J. A. Shults, J. P., Mr. Sterling Austin of Campbell to Miss Polly Scofield of Hornby.
  • Died - Charles Bruner, aged 13, son of Lewis Bruner of Jasper, on June 27th; coroner ruled accidental death; thrown from horse and hit head on stone; body found mutilated, supposed by dogs.

  • Died - At Hornellsville on Mon., the 8th inst., Mr. Elisha Wilbur, aged 76 yr., 11 mo.; he was an early settler in the T. of Howard, moving there in June, 1812; he was born in T. of Barnard, Windsor Co., VT on Sept. 8, 1782.
  • Died - In Prattsburgh after a long illness, Mr. Daniel Burroughs in his 76th yr.; he was born in Old Stretford, CT, in 1784; moved with family to Italy, Yates Co. in 1817; thence to Prattsburgh; leaves a widow, to whom Married for 53 yrs.

  • Died - Mrs. Snell, wife of Levi Snell, a resident of the T. of Howard; Died suddenly at the residence of Washington Billington in Bath on Sun. morning last; physician declared it a case of poisoning.
  • Died - Mr. Merriman, found dead in Dansville; just been liberated from jail for stealing a hide; leaves a wife and four children; Died from exposure.

  • Verdict - That Mrs. Levi Snell Died of poisoning on Dec. 10th, but not able to determine if it was accidental.
  • Anniversary - Golden wedding anniversary celebration on the 10th inst. at the residence of James De Puy; wedding by Rev. Mr. Everett, pastor of the M. E. Church.
  • Died - Paul Salon or Salone, who worked for Henry Kelley in Caton, Sun. a.m.; leaves two daughters in Troupsburgh. (from Corning Journal of 15th)

December 28, 1859 Wednesday

  • Died - In Savona on Dec. 20th, Mrs. Mary Billington, wife of M. L.; in 44th yr. of age; of typhoid fever.
  • Died - In shocking accident, Mr. James Thompson of Centreville and Mr. George Fenderson of Painted Post were on their way to Corning and while crossing the railroad tracks in a cutter, a train suddenly came. Mr. Thompson was killed instantly, as was the horse; Mr. Fenderson Died later. Mr. Thompson owned a tannery at Centreville and left a wife and 4 children; Mr. Fenderson dealt in stoves in Painted Post and left a wife.
