  • Accident - On Mon. morning last, Robert Stewart of Bath, three fingers almost entirely cut off while cutting feed for horses with newly invented straw cutter.

  • Married - At Whitney's Point, Broome Co. on May 20th by Rev. Wm. Gates, Mr. La Rue P. Thompson of Corning and Miss Harriet A. Beach of the former place.
  • Married - In Corning on 20th inst. by Rev. C. Morton, Mr. Henry G. Tuthill and Miss Kate A. Townley, both of Corning.
  • Married - In Coopers Plains, May 17th, by Rev. P. P. Anderson, Mr. P. H. Castle and Louisa Van Etten, both of Gibson.
  • Married - On 19th inst. by Rev. Dr. Murdock, Samuel Hotchkin, Esq. and Miss Mary Ann Gray, of Elmira.
  • Departure - Wm. M. Nichols, Esq., leaving town on "tour of inspection, in reference to his final location in the great west"; a gentleman, ardent Democrat, good lawyer, would "commend him to any community."

  • Died - By drowning, John Bleeser, aged about 14 yrs.; fell through the railroad bridge at Painted Post into the river; June 8th.
  • Died - Very suddenly, June 4th, Mr. N. Vischer Knickerbocker, aged 49 yrs. Born in Waterford, NY but for many years a resident of this place. Family will mourn husband and father's loss.
  • Accident - John Gorman, lad of 14 yrs., hurt by steam sawing machine at Painted Post and suffered broken and lacerated leg and skull fracture.

  • Died - Dr. Andrew F. Oliver at his residence in Penn Yan on 11th inst.
  • Died - In Hornellsville, June 14th, Frank, son of R. L. Brundage in his 9th year.
  • Died - At Greenwood, June 10th, Mrs. Charity Brundage, wife of Benjamin S. Brundage in the 70th year of her age.

  • Biography - Gen. George Mc Clure, who moved to Elgin, Kane Co., IL in 1835; Died summer of 1851; had mills in Cold Springs, which he sold in 1814 to Henry A. Townsend for $14,000.
  • Died - Thurs. morning last, Henry Hill, a businessman in the 39th year of his age, after falling near a railroad bridge and fracturing skull; leaves wife and 2 children. (from Elmira Advertiser.)
  • Died - At residence at Cooper's Plains on Wed., June 24th, Mr. Daniel Ogden, aged 48.
  • Married - At res. of bride's parents in Wheeler on 25th inst. by Rev. B. C. Smith, Mr. Joshua Healy, Jr. of S. Dansville and Miss Julia A. Chichester.

  • Died - Walter Sands, single man about 40 years, committed suicide on the 21st inst. in T. of Benton.
  • Died - Daughter of Deacon Beach of S. Dansville was so severely burned on Thurs. of last wk. that she Died next day. She was reading in bed with a candle; a sister also badly burned.
  • Married - In Addison July 15th by James Whittenhall, Mr. George C. Crooks and Miss Helen Stiles, both of Nelson, PA.
  • Married - In Bath July 20th by Rev. C. M. Gardner, Mr. R. Barrett and Mrs. S. Odell, both of Urbana.
  • Died - In Bath on July 22nd, Spencer Howell, youngest child of R. L. and F. M. Underhill, aged 2 yrs., 22 days.
  • Died - On July 30th, Daniel Howell, son of R. L. and F. M. Underhill, aged 6 yrs., 10 mo.
  • Died - In Bath on Sat., Aug. 3rd, Helen Augusta, daughter of Charles and Betsy Purdy, aged 1 yr., 2 mo.
  • Died - In Avoca on July 28th, Mr. John B. Payne.
  • Died - In Thurston July 14th, of consumption, Lucinda, wife of Samuel K. Wilber, in her 45th year.
  • Died - In Clinton, NC, Mrs. Cornelia M., wife of Dr. Wm. G. Micks and daughter of Gen. Ransom Rathbone of Rathbonesville.
  • Died - July 25th, Fri., at home in Rathbonesville, Mrs. Catherine Rathbone, wife of Gen. Ransom Rathbone, in the 67th year of her age. She was a native of England, immigrated when young and lived in NYC and Oxford, Chenango Co.; for past 17 yrs. she has lived in Rathbonesville.

  • Accident - Mon. evening last, Mr. Van Duzer, station agent at Painted Post with his wife and two other ladies; horse over-turned buggy and all thrown to ground; none seriously injured.
  • Accident - Miss Frances Sweet, daughter of Senator Sweet of Bath, on a visit to Syracuse fell and broke both arms.

  • Biography - Henry W. Rogers, Esq.; born in Unadilla, Apr. 4, 1806.
  • Died - Rosorous K. Barnes, about 24, of T. of Orange, drowned last week in Allegany River near Hemlock Mills, Catt. Co.
  • Died - At residence in Painted Post, Dr. George Traver.
  • Died - Mary Gunsolus of Prattsburg, daughter of John E. Gunsolus, about 19 yrs. Also Died within the last 2 yrs, her sister Christina, about 16 yrs. Mr. and Mrs. Gunsolus have no other children.
  • Accident - Fri. morning the 7th inst., Irishman named Gollagher getting in an empty cattle car, while train in motion, fell back on track and lost left leg below the knee.
  • Accident - Mr. Mason Bolt, resident of Bath, engaged in profession as a painter at Groff's Mill, fell from scaffolding and broke leg. Dr. Case attended.

  • Accident - Tues., James Dailey, driver from Millport boat, caught between two boats causing dislocation of hip.

  • Died - At Elmira on 15th inst., Alvin Corbin, formerly of Painted Post, aged 56.
  • Died - At Springwater on Sun., the 20th inst., John Metcalf, formerly of Bath.
  • Died - At residence in Bath, on 20th inst., George B. King.
  • Died - Jonathan Andrus, 22 yrs., run over by train at Starkey Station; has mother and father in Starkey.
  • Accident - Fri., last, F. M. Patten, proprietor of Hornellsville House, seriously injured using threshing machine while getting wheat for Mr. Erastus Stephens.
  • Died - Samuel M. Chamberlain, formerly of Bath, killed near Brownstown, IN on 5th inst. by falling from platform of railroad car; employed by railroad; remains buried in Osgood where he lived.
  • Died - Shocking and fatal accident killing Anna Burdick, wife of Edwin Burdick at Honey Run, 2 mi. from Hornellsville last Sat. She was shot through the heart and killed instantly by gun discharged by Lewis Peterson who was trying to kill a chicken. Mrs. Burdick leaves husband and 8 children, the two youngest being twins nine months old. Mrs. Brudick was about 40 yrs.

  • Accident - Ira Irway of Bath getting out of wagon, fell, dislocated his spine last Sat.; still alive but recovery doubtful.
  • Married - On 29th of Oct. by Rev. E. Benedict of Bath at the home of H. Sherwood, Esq. in Addison, Mr. George Edwards of Bath and Miss Sarah A. Sherwood of Woodhull.
  • Married - On Oct. 26th by James Lindsay, Esq., Mr. Jacob Hammel and Miss Julia Hammel (sic), all of Bath.

  • Accident - At Hammondsport Nov. 1st, Sun., Mr. Otis B. Smith, wife and child and Mr. Bancroft, crossing bridge in buggy, horse frightened and leaped bridge; all injured.
  • Died - At Brattleboro, VT, on 2nd inst., James D. Bemis for many yrs. editor of Ontario Repository in Canandaguia, in 75th yr.
  • Died - In Canisteo at residence of son on 5th inst., George W. Taylor, Esq., one of early settlers of Canisteo.

  • Married - By Rev. George D. Stewart on Thurs., Jan. 28th, George Loucks of Bath and Miss Henrietta, eldest daughter of Charles Brundage of Thurston.
  • Married - At Bath on Wed., Jan. 27th by Rev. O. R. Howard, Francis M. Bixby of NYC and Louisa, daughter of the late William W. Mc Cay, Esq.
  • Married - In Campbell on Jan. 27th by Rev. O. P. Alderman, Mr. Orson D. Davis of Little Falls, Herkimer Co., and Miss Melissa Noles of Campbell.
  • Died - At Kanona, George, 12 yr. old son of Zeba Brdley (sic). George and brother Zera, age 14, were skating on mill pond above Kanona Mills. Zera went on ice too thin and broke through the ice. George came to his rescue, but the ice gave way, his strength failed, and he passed under and drowned. Zera succeeded in getting out safely.
  • Died - At Wheeler on 12th ult., Albertus Larrowe in the 82nd yr. of his age. He was born in NJ in 1776; in 1797 he moved to Steuben and was employed by Col. Williamson as a carpenter. He Married the daughter of late Wm. Aulls, one of earliest settlers of Urbana. Albertus located in Reading in 1800, then in Wheeler in 1807. His son is Hon. Jacob Larrowe, late a County Judge.
  • Died - At residence of son Rev. A. Wright in Cleveland, OH, Erastus Wright, formerly of Bath, in 71st year of his age.
  • Died - At Kanona on 19th inst., William J. Neally, aged 68 yr.
  • Died - At St. Clair, MI on 26th ult., Parmelia, wife of Henry Whiting, formerly of Bath.

February 10, 1858 Wednesday

  • Died - Darius Crosby at his residence in T. of Cohocton, aged 68. He was from Hurtwick, Otsego Co. and one of earliest settlers of Cohocton.
  • Died - At his residence near Savona, Fri., Feb. 5th, Henry Mc Elwee in his 88 yr. He came to Bath with Col. Williamson 63 yrs. ago; purchased land on Mud Creek, now occupied by son Henry Mc Elwee, Jr.
  • Rumor - "Rumor current in town" that Edwin Miller, formerly of Bath, who removed to Kansas, was shot with a revolver by a man whose vote he'd challenged in a late election there.

  • Died - At Bath on 13th inst. of apoplexy, Mr. James T. Johnson, aged 77 yr.
  • Died - At Bath on 6th inst., Agnes Ayers, daughter of the late Nathan Stevens, aged 9 yr., 10 mo.
  • Died - At West Farms, Westchester Co., on 9th inst., Rev. Isaac W. Platt, aged 69 yr.; was for many yrs. pastor of the Bath Presbyterian Church.

  • Died - At Wheeler on 24th ult., Mrs. Dolly Amelia, wife of Gen. O. F. Marshall, in her 69th yr. She was the daughter of the late Mathew Nealy and a native of Schenectady Co. She lived in Wheeler 40 yrs. and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
  • Accident - John H. Dailey of Pulteney was kicked by a horse in the head; he is 28 yr. old, with a wife and 3 children. (Taken from the Penn Yan Democrat.)

  • Died - Hon. John Grieg of Canandaigua on Apr. 9, aged 77. (Paper of Apr. 21 gives biography.)

  • Died - Of inflamation of the lungs at residence in Bath, John Billington, in his 40th year; was born in Montgomery Co.; four yrs. resident of Bath; member of Dutch Reformed Church, then Presbyterian.

  • Letter - Old townsman, P. P. Hubbell, has been elected one of the Supervisors of Winona, MN.
  • Married - At Milwaukie, WI on 22nd ult. by Rev. J. N. Buchanan, Hiram Potter, Jr., formerly a resident of Bath, to Miss Julie E., daughter of Dr. A. Blanchard, of Milwaukie. Mr. Potter is the city editor of the "Daily Wisconsin."
  • Accident - At Painted Post, conductor E. C. Gray of Hornellsville considerably bruised in a railroad accident; also injured were track supervisor, H. D. V. Pratt of Hornellsville and brakeman Mr. Johnson.

  • Visit - From an old townsman, A. J. Brundage, on his return from the south, much improved in health.
  • Married - In Kanona on 18th ult. by Rev. H. G. Clark, Mr. Franklin Bradley to Miss Elizabeth Dawley, both of Kanona.
  • Accident - Hiram Wygant, proprietor of the Prattsburgh Steam Grist Mill, in an accident at the mill; injured and leg amputated.

  • Married - In Hammondsport on June 17th by Rev. D. E. Loveridge, Jacob L. Garrison of Rochester and Henriette Randal of Hammondsport.
  • Died - In Jasper on June 1st, Thomas B. Sheffield, 61 yrs. old; native of Yorkshire, Eng.; last 40 yrs. in this country; last 30 yrs. in this county.

  • Accident - The wife and daughter of William Brooks, who live one mile east of Bath, had a serious accident while riding in their carriage; Mrs. Brooks found lying under the horse and carriage; both were recovered.
  • Drowning - A child by the name of Murphy, a boy, aged 6 or 7, in Canisteo River near Hornellsville.

  • Accident - Rev. P. Mc Kinstry, a presiding elder of the Bath district, was in a horse accident at Whitings Mills; he is recovering at home in this village.

  • Died - At her residence in Painted Post, Mary Patterson, wife of Robert Patterson, Esq.
  • Died - At Prattsburgh, Mrs. Elizabeth Hopkins, on the 31st ult.; widow of the late John Hopkins, Esq.; in the 91st yr. of her age; moved to town in 1806.
  • Visit - A fellow citizen and friend, H. M. Miller, formerly of Bath, now of Coloma, CA, visiting in town.

August 11, 1858 Wednesday

  • Died - Capt. Benjamin Smead, veteran printer, on 8th inst., at the residence of his grandson, T. G. Swart, in Bath; 83 yr., 3 mo.; former editor, who started publishing in 1816.
  • Died - Judge Healy, at his residence in Dansville on the 28th ult.; he was among the first settlers of this county; removed from Vermont to Dansville in 1816.

  • Biography - Memoir concerning Benjamin Smead, who Died last month. He was born in Greenfield, Mass. on 3 May 1775, son of David Smead and youngest of 12 children; served in the War of 1812.

  • Died - At his residence in Corning on 6th inst., William Bonham, Esq., one of the early settlers of the county.
