  • Died - Hon. Elijah Spencer, some yrs. since a member of Congress, and in 1846 the delagate from Yates Co. to the constitutional convention, Died at his residence in the town of Benton, Yates Co., on the 15th ult., aged 71 yrs.

  • Died - In Bath on the 9th ult., Mrs. Sarah Mc Elwee, in the 79th yr. of her age, wife of Henry Mc Elwee.

  • Biogaphy - Of Charles Cameron, Esq., late of Greene, Chenango Co., who Died Dec. 26, 1852, in the 80th yr. of his age. He was born April 26, 1773 in Inverness-shire, Scotland, son of Ewen Cameron. He had a younger brother, Dugald Cameron who cameto Bath from Scotland in 1795 and Died - March 30, 1828. Charles came to Bath with Col. Williamson and laid out the village, building mills and keeping a store. He Married Jane Mullender who Died Jan. 31, 1841. They had no children.
  • Married - In Bath on Jan. 10th by the Rev. George D. Stewart, Mr. Roswell Richardson to Miss Mary E. Willour.
  • Married - At Corning on the 10th inst. by the Rev. R. E. Willson, Mr. Smith Tucker of Avoca to Miss Hannah Folwell. (see next entry)
  • Married - At Corning on the 10th inst. by the Rev. R. E. Willson, at the same time as the above, Mr. David S. Peck of Avoca to Miss Emeline Edwards.
  • Died - In Bath on the 14th inst., John Whiting, aged 70 yrs. He was "one of those hardy pioneers who settled in this county when it was almost an unbroken wilderness."
  • Moved - S. H. Hammond, Esq., formerly of Bath, has become the editor of the Albany State Register.

  • Married - In Naples on Jan. 21st, Mr. B. Earls of Wheeler to Miss Susan Simerson of Pulteney.

  • Married - In St. Thomas Church in Bath on Feb. 2, by the Rector, Jeffrey S. Wisner of Elmira to Jeannette, daughter of A. R. Gould of Bath.
  • Died - In Rathbonesville on the 30th ult., John S. Gregory, son of Burt and Hannah Gregory of this town, aged 24 yrs.
  • Died - A son of Charles Noble of Hornellsville, while peddling apples on the train. It is supposed he fell between the cars while passing from one to another, on the 25th ult.. (from Hornellsville Trib.)

  • Died - At the residence of his son, Jared T. Benton, Esq. in Pulteney, Daniel Benton, aged 88 yrs., 6 mos. 10 days. He was born in Guilford, New Haven, CT on Sept. 2, 1772 and emigrated to western NY in 1828. He was the father of 12 children, nine of whom survive him. Two of them reside in CA (Rev. Joseph A. Benton of Sacremento and Rev. John Elliott Benton of Yreka), one son resides in WI, one in MI, two in Pulteney, one daughter in Cattaraugus Co. and two in Pulteney. He attended the weekly prayer meeting at the Presbyterian Church.

February 23, 1853 Wednesday

  • Married - In Avoca on Feb. 10 by Rev. J. Halsted, Mr. Lyman Arnold to Miss Magdalene Shults.
  • Died - On the 6th inst. in Hornellsville at the residence of his grandfather, Stephen Webb, Harlow M. Chamberlin, son of H. W. Chamberlin of Sheboygan, WI, after an illness of 3 days, aged 8 yrs.
  • Died - In Bath on Feb. 8, 1853, Mr. John De Witt in the 71st yr. of his age. He was born in Sussex Co., NJ on Dec. 19, 1782, from whence, with his parents, he emigrated to Elmira. Here he reided until his 20th yr. when he removed with his father's family to Starkey, Yates Co.; later he moved to Bath. He enlisted in the War of 1812 under Gen. Mc Clure. In his 36th yr. he was Married to Sally Carpenter, who still survives him.

  • Died - In Bath on Mar. 14th, Sarah Bull, wife of Col. Wm. H. Bull, in the 46th yr. of her age. She was among the earliest members of the St. Thomas' Church, having been baptised in 1826 and in the same year confirmed. Funeral on Mar. 16th at St. Thomas' Church.
  • Died - On the Island of St. Croix, West Indies, Feb. 10th, Mr. D. Cameron Davenport, eldest son of Col. I. Davenport.
  • Died - In Fairfield, VT on Mar. 6th, Mr. Samuel Robie, aged 59 yrs.

  • Died - In Bath on Mar. 18th, Maria Hubbell, wife of the Hon. Wm. Hubbell, daughter of the late Ansel Mc Call of Painted Post; aged 52 yrs. and 2 mos. "While assisting in the care of a sick member of the family, disease...fastened upon her also."

  • Died - In Thurston on Feb. 18th, Alice Rutherford, wife of Edward Rutherford, aged 52 yrs., 3 mos. and 27 days. She and her family were among the first settlers in this town.

  • Married - On Mar. 27th at Hammondsport, Mr. Edward Brundage of Urbana to Miss Mary Ann Robinson of Hammondsport.
  • Married - At Coppers Plains on Apr. 6th by Rev. Jno. Vandervere, D. D. of Easton, PA, Willard C. Morse of Painted Post to Mary E., daughter of John Cooper, Jr. of Coopers Plains.

April 20, 1853 Wednesday

  • Drowned - John Evans of the T. of Cohocton, while repairing the flume of a saw mill. He leaves a child about 10 yrs. of age.
  • Married - At Weston, Mar. 31st by Rev. Mr. Graham, Mr. John P. Emerson from sea and Mrs. Mary J. Bennett of Weston. "The above marriage took place under rather singular circumstances." Mr. Emerson about 25 yrs. of age, a brother of Mrs. Hoover of Weston, who owns a business as a tailoress. Mr. Emerson was at sea for 10-12 yrs. previous; was visiting his sister; found she had in her employ some 16 or 17 young women, of whom he asked if there was one who would marry him right away. Mrs. Bennett dropped her work and "declared herself ready for the nuptials." Within an hour "the parties were spliced." The next day "he left his charming bride for another voyage on the briny deep."   • Died - In the Town of Wayne, Lyman F. Noble, 37 yrs. of age, after about 3 yrs. of lingering consumption.

May 4, 1853 Wednesday

  • Died - In Wheeler on Apr. 9th, Mrs. Jenette, consort of Mr. Alburtus Larrowe, mother of Judge Larrowe of Bath; 78 yrs. of age. She was born in Lancaster, PA in 1776, daughter of Mr. Aulls, who was one of the first settlers of the town. The family removed to this county in 1793. She was Married - about 22 yrs. of age and had 12 children, 11 of whom survive her.
  • Died - In Avoca, Harriet A. Scovel on Apr. 9th. She was the daughter of Christopher and Harriet Cooper and in the 20th yr. of her age.
  • Married - In Avoca on Apr. 17th by Rev. J. Halsted, Mr. William Brooks to Miss Mary E. Nash, both of Bath.
  • Married - At Bath on Apr. 16th at the residence of H. Wixom by Rev. George D. Stewart, Mr. John A. Boyd of Woodhull to Mrs. Fanny Bailey of Prattsburgh.
  • Married - In Bath on Apr. 17th by Rev. W. E. Pinder, Mr. Charles Wesley Mason of Cameron to Miss Elanor Hicok of Bath.

  • Married - In Bath on May 3rd at the residence of Mrs. Gansevoort by Rev. George D. Stewart, Duncan S. Magee to Miss Catherine E. Gansevoort, eldest daughter of the late Ten Eyck Gansevoort, M. D., all of Bath.
  • Married - In Avoca on May 8th by Rev. Mr. Strough, Mr. Daniel Van Etten of Elmira, formerly of NJ, and Miss Mary Ann, only daughter of Corneliun Vader, Esq. of Avoca.

May 18, 1853 Wednesday

  • Fire - In Cameron at the dwelling of Barnabus Robinson on the 10th inst., Jeremiah Robinson made a narrow escape and his face and hands were burned badly. The house was insured for $1000.
  • Accident - Mr. Z. T. Mc Clusky of Watkins was thrown from his carriage on Wed. last and was so badly injured that recovery is doubtful. (from Havana Journal)
  • Married - In Prattsburgh on Apr. 21st by Rev. W. F. Purrington, Mr. J. Doubleday of Yates Co. to Miss M. E. Neff of Bath.
  • Married - In Pulteney on the 15th inst. by Elder O. P. Alderman, Mr. Edward S. Jenkins of Elmira to Miss Mary E. Parker of Pulteney.

May 25, 1853 Wednesday

  • Died - Z. T. Mc Clusky at Jefferson a day or two after his accident on May 11th. He was the Deputy Sheriff of Chemung Co.
  • Died - George W. Steffey at the mill of Dr. Gray in the town of Springwater on Thurs. last. He leaves a young wife and 3 children.
  • Fire - In Wheeler at the dwelling of M. P. Tuttle with all the contents destroyed; on the 12th inst.; supposed to have been the work of an incendiary.
  • Married - At Ogdensburgh on the 17th inst. at the 1st Presbyterian Church by Rev. L. Merril, Allen Chaney, Esq. of Ogdensburgh and Miss Candace C., youngest daughter of the late D. Rumsey, Esq. of Bath.
  • Died - On the 22nd inst. in Bath, Joshua Hallock, aged 83 yrs. (Poughkeepsie papers please copy.)

June 1, 1853 Wednesday

  • Serious accident - Mr. William Brooks of Bath was coming down the turnpike with a load of hay last Sat. and the yoke in his wagon broke. The wagon overturned and he was injured in several places. Mr. Brooks is now doing well.
  • Married - At Savona on May 29th by Rev. J. C. Mallory, Mr. John Sanford of Thurston and Miss Sophia R. Collier of Bath.
  • Married - In Eagle Valley on May 18th by Rev. J. C. Mallory, Mr. Edmund Dimick of Campbell to Miss Jane Thompson of Bath.
  • Died - In Bath on May 25th at the residence of son-in-law A. W. Moore, Mrs. Sarah Rosencrantz, aged 73 yrs. She was the widow of the late Dr. Simeon Rosencrantz of Liberty, Steuben Co.

June 8, 1853 Wednesday

  • Married - In Ossian on June 1st by Rev. L. W. Andrews, Mr. Aaron Mount to Miss Esther Porter of Ossian.
  • Married - At Hornellsville on the 24th ult. by Rev. John H. Day, Mr. Jedediah M. Baker of Canisteo to Miss Ann V. Olin of Hornellsville.
  • Surgery - Dr. R. P. Brown of Addison performed a surgical operation on May 7th by removing from the under lip of Nathaniel Bunker a rose cancer, over 2 yrs. standing. Mr. Bunker is 78 yrs. The whole operation of cutting and forming a new lip, closing and bandaging only occupied twelve minutes, with the old man lying on his back, stretched on a board without aid of ropes, chloroform or any other assistance. The wound was perfectly healed in 15 days. The cancer can be seen at Dr. Brown's office and weighs 1 1/2 oz.

June 15, 1853 Wednesday

  • Married - At the residence of Orren Smith in Bath on the 8th inst. by Rev. E. Benedict, Mr. Burrage Rice to Miss Mary F. Smith, all of Bath.
  • Married - In Prattsburgh on May 26th by Rev. B. C. Smith, Mr. Charles H. Van Housen to Miss Mary E. Lewis.
  • Married - On the 7th inst. by Rev. B. C. Smith, Mr. Hiram Wygant to Miss Samantha A. Fay.
  • Died - On the 13th inst., Mrs. Augusta A., wife of Samuel D. Hunter, eldest daughter of the late Rev. P. L. Whipple.
  • Died - Ezra Chapin Darrow, a "very worthy young man" of Prattsburgh, who was fatally injured on the 3rd inst. by a team taking fright; he Died - on the 5th.
  • Died - Mon. evening last in Bath, Nancy Tolliver, aged about 60 yrs. She was brought to this town as a slave 42 yrs. ago from Prince William Co., VA by John Fitzhugh, son-in-law of Wm. Helm. She was the widow of William Tolliver and was much respected, "always regarded as a favorite among the white families of this village."

June 22, 1853 Wednesday

  • Married - In Savona on June 15th at the residence of M. Terry, M. D. by Rev. George D. Stewart, Mr. Edward C. Thompson of Bath to Miss Sonora J., daughter of Dr. M. Terry.

June 29, 1853 Wednesday

  • Fire - The barn of James Brundage in N. Urbana was struck by lightning on Wed. last and burned to the ground, with a loss of 100 bushels of wheat. On the same day, the barn of Spencer Moore of Avoca shared a like fate, losing 2-3 tons of hay.
  • Died - A young man, James Robords, son of David L. Robords of Avoca, was returning home with friends when his horse took fright and started running. It is assumed he jumped or was thrown from the wagon and became entangled in the lines and dragged.
  • Married - In Bath on the 22nd inst. by Rev. D. Nutten, Mr. James B. Wheeler to Miss Elizabeth B. Pier, all of Bath.
  • Died - At the residence of her brother, John Faulkner, in the town of Urbana on Sat. the 35th (sic) inst. of consumption, Catherine Faulkner, aged about 50 yrs.; she was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Bath.
  • Died - In Wheeler on the 6th inst., Francis, son of D. D. Lewis, aged 8 mo., 15 da.

July 6, 1853 Wednesday

  • Married - In Thurston on the 3rd inst. by Rev. T. Benedict, Mr. Henry La Fayette Lemm of Bath to Miss Sarah Jane Wilbur of Thurston.
  • Died - In Hyde Park, PA on June 20th, Miss Mary B. Pier; 30 yrs.

July 13, 1853 Wednesday

  • Brutal murder - Barnet Simerson of Bluffport, T. of Pulteney, attacked his wife with a billet of wood, then took an axe and severed her head from her body. A daughter and daughter-in-law were present. He is about 55 yrs. old and a native of Sussex Co., NJ, having resided in Pulteney for the last 35 yrs. His wife was about 48 yrs.
  • Married - In Elmira on July 3rd by Rev. C. N. Chandler, Mr. Seely Bishop to Miss Emily Mitchell, both of Bradford.
  • Died - In Auburn on the 2nd inst., Miss Clarrissa Cook, in the 81st yr. of her age; she was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Auburn.

July 20, 1853

  • Returned - From CA, the "land of Gold," young C. L. Hawley, Esq., son of William M. Hawley, Hornellsville, in good health and spirits and with a goodly share of the "rocks."
  • Married - In Kanona on July 13th by Rev. Mr. Nutter, Mr. E. K. Potter to Miss Orrilla Sears.
  • Died - In Bath, Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Abner P. Lyon of Prattsburgh, in the 21st year of her age.
  • Died - In Prattsburgh on the 30th ult., Theodore Clement, youngest child of Prof. S. B. and Ann Eliza Cole, aged 1 yr., 6 mo.

July 27, 1853 Wednesday

  • Escape - Four prisoners of the Steuben Co. jail escaped Sat. last, and three are still at large. As described by the Sheriff, they are: Palmer Robaleyer, 5'8", spare face, slim built, brown hair, down-cast look, about 22 yrs. of age, had on dark clothes, Kossuth hat; Web. Coovert, about same height, stouter built, dark hair, gray eyes, 2 or 3 front teeth out; John Lane, about the same height, rather light complexion, about 30 yrs. old, had on a red vest. There is a reward of $200 for the return of Robaleyer and Coovert (or $100 for either) and $25 for Lane.
  • Died - In Thurston on July 17th, Mrs. Jerusha, wife of George W. Gustin, and daughter of Daniel and Lovina Fowler of Cohocton, aged 42 yrs. She endured long months of a lingering disease and leaves her husband and 6 children.
  • Died - In Bath, Samuel S. Seeley, infant son of Alaxander and Martha T. Hess, on the 23rd inst.
  • Died - In Bath on the 13th inst., William Coss, in the 69th yr. of his age; he was one of the early settlers of the county.

August 3, 1853 Wednesday

  • Married - In the Parsonage of Bath on the 28th ult. by Rev. N. Fellows, Rev. Hiram Bacon of Bradford and Mrs. Mariat Stamp of Bath.
  • Married - On the 2nd inst. by Rev. David Nutten, Mr. Henry Steller of Rochester to Miss Mary F. Van Pelt of Bath.
  • Died - In Avoca on July 23rd, Mary Jane, youngest daughter of William and Phebe Allen, wife of Christopher Meeks, in the 23rd yr. of her age, after an illness of 2 mos.; she was Married less than a yr. since and leaves a lovely babe.

  • Married - In Hornellsville on the 25th ult. by Rev. John H. Day, Mr. James Taylor to Miss Antoinette Putnam, both of Greenwood.
  • Married - In Canisteo on the 2nd inst. by Rev. H. Pittengill, Mr. Frank Lewis, Merchant of Angelica, to Miss Mary E. Mulhollen of Canisteo.
  • Married - At the parsonage on the 3rd inst. by Rev. A. S. Baker, Mr. Nathan Whitford to Miss Lulalia Robinson, both of S. Dansville.

  • Died - At his residence in the Town of Independence, Oakland Co., MI, on the 2nd inst., of consumption, John Rosenkrans, aged 58 yr., 4 mo., 14 da.
  • Died - In Bath on the 7th inst., Andrew E. Hodge, son of Jacob E. and Nancy Hodge, aged 14 yr., 8 mo., 18 da.
  • Died - On the 20th inst., Ellen Hodge, third daughter of J. E. and Nancy Hodge, aged 17 yr., 6 da.

  • Died - On Aug. 19th, Francis G. Wisner, aged 21 yrs., son of R. P. Wisner, Esq.; his mother Died "some 3 yrs. since." (from Mt. Morris Union)

  • Died - Oliver D. Buzzell, at the residence of his father, Elder S. D. Buzzell, near Bath, July 15th; aged 19 yrs.
  • Married - In Wheeler on the 8th inst. by Rev. S. M. Day, Mr. Milton Thompson to Miss Catharine A. Hankinson, both of Wheeler.

  • Died - At the residence of his brother in Jasper on Mar. 9th, William S. Mulhollon, Esq., late of Bath, aged 78 yrs.; from PA in 1800; settled in the Town of Painted Post; active Justice of the Peace for over 20 yrs.; afterwards moved to Bath and was Justice of the Peace for 15 yrs.
