PREFACE In the years covered by this transcript, the Steuben Farmer's Advocate was edited by A. J. Mc Call and billed itself as the "official paper of the county." There are also a few items from surrounding counties, including Yates, Chemung and Schuyler. Unless indicated, all locations mentioned are in Steuben Co., or, if only a county is given, New York State. Current two-letter postal abbreviations are used for states. An attempt was made to extract not only the marriage and death notices that were usually printed every week, but also any other items of genealogical interest, most often found on the editorial page. Where there were no marriage or death notices or other items of interest for a week, it is so noted. Where copies of the newspaper were actually missing, it is also noted. Microfilm from the Cornell University Library was used for the extraction. For the most part, no papers were missing except for two rather large sections, between March 29, 1854 and April 11, 1855 and between March 26, 1856 and May 13, 1857 (except for Oct. 8, 1856.) The spelling of the names and places are as they appeared in the newspaper. Also in the index, which is separate, there is no attempt to reconcile various spellings of a particular surname In an article entitled "Our Churches" in March of 1858, some statistics were given regarding the churches in Bath at that time. Any reference to "present" or "now" in the following relates to the year 1858. "The Presbyterian Society was the first to establish regular religious services in 1808, with fourteen members. A building was erected in 1824, with seats for 500, the number of present members being 100. Rev. George D. Stewart is the pastor." "The Methodist Church was also built in 1824, with seats for 400. Presently there are about 80 members, and the Rev. N. N. Beers is pastor. The presiding Elder, Mr. Mc Kinstry, is also a resident of Bath." "The Episcopal Church was organized in 1826, with four members. the building was erected in 1834, with seats for 300, the number of members then being about 20. Sunday services were alternated with Hammondsport until 1840, when full Sunday services began. Presently this congregation is planning on building a new church, at a cost of $10,000, on the ground west of the Land Office. The number of members currently is 130, with Rev. O. R. Howard as pastor." "The New School Presbyterian Church was built in 1841 and seats 250. About 20 members began the church, but current numbers are not known. Rev. Mr. Johnson is the pastor." "The Baptist Church was built in 1843, with seats for 300. The number of members currently is about 100, most of whom live at a distance of from one to five miles from church. The Rev. E. C. Brown is pastor." In the following transcription of items of interest to family researchers, the abbreviation "inst." means the same month and "ult." means the previous month.
