- NOTES: Subject index. Annotated card file. Ogden Hoffman (1793-1856) was a Goshen and New York City attorney who also held various public offices. Ambrose S. Murray (1807-1885) was a Goshen banker, railroad investor and Congressional representative. Samuel S. Seward (1768-1849) was a physician, judge, and financier; his son William Henry Seward was Secretary of State under President Lincoln. William Wickham (1732-1814) was a Goshen and New York City attorney; his son George D. Wickham (1772-1845) was a Goshen banker. James W. Wilkin (1762-1845) was a Goshen attorney and office holder. Henry G. Wisner (1777-1842) was a Goshen attorney.
- ABSTRACT: Letters, bills, receipts, agreements, memoranda, deeds, bonds, promissory notes, wills and estate papers, legal papers, maps, land surveys, minutes, account books, diaries, and other miscellaneous papers primarily generated by Ogden Hoffman, Ambrose S. Murray, Samuel S. Seward, William Henry Seward, the Smith family, William Wickham, George D. Wickham, James W. Wilkin, and Henry G. Wisner. Subjects of these personal papers include legal affairs, family and personal life, railroads, education, local government, business affairs, land transactions, western lands and settlement, and political matters such as campaigns, elections, the Albany Regency, slavery, legislative business, and appointments. Other notable segments include account books, receipts, maps, surveys, minutes, letters, and legal papers concerning the Drowned Lands, 1807-1850; transcript of the divorce trial of Martha Ellis vs. Levi Ellis, 1837; maps, deeds, agreements, accounts, letters, and legal papers concerning military bounty lands in Orange County, 1791-1838; and Civil War letters and military documents of Alfred Neafie, 1864-1865.
- ABSTRACT: Also, correspondence, financial records, and legal papers of William Thompson, 1758-1833, concerning legal cases and lands in the Minisink Patent; indentures, deeds, surveys and maps, agreements, and other papers concerning the Wawayanda Patent, 1703-1795, including the original Indian deed, 1703; diary and letters of John Wood, 1779-1783, concerning his experiences as a British prisoner of war after the Battle of Minisink; and a legal brief prepared by Alexander Hamilton on the Cheesecocke-Wawayanda land dispute and a letter regarding his fee, 1785-1786. Other subjects include Antimasonic Party, banking, churches, Civil War, common schools, Farmers Hall Academy, genealogy, land patents, lumbering, military affairs, border dispute between New Jersey and New York, Orange County Bible Society, Revolutionary War, slaves and servants, and turnpike companies.
