- HISTORICAL NOTE: This is a collection of family papers and land records assembled from single accessions relating to eight Livingston family members named Henry, descended from Robert Livingston (1654-1728) of Scotland, the first Lord of the Manor, Manor Livingston, Dutchess and Putnam Counties, New York. The Henry Livingstons are Henry Livingston, Sr. (1714-1794) a Dutchess County, New York clerk; Henry Livingston, Jr. (1748-1828) a Major in the Third New York Regiment during the Revolution and later a surveyor in Dutchess County, New York; Henry Beekman Livingston (1750-1831) of Rhinebeck, a Captain and later Colonel of the Fourth New York Regiment; Henry Livingston (1752-1823) a Lieutenant Colonel of the Manor Livingston Regiment; Henry Gilbert Livingston (1754-1817) a Captain in the First Battallion of the New York Independents; Henry Brockholst Livingston (1757-1823) a Major of the Third New York Regiment and a justice of the Supreme Court; Henry Alexander Livingston (1776-1849); and Henry Wells Livingston (1778-?) a Utica, New York lawyer.
- ABSTRACT: This is a collection of family papers and land records assembled from single accessions relating to eight Livingston family members named Henry. The materials, arranged by family members, consists primarily of correspondence, documents, field books, and survey maps with the primary topics being land titles and the Revolutionarly War. Included among these are muster rolls of the Fourth New York Regiment under Col. James Holmes for February 13, 1776, an orderly book of the Third New York Regiment, 1780. Also included are five survey maps by Henry Livingston, Jr., surveyor in Dutchess County, of properties for Maria Jane Anne Whiley and others in Clinton, New York, 1787-1811; property deeded to Beverly Robinson near the Oblong, 1758 and a copy of a David Lambert 1769 survey of Lot No. 2, 1st Division of Philipse Manor for Capt. Frederick Philipse, 1802. As well as two deed maps by Isaac Davis and William Cockburn of land deeded by Henry Beekman Livingston to Everardus Bogargdus and to Hans Kierstead, both in Rhinebeck, 1787.

Many members of these families resided in New York State, particularly at Argyle and Fort Edward in Washington County, at Glens Falls and Luzerne in Warren County, and in Delaware County. Members of the Gilchrist and Gillis families migrated from Scotland to Argyle, Washington County, New York.

Correspondence, 1834-1961, includes business letters to Brush, 1836-ca.1872, concerning supply of malts, whiskey, and grains, financial arrangement, Whig politics and difficulties stemming from Brush's occupation, planks and fencing for the railroad, buying cattle, legal cases, testimonials to Brush's mineral spring water, and land transactions; family letters from his wife and daughter Emma; letters from Luther Bradish, his guardian, concerning property and financial matters, politics, the merits of daughters and sons, and social life in Saratoga Springs, 1834-1842; and a letter from Susan A. Brush concerning these papers, 1961. Financial records include accounts, receipts, orders, and a bank book for 1834-1835. Legal papers include deeds, mortgages, estate papers, contracts, and farm tenant agreements, 1829-1925. Some longer articles and pamphlets can be found, along with a few pictures, letters, and other manuscripts (sometimes photocopies of original material). Most of these files are small in size, containing only a few sheets of information. Over 1,900 surnames are represented in the collection, but only small portions of them contain genealogical information contributed by researchers and others.
- ABSTRACT: Families for which there is a reasonable quantity of genealogical material in the files include Austin, Brown, Buell, De Long, Durkee, Ferriss, Finch, Fuller, Gansevoort, Gilchrist, Goodman, Goodspeed, Haskins, Holden, Jenks, Mead, Morgan, Mosher, Patterson, Peck, Pruyn, Robards, Russell, Smith, Swick, Thomson, West, Wing, and Wray families. Much of the genealogical material in the Biographical Files was prepared by Alexander W. Miller and Marion Chitty. Additional material has been provided by various family historians and genealogists who contribute their findings to the library.
- ABSTRACT: Individuals for which one can find an ample amount of biographical information include: Eugene Lionel Ashley, Loren Blackburn, Charles Reed Bishop, Robert Cochran, Addison Colvin, Henry Crandall, Douglass Crockwell, Melvil Dewey, Jeanne Robert Foster, Jane McCrea, William McEchron, Broncho Charlie Miller, Robert Porter Patterson, Charles Adams Platt, David Smith, Gerald Brooks Hunt Solomon, Seneca Ray Stoddard, and Stanford White. Some of the biographical material in these files was contributed by Sherman Williams.
