- SUMMARY: The Fairchild Collection consists primarily of papers of citizens, and records of public and private institutions in Cazenovia, Madison County, New York, dating chiefly from the late eighteenth through the late nineteenth centuries. Included are: correspondence; accounts; legal documents; military records; land papers; school records; clippings and printed material; town meeting minutes; meeting notices; a manuscript copy of an 1803 census; and an 1812 assessment list. These, fragmentarily, document the lives of members of the Burr, Card, Cazenove, Fairchild, Forman, Lincklaen, Ledyard, Smith, and Stebbins families, all of whom either lived in or had some relation to Cazenovia. There are more substantial groups of papers for John Lincklaen, founder of the town, Holland Land Company agent, and first president of the Third Great Western Turnpike Road Company; his adoptive son and successor at the above offices, Jonathan D. Ledyard; Ledyard Lincklaen, Jonathan D. Ledyard's son; and Samuel S. Forman, merchant, Cazenovia Postmaster, and early Cazenovia settler.
- SUMMARY: Of note are: a Masonic certificate issued to John Lincklaen at Marseilles, 1788, and one issued to his father, Anthony Quirin Lincklaen, Amsterdam, 1757; John Lincklaen's journals describing his travels through New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, 1791-1792, as an agent of the Holland Land Company; Samuel S. Forman's speech, "Cazenovia," delivered May 8, 1841, describing the founding of the town; letters of reformer Gerrit Smith, most of which are addressed to Ledyard Lincklaen; letters and notebooks, 1817-1819, of Lambertus Wolters, a Dutch nephew of John Lincklaen who was attending a school at Hyde Park, N.Y., run by Benjamin Allen, and Allen's letters reporting on the boy's progress; Samuel S. Forman's correspondence and accounts, 1789-1793, documenting his years of travel and trade at Natchez, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and Louisville; and invitations to state events received by Charles Stebbins Fairchild while he served as United States Treasury Secretary, 1887-1889. Correspondents include: Paul Busti, Perry G. Childs, Adam G. Mappa, Levi Parsons, Philip Schuyler, Peter Smith, Baron Steuben, John Jacob Van der Kemp, and John Wheelock.
- SUMMARY: Also documented are such institutions as the Holland Land Company, the Cazenovia and Chittenango Turnpike Road Company (also known as the Cazenovia and Chittenango Plank Road Company), the Third Great Western Turnpike Road Company (whose road was also known as the Cherry Valley Turnpike), a cotton and woolen "manufactory" operated by John Lincklaen in Cazenovia, 1809-1817; the local militia; the Cazenovia Post Office; and such topics as: elections and other political (particularly Whig Party) affairs; stage and mail coaches; liquor licensing; banks; schools; clubs; and associations. A small group of Madison County records, 1808-1868, chiefly of a political and judicial nature, are also included.
