He was a chemist who, along with his brother Alfred, founded the Solvay Co. They later started a plant here along Milton Avenue.
He came here from PA and began manufacturing salt. He was also a surveyor, engineer, and later was elected as a Judge, Congressman, and State Legislator.
He was a farmer who donated the land that Boyd Avenue School was built on.
