Notes paraphrased from an article in the Ithaca Journal, 28 Mar 2002:
The seven people buried here were residents of the Town Poor House & Farm that was established in 1873.  As part of the celebration of Hector's 200th birthday in 2002, a sign was erected along Mott Evans Rd., just NE of Reynoldsville.  Ben Dickens (Town Supervisor) and Jane Ike (Town Clerk) officiated at the ceremony. Burdett resident Per Navestad carved the redwood sign that marks the location of the cemetery.  The current owners of the land, the Sierigks of Acorn Designs, gave permission for the sign and also planted flowers when the cemetery was discovered. The cemetery is on a tree-lined hillside on the north side of the Mott Evans road. The new sign is visible from the road. The Town Farm was intended to provide "good food, good air and good healthful exercise" for farm residents. In October 1896 it was reported that the seven acres being worked produced 400 bushels of oats, 15 acres of hay "a good crop of potatoes," pasture for four cows and "a remarkable apple crop" of trees covering 2 1/2 acres. The men and women housed at the facility in 1895 cost the town 75 cents each a week to support, but the number of residents is not known. The number of residents in 1896 was down to five men and four women. Rising costs of operation ultimately caused those towns with poor houses to shut them down and look for new ways to care for their needy.
