Seabury Toles Knew Lincoln as Guardsman
Local Veteran was One of Three Remaining Survivors of Civil Conflict

Seabury Toles, 91, who was one of three living Civil War veterans of Cobleskill, died at the home of his son, Floyd Toles of east Main Street, Sunday after an illness of six months. Mr. Toles suffered a slight shock and later developed Pneumonia.

Mr. Toles was a member of the former GAR Post at Jefferson and also a member of the 891st regiment of New York Volunteer Infantry, in which he enlisted in September 1863 at Albany.

He was honorably discharged from service in June 1865 at Baltimore, Maryland. The many friends of Mr. Toles will remember him for his telling of interesting experiences with Abraham Lincoln, whom he personally met and was once a member of Lincoln's guard force.

Mr. Toles was born in Otego, New York, January 8, 1844 and was a son of Aura and Polly Smith Toles. His wife, Marietta Payne, died in 1918.

Those surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Melissa Thompson of Syracuse, Mrs. Eva Dana, Oneonta and Mrs. Almond Moore of Cobleskill; a son Floyd Toles of Cobleskill; two brothers, Melvin of Charlotteville and Jerome Toles of Elmira; several grand children and two great grandchildren.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Bundy's funeral parlors with Rev. Frederick W. Allen, pastor of Cobleskill Baptist church officiating. Burial was at Charlotteville.
