NATURALIZATION INFORMATION FOR TIMOTHY DELANEY

To the honorable Lyman Sanford
County Judge of Schoharie County Court.

THE PETITION OF Timothy DeLaney of the town of Cobleskill, in the County of Schoharie, respectfully sheweth that your petitioner was born a subject of Victoria, Queen of Great Britian and Ireland. That he came to reside in the United States of America in the month of June in the year 1846, and has ever since continued to reside within the same; that your petitioner is now of the age of thirty three years, and that when he first came to reside within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States, he was within the age of twenty years; that for the last thirteen years next preceding the presentation of this petition, it has been his bona fide intention to become a citizen; that he has resided for the last five years immediately preceding the date of this petition, in Cobleskill, Schoharie Co., N.Y.

And your petitioner therefore humbly prays that he may therefore be NATURALIZED, and become a citizen, as aforesaid.

Citizens of the United States, being sworn, severally depose and say that they are well acquainted with Timothy DeLaney, an alien, who signed the foregoing petition, that the said alien has resided in the United States for upwards of five years, and in this State one year immediately preceding the date of said petiton, to wit: Cobleskill, Schoharie Co., N.Y. and that during that time, the said alien has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same.

I, Timothy DeLaney of Cobleskill in said county, do solemnly swear and declare that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and that I do absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure any title or order of nobility, which I may have, and also all allegiance and fidelity to any and every foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatsoever, and particularly Victoria of which I was before a subject.

At a County Court held in and for the county of Schoharie, at the Court House in the town of Schoharie, on the twentieth day of September 1859.

Timothy DeLaney an alien born in Kingdom of Great Britian presented his petition to the said Court, praying that he might become a citizen of the United States of America, and it appearing to the said Court by the oaths of Jeremiah Fox and Charles Homes , citizens of the United States, that the said alien has resided for the last five years within the United States, and for the last year within this State, to wit; Cobleskill, N.Y.

And the said Timothy DeLaney having in all other respects complied with the requirements of the several acts of Congress, under which he sought to be naturalized, the said Court did admit that said Timothy DeLaney in consideration of the premises and the laws in such case provided, to become A NATURAL CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and entitled to all the privileges and immunities of such citizen; and have caused this record of the proceedings to be made and filed, pursuant to the several acts of Congress.

"The following papers are on file at the County Clerk’s office Schoharie, N. Y. They are our only record as to when and whence the family came to this country. The papers were not taken out until Henry Maham was 88 years old and his son, William, 51. This was obviously done in preparation for the settlement of Henry Maham’s estate."

The petition of Henry Maham & William Maham of the town of Blenheim in the County of Schoharie aliens respectfully showeth that your petitioners were born subjects of Great Britain. That your petitioners came to reside in the United States of America in the year of our Lord 1792 and have ever since continued to reside within the same. That your petitioners are desirous of becoming naturalized as citizens of the United States and that they have resided as citizens of the United States and that they have resided for more than forty years within the state of New York and your petitioners as in duty bound will every pray –

Depose and say that they are well acquainted with Henry Maham & William Maham aliens who signed the foregoing petitions and affidavit that the said Henry Maham & William Maham have resided within the state of New York upwards of 35 years immediately preceding the date of said petition and that during said time they have behaved as men of good moral character attached to the principles of the constitution of the United States and well disposed to the order and happiness of the same.

At a Court of Common Pleas of General Sessions of the Peace held in & for the County of Schoharie on the Third day of February 1840 before John C. Wright First Judge Robert Cloredge, John Westover & Harvey Watson, Judges of said Court.

Henry Maham and William Maham, aliens, born in the kingdom of Great Britain, presented their petition setting forth that they have resided in the United States since the year 1792 & that they have continued to reside within the same ever since & that they were desirous of becoming citizens of the United States & naturalized according to the act of Congress & stating that they have resided in the state for more than forty years immediately preceding the presentation of their said petition, it being satisfactorily proved to this court that henry Maham and William Maham have resided in the United States since the year 1792 & it being from them satisfactorily proved to this court by the oaths of Valentine Efner & Marvin Judd Citizens of the United States that the said Henry Maham & William Maham did reside within the state of new York for more than 35 years immediately preceding the presentation of their said petition & during said time have behaved as men of good moral character attached to the principles of Constitution of the United States & well disposed to the good order & happiness of the same & they have taken & subscribed in open court the oath to support the constitution of the United States & that they absolutely and entirely renounced and abjured all allegiance of fidelity to any foreign prince, state or sovereignty Whatsoever & particularly the government of Great Britain—

In consideration whereof the said Court do hereby admit the said Henry Maham & William Maham to become naturalized citizens entitle to all the privileges & immunities as such citizens & have caused this record of the proceedings to be made & filed according to the act of Congress.
