Martin Luther Wolford

     Martin Luther Wolford, born March 12, 1843 in Berne, son of William and Caroline (Engel) Wolford, passed away at his home in Breakabeen Saturday night, June 27, at 11 o'clock of stomach trouble and the infirmities of his advanced age.
     When he became of age, Mr. Wolford chose the miller's and sawyer's trade, and operated a mill (now extinct) for many years where Harold Scutt now resides near Livingstonville. From there he moved to Oak Hill, running the Dean mills until 33 years ago when he purchased the mills in Breakabeen where he carried on his occupation as long as his health permitted. His son, Everett, now conducts the same business.
     Mr. Wolford has long been the pride of relatives and friends who have enjoyed "tales of the olden times," so well told by him, and it was hoped that he might continue in good health and mental ability until the century mark was reached. Surely one can learn much from a person who has lived in this old world and marked its changes, to become a non-agenarian and the passing of these old people is regretted.
     Mr. Wolford was a devout Christian, a kind father and a good neighbor; never has the writer known him to be angry even in discussing politics, religious creeds or local topics. He has made a home for children, grandchildren and many a "stranger within his gates" has been made welcome.
     For more than sixty years he enjoyed married life with a sweet, kind, helpmate, Christina (West) Wolford, who passed on to her reward in 1918. To this union were born six children Mrs. Lorenzo Van Tassel of Pine Grove, Mrs. Zoa Benjamin and Everett Wolford of Breakabeen, and Seneca Wolford of Middleburgh who survive him, and Frank Wolford and Edna (Wolford) Brackett, deceased; eight grandchildren, several great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren (fifth generation), children of Virginia (Brickner) Hulfish. Several nephews and nieces also survive him and a host of friends.
     His funeral was held Tuesday, June 30, at 2 P. M., in the Presbyterian Church of which he was a member and faithful attendant. The Rev. W. B. Frith officiated. Beautiful hymns were touchingly sung and lovely floral pieces bore their silent tributes.
     Interment was in the family plot of the local cemetery, beside his departed loved ones.

Rest noble spirit; life's race has been run,
The hardships are over and the goal is now won.
For nearly a century with life you were blessed,
But now God has called you from the home nest,
Fond memories we'll hold of your kind loving face,
And pray God to meet "Up Yonder," thru strength of His grace.
