(The Middleburgh Gazette)
Yielding to an incurable malady after
months of affliction, Charles Mann entered into rest on Monday at his home in
this village at the age of 71.
Born at Boucks' Falls in the town of Fulton, he resided
there and at Breakabeen, following the vocation of farming until twenty years
ago he removed to Middleburgh and has since taken an active part in affairs,
always manifesting a willingness to aid every worthy cause by word and deed.
While a resident of Fulton, he served for many years as
assessor, gaining an insight into farm and other real estate values which led to
his employment by Attorney W. H. Grogan, representing the city of New York in
the cases involving real estate values in the Gilboa territory taken over by the
great reservoir at Gilboa.
Mr. Mann was a life long member of the Lutheran church,
both at Breakabeen and Middleburgh, a member of the Council, a Deacon and a
Sunday School worker. At one time he was president of the Town Association and
later that of the county organization. He was also for years a member of
Middleburgh Lodge 663, F. & A. M., and has served as an officer.
In politics, Mr. Mann was a Democrat who believed in
honesty and economy and practiced it as assessor and overseer of the poor of
this town. At the last election he was endorsed for the latter office by the
Republican party which indicated the acceptability of his services. He had the
will to serve and threw into any cause he espoused enthusiasm and zeal.
Surviving are his wife, who with him made a
never-to-be-forgotten trip to the Holy Land a few years ago, and his children,
Mrs. Edw. P. Moore of Oneonta, Willard H. Mann of Breakabeen, Howard Mann of New
