Entrance, July 2, 2002

About 20 years ago I was able to view a copy of the original map of the Charlotteville Town Cemetery on Baptist Church Road just outside the town of Charlotteville. My cousin Ralph Johns was a trustee of the Cemetery for a number of years prior to his death. At the time the only record was being kept on a piece of oil cloth which was very old and in poor condition. I was able to make a velum copy of the Old Section of the Cemetery which contains over 204 graves. I have copied the names from that original, without dates. My grandparents the Lincolns are buried in the Cemetery ,and lived in the area beginning in 1795. My mother was born on the farm outside the town. Recent burials are in the newer section of the Cemetery and I do not have that information, although some of the Lincoln family is buried in that section. Other family names or relatives of ours, include Hix, Stilwell, and Cleveland. Our family the Lincolns. Franklyn Ingram

Tombstone Readings
Addition to the large cemetery on Baptist Church Road. In addition to the older section shown in the Apr. 21, 1999 listing, there is a southern section and a new section. The southern section (S) is about 4 lots wide and is the same depth as the older main section (M). It borders on the driveway marked 1st gate and the Baptist Church road. The higher numbers appear to be near the Baptist Church Road. The newer section (N) is reached by driving between the old main section and the southern (S) section then beside the lots the farthest from the road. The newer section then extends in a southerly and easterly direction. The information in this listing was obtained by my mother Helen Bruce after many visits. Where available lot numbers are indicated before the name. Additional family information is indicated in brackets. Where only a burial date is known, it is listed with a less than (<) sign for ease in checking newspaper obituaries. Hopefully the copying and transcription are reasonably accurate up to 1977. Finally back to working on the Charlotteville Cemetery.
There are some new areas.  I decided to divide the new area east of the driveway into
sections Nb and Nc, with the Nb area being next to the driveway and the Nc area being
further to the east.
Along the Baptist Church Road, another row has been added alongside the main section,
which I am labelling WALL.
There is another area west of the older main area, the entire depth of the cemetery which
I am labelling WEST.

Notes
Note 1:
I wanted to let you know that my great-grandmother Cora (Jeffers) Graham and my Great-Great-Grandmother
Sarah M. (Wayman) Graham are buried in the Graham Plot.

Cora (Jeffers) Graham Born: Feb.18, 1871 Died: November 22, 1909
                            Wife of Jerry Graham

Sarah M. (Wayman) Graham Born: April 1845 Died: April 14, 1912
                               Wife of George Graham.

Judy Knapp July 12, 2004

Note 2:

My wife and I spent some time in the cemetery yesterday. She is a direct Lamont/Chickering descendent. We took many pictures of Lamont and Chickering stones.

I was able to decipher two stones which I am not sure are listed on your great site. Both are near the William Lamont, Jr., their father.

Immediately to the father's left (facing the stones) is Catherine Lamont, died Oct. 21, 1851 at age 42 years, 1 month and 24 days. ( Until I get the print developed, I am not sure whether the stone mentions that she is the wife of James S. Wood, but I feel certain it did as we used spouse names to verify identity.)

To her left is her sister, Jane Lamont, died May 24, 1848 at age 24 years, 6 months, [ ]4 days. (She is the wife of Charles F. Near which I think is stated on that stone. This stone is very difficult to read and was face down on the ground.  Upon flipping it over, I was able to read the information by sprinkling dark, damp dirt into the letters.)

Thanks for maintaining the Charlotteville Cemetery site.

Note 3

I don't know what happened but I think Julia's date of birth is incorrect.  I have Julia in the 1880's Jefferson Census, page 182C as being born about 1861.  I am pretty sure that this is the same Julia Clapper married to Edward Wayman.  It lists Julia's mother as Harriet in the same census, otherwise I would think that this is not "my" Julia.

You list:
Pickett, Hannah d. Apr. 28, 1859 at 78, w. of Nathan
Pickett, Nathan d. Dec. 24, 1874 at 75.

Hannah's age at death is probably roughly accurate, but Nathan's isn't. He was on the 1850 census as age 71, on the 1860 census as age 81, and on the 1870 census as 91.

In addition, according to his death notice on the Otsego County NYGenWeb site, Nathan died Dec. 21, 1873, at age 94 years, 8 months:

 Note 5

Are there any dates for stone #56, Schubel Smith in the old Charlotteville Town Cemetery?

Is there still a stone there?

George Lamont Stillwell is listed with Schubel Smith. Is George the owner of the plot or is he interred also?

My wifes ggggrandfather spelled his name Shubael Smith, 1775-1862, but his daughter Elizabeth Smith Kellogg named her son Schubel Kellogg. We dont know Shubael Smiths father or mother, sisters or brothers because the family supposedly was taken by Indians from Wyoming Valley on the Susquehanna River, PA then to Canada when Genls Clinton and Sullivan pushed the Indians out. Shubael came back to the States in 1795 and settled in Palmyra, NY but left no burial site. His Palmyra wife was Nancy Anne Culver Smith from Long Island, NY who doesnt have a burial site in Palmyra either. I noticed sites 52, 53, 54 have no names by them. Could one of them be Anne Culver Smith? Shubael was good friends with a Peter Mitchell (site #33?) named executor of Shubaels will, but Shubaels friend Peter Mitchell died before him.

Thanks for any information, Dave and Barb Smith Gill, October 28, 2007
