NICHOLAS G. VEEDER, EX-REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER
Nicholas G. Veeder, born during the French and Indian wars, was three months more than 100 years old when he died in 1862 during the Civil War. In between he squeezed in a little fighting on his own during the Revolution.
Following the Revolution, he converted his home, on what is now Scotia's Halcyon Street, into a museum and miniature armory by collecting war relics. The house became known as the "Old Fort."
During the first half of the century people flocked to the stone and wooden house, reputedly built in 1745, to view the rusty cannons, blunderbusses, and swords.
Mr.Veeder, who lived to be the last surviving local hero of the Revolution became, a legendary figure. He had a prominent place in Fourth of July processions and held visitors to the fort spellbound with his tales.
