WILLIAM H. SHIRLAND was born in Troy, N. Y. He was the son of a stove- and iron-manufacturer of that place. His ancestors came from England, and very early settled in the United States. The rudiments of his education he received in the common schools, the Santa Clara College, Cal., and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N. Y. He commenced the study of law with Gen. O. H. LaGrange, at San Francisco, Cal., and continued his studies with Hon. Martin I. Townsend, at Troy, N.Y. He was admitted to practice as an attorney and counselor in 1874, and is still practicing his profession in Troy.
