Ravenswood, Queens County, New York

Ravenswood, a village in the Town of Newtown, is located upon the East River.  It is a suburban village and the houses consist mostly of costly residents.  The poorhouse farms of New York City were located at this place previous to purchase of the islands in the river for that purpose.  A rifle cartridge factory exploded here about 1850, occasioning a great destruction of life.
Excerpts from Gazetteer of the State of New York, by J.H. French, 1860
