Generation No. 1
1. JOHN1 STURGIS was born Abt.
16241, and died 17001. He married DEBORAH BARLOW, daughter of JOHN
BARLOW and ANN.
Notes for
JOHN STURGIS:
It is believed that John could
have come to Plymouth County, MA, from England possibly by way of Barbadas
with his parents when he was a boy and left for Fairfield, CT, as a young
man. It is recorded that he was in Fairfield in 1660. His descendants
later immigarated to New York State and Michigan.
Information on John Sturgis
and his immediate descendants is based on research done by Mrs. Emily P.
Thies whose address was Box 488, Amherst, Massachusetts 01002, in
1971. At that time, she was corresponding regularily with Gordon
Sturge in Hannibal, NY, concerning Sturge genealogy. In her last
letter to Gordon Sturge dated November 29, 1971, she stated she planned
to sell her home and move to Santa Barbara, CA.
Other references are "Old
Families of Fairfield" by Donald Lines Jacobus and "Fairfield 1637-1818"
by Schenck. For the members of the Sturge family who later immigrated
to Cayuga County, NY, one resource would be the "History of Cayuga County"
published by Storke and Smith in 1879. Another source of Sturge genealogy
would be the rough notes left by Gordon Sturge who died before he had them
all formally organized. This computer file compiled by Lowell C.
Newvine attempts to accomplish that end.

Notes for
FRANK GILLIS STURGE:
Frank was born near Bethel
in the Town of Hannibal in a house later owned by Glenn Blodgett.
Frank was a farmer by profession. He was also once a brakeman on
the railroad for about two years but had to give it up because of motion
sickness.
Frank was initiated into the
Hannibal Masonic Lodge on November 17, 1880. He was elected Junior
Warden on December 24, 1881.
On April 1, 1882, the Oswego
Palladium printed this amusing account involving Frank and his brother,
Charlie:
"Last Saturday night a party
of boys made their resound with tin horns and various other noisy instruments
in the vicinity of the residence of Frank Sturge, about two miles south
of this village (Hannibal). It was considered to be a horning party
celebrating Frank's marriage. A neighbor Mr. George Miller, hearing
the noise went to Frank's residence to find out who were the horning party.
As he approached the house the noise ceased and not discovering the party
in front of the house he concluded they were at the back part of the house.
The night was very dark, and Miller, very cautious and still, passed from
the front to the back of the house, but instead of meeting the horning
party came in contact with a stick of stove wood which was hurled by Charlie
Sturge, a brother of Frank and struck Miller in the face knocking out five
or six of his teeth and prostrating him on the ground. Miller soon
recovered himself and made his way home with a bad looking face and concluded
that the looking after of horners on a dark night was a very unprofitable
job to one not interested."
Frand died after an illness
of several weeks at 12:30 AM Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1938, at his home in Hannibal.
Funeral services were at the home at 2 PM Friday Dec. 31, 1938. Rev.

Notes for
JENNIE WISE:
Jennie was the grand-daughter
of an English Earl. Her mother, Diana, was an English girl who married
a coachman. There were two children, Jennie and Joe Hewitt.
The father took to heavy drinking and the children were adopted, Jennie
by Mr. & Mrs. Peter A. Wise and Joe by another family.
Jennie was quite involved
with the Hannibal M.E. Church and served at various times as President
and Secretary of the Womens' Foreign Missionary Society. She was
also a talented singer.
The following obituary was
printed upon Jennie's death:
"Many friends will be sorry
to learn of the death of Mrs. Jennie Sturge, wife of Frank Sturge, which
occurred at their family home in Hannibal on Friday, April 4th, after a
long protracted sickness.
She endured her suffering
with patience and calmness. She was 48 years old. Jennie was
born in Oneida County, and was legally adopted into the Wise family when
she was only four years old.
In speaking of her, one of
the family said: It is almost impossible for us to tell when she
gave her heart to Christ, but, in her young and tender years, she was always
an earnest worker and never so happy as when in prayer-meeting. She
was always ready to give testimony for the Master. She has a sweet
lovely influence over her playmates, and when but a small child would gather
them around her and would have a prayer meeting.
She united with the church
when about twelve years of age (She actually was received into the Hannibal
M.E. Church on March 22, 1880, along with her adopted father by Rev. J.C.
Darling.). As she grew in years she grew in grace and was ever ready
to do her part. When but a child she would visit the sick and ask
if she could read to them out of the Bible.
She was a member of the Woman's
Foreign Missionary Society of the M.E. Church, and for many years gave
her best talents and faithful work.
Cheerful in disposition, pure
in thought, full of faith and hope; though gone she yet lives in the hearts
of her co-workers.
One of the heart-breaking
features of our society, knit together in the communion of a high and common
purpose is, that one by one we must drop form our roll call the precious
names of members whom God has called home. Our ranks are broken,
and while we lament the loss, we think of her as in the blessed activity
of the heavenly life.
She leaves a husband and adopted
son and many relatives and friends who will sympathize with him in his
affliction.
Funeral held on Friday at
2 p.m. from the M.E. Church, Rev. F. Maunder, officiating. Burial
at Bethel Cemetery."

Notes for
GORDON WHITNEY STURGE:
Gordon was adopted by Frank and
Jennie Sturge about the first of the year of 1901, when he was still an
infant. When Gordon was a child, the family resided in the Leonard
Earl house on Auburn Street. His childhood was spent growing up in
Hannibal. Gordon attended the Hannibal Village School and graduated
from high school in 1918. Shortly after his marriage to Dorris who
was a local teacher, he decided to pursue a teaching career himself and
attended Hannibal Teachers Training Class, graduating in June of 1925.
His first teaching job was in the rural schoolhouse of the Rhoades District
No. 14 in the Town of Hannibal.
Gordon and his wife continued
their education at Oswego Normal School and graduated in January 1928.
From February to June of that year, Gordon taught at the rural Ingalls
Crossing school in Volney, east of Fulton.
From September 1928 - June
1930, Gordon and Dorris took teaching jobs in a two-room schoolhouse in
Oswego Center. Gordon taught the upper room while Dorris taught the
lower room.
In 1930, he accepted a job
in the Village of Hannibal teaching sixth grade. He went on to teach
in the Hannibal High School until 1943.
He earned a B.S. degree in
Social Studies in 1934, and a M.S. degree in Education from Syracuse University
in January 1938. Gordon was a member of the faculty at Cato-Meridian
Central School from 1943 until his retirement in 1957. He taught
Social Studies and was Guidance Counselor.
He was a member of Nu Chapter,
Kappa Phi Kappa Educational Fraternity in Syracuse, was a member and former
President of the Oswego County Teachers Association and was a member of
the New York State Retired Teachers Association. He was also a past
President of the Hannibal Central School Alumni Association and in 1966,
received the Distinguished Service Award from this group.
Gordon was very active in
civic affairs. He served as Mayor of Hannibal in1949-51, and was
Town and Village Historian from 1949 until his death. Gordon served
as a Boy Scout Committeeman for ten years and was also a past President
of the Hannibal Sportsmen's Club.
Gordon's involvement as a
historian began in the 1930's when he decided to compile Hannibal history
as a basis for his Masters thesis from Syracuse University. He soon
realized that the subject was too comprehensive for this purpose and chose
to take the oral exam to earn his Masters Degree in 1938.
For the next eleven years,
he continued to research the history of Hannibal and in 1949, published
the well-known book, "Hannibal's Historical Highlights", which traced the
history of the town and village from the early years of settlement to present
day. The book was so well received by the community that Gordon was
named Town and Village Historian in 1949, and was honored at a special
testimonial dinner given by the Hannibal Civic Club on February 22, 1950.
When the Village of Hannibal
celebrated its one hundredth anniversary of incorporation in 1960, Gordon
was chosen Co-Chairman of the Hannibal Centennial Program Committee along
with Mayor Theodore C. Dann. Gordon was also Chairman of the Centennial
Book Committee which compiled a booklet in conjunction with that affair.
In addition, he organized a museum relating to Hannibal history in what
is now the Hannibal Quick Mart. At that time, Route 104 passed through
the Village and several out of town people as well as the local residents
viewed the exhibit.
As part of the centennial
celebration, a time capsule was buried in the center of the Village Square
during a ceremony on August 20, 1960. Gordon Sturge was also one
of the speakers for this occasion.
Gordon was a member of the
Hannibal Masonic Lodge, having joined in 1928. He published his second
book, "Past Masters of Hannibal Lodge, No. 550 F&AM", in 1960.
Although he was asked to be Master, he declined because he felt he did
not have the time to perform the duties of the position properly.
Nevertheless, in 1962, his fellow lodge members bestowed upon him the title
of Honorary Past Master.
Gordon was also a member and
once Vice-President of the Oswego County Historical Society. On November
19, 1963, he spoke before the group describing Hannibal's history.
Later that year, in the society's annual publication, he presented segments
of "Hannibal's Historical Highlights" as well as his research on the Bullen
family and their involvement in the Western Emigration Company.
Gordon was a member of the
Hannibal Methodist Church from his childhood days. As an adult, he
served as Church Historian and as a member of the Official Board.
When the church celebrated its centennial in 1964, Gordon compiled a booklet
and set up a museum in the sanctuary relating to the history of the church.
Always interested in local
history, he researched the history of the local fire department.
When the Hannibal Fire Department dedicated their new firehouse on Oswego
Street on March 7, 1964, Gordon was on of the featured speakers.
The stained glass windows
in the local churches caught his interest and he began to research the
history of their origin and the families for whom the windows had been
given in memory. He published his findings in 1965, in the booklet,
"Stained Glass Window History of Hannibal Churches".
Although local history was
his first love, he had other interests as well. During the 1930's,
he was often involved in amateur theatricals which were sponsored by the
Masons and other organizations. As a rule, he preferred playing comedy
roles. He also coached the Senior Class plays at the Hannibal High
School for several years.
Gordon enjoyed photography
and liked to travel when he could. He and Dorris visited California
four times, once in the company of their friends, Karl and Flossie Kellogg.
The Kelloggs also accompanied them on a trip to Mexico City. Gordon
wrote a detailed account of their travels which was printed in The Community
Newspapers of Red Creek .
Gordon had a green thumb and
always had a sizable garden. He took particular pleasure in supplying
his neighbors with the best vegetables.
Gordon died unexpectedly on
December 13, 1972, after suffering an apparent heart attack while driving
his car near Oswego. The Hannibal Masonic Lodge conducted a memorial
service on Friday evening, December 15, at the Jewell Funeral Home in Cato.
The following morning, funeral services were held in the Hannibal United
Methodist Church with Rev. Orval McBride officiating.
Gordon is remembered by residents
of the community and his friends as a man who was always interested in
people. But his greatest legacy is the compilation of the history
of Hannibal for future generations.

m. STEVEN K. CHAUGH.
Notes for
NANCY LILLIAN ROHLIN:
Nancy and Nadine are twins.
Nadine was born normal, but Nancy was born deaf. The family lived
at 418 Euclid Ave., Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY.
Ever since she was old enough
to play, Nancy was accepted completely by her playmates. When the
youngsters realized that Nancy couldn't hear, it was merely a matter of
touching her to get her attention.
One two-year old toddler soon
learned he could reach up and tug her skirt when he wanted her notice.
There was hardly a child around who failed to learn the sign language of
the deaf so they could teach Nancy their games - and mystify their parents.
All the children looked after
Nancy and kept her from possible danger. Someone was always appointed
to act as her ears to warn her of oncoming cars and etc.
One summer evening during
a game of hide'n seek, Nancy wandered off and couldn't be found at all.
All her friends and their parents were searching the neighborhood when
the police called to say she was at the police station.
A new neighbor, when asking
where she lived, was unable to understand her sign language and called
the police. She was only five years old, but when the police tried
to question her and failed, she wrote her name and address on a piece of
paper. It was a feat most of her playmates had yet to acquire.
Ability to read lips came
later, allowing her the pleasure of joining her friends at the neighborhood
movie theater. She also learned to appreciate music by feeling the
generated vibrations when she placed her hand on a played piano or phonograph.
She attended the Central New
York School for the Deaf in Rome, NY. Always a bright girl who learned
fast, Nancy was a member of the Literacy Society at the school serving
as President and Secretary. She excelled in sports and participated
in all athletics in school. During summer vacations, she did volunteer
work for the Red Cross and Community Chest.
Like Helen Keller, another victim of deafness, Nancy was taught to speak.
Therefore, when she graduated at the head of her class in June of 1960,
she was able to deliver a valedictory address at her graduation.
She spoke of the patience of her teachers, memories of happiness and of
disappointment and the sadness of leaving the place where she had spent
so many years.
