"The death of Owen Draper, which occurred at an early hour this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Shortself, 290 West Fifth Street (Oswego) occasions a feeling of profound sorrow among his many friends in this city and in the town of Hannibal where he passed the greater part of his life.
Mr. Draper was highly regarded by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance.  He was a kind and loving father and only those wh had an intimate knowledge of his character can testify of his worth.  His desire to be of assistance to others made him prominent among his neighbors and friends.  He was a charter member of the Golden Sheaf Grange.
Surviving are eight children, five daughters and three sons, Mrs. Harry Simmins (Simmons) and Mrs. George Richmond, Southwest Oswego; Mrs. Clarence Cole, Mrs. Walter Thorpe and Mrs. James Shortslef, this city; John Draper, Hannibal; Frank and Edwin Draper this city and several grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom are extended the sincere sympathy of friends in their bereavement."

The following eulogy was given by his long-time friend Arthur W. Wiltse:

I have known Owen Draper from my earliest recollection.  I doubt if anyone living knew him better or was on more intimate terms with him for so many years too.  From 1878 to 1880 and from 1890 to 1903 we were in almost daily contact and were always the best of riends.  During the past twenty-five years I have not seen him so often, yet it was always an enjoyable event when I could drive up to his door and and got a warm greeting from Owen Draper and his noble wife.  It was strife between them to see which could give a warmer welcome.  The short visit with them was always a bright spot in our lives.  Mr. Draper was a thrifty farmer.  He planted at the righ time and in the right place.  He cared for his growing crops and harvested it without waste.  To bring up and educate five daughters and three sons on the resources of a small stony farm is no small task, yet he was always courageous and cheerful and never complained.  Those sons and daughters were his pride and joy.  No father ever loved his children more, nor was any father ever more loyal to them.  Your father did not have the opportunities for education that you have had, yet he was in a sense an educated man - self-educated.  He had a natural ability and although he might not have been the firs to grasp a new idea, yet he thought it through and finally mastered it.  He and I became interested if fruit culture at the same time and many were the discussion we had after attending fruit growers meetings.  I think we were helpful to each other.  Owen Draper was one of the best neighbors that one could meet.  He rejoiced in the successes of his friends and was ever ready to help them out in time of trouble.  He had the greatest fund of good plain common sense of any man I ever met.  He was a good advisor.  When any question on education, schools or morals was to be decided, Owen Draper was on the right side, and no amount of persuasion could change him.  He was greatly interested in the Hannibal School.  When his children became of school age, he served on the Board of Education with credit to himself and always voted according to his honest convictions.  You have lost an agreeable acquaintance and a warm friend.  Hannibal has a good citizen and an honest man.  You well know that you have lost one of the kindest fathers and one whose advice and companionship you will sorely miss.  You should thank God you had him for so many years, and be thankful that he left such a clean record and was so highly respected by all.  Both father and mother are gone, but you have a memory of such a father and such a mother and that memory will, I think, be your greatest possession."

He was a farmer and lived on Mill Road in the Town of Hannibal at the time of his death.  He is buried in the Town of Oswego.

By the next generation there appears to have been a change in the spelling of the surname to "Shortslef".  According to Sterling Historian Hallie Sweeting, the family changed its name to Shortslef in 1917 or 1918.  To confuse the issue even further, the local phone directory currently lists both Shortsleeve and Shortslef individuals.
According to his son-in-law Spence Marcely, James Shortsleeve was "one of the most honest, upright and well-thought-of men I have known.  Loved to pitch horseshoes; seldom beaten."
His occupations included being a farmer, shademaker and inspector.  At one time time, he ran an ice cream stand in the City of Oswego believed to have been located at 103 W. Bridge Street.  The story goes that his daughter Catherine and her husband Burt purchased the ice cream stand so that James would have something not to strenuous to do after his first heart attack.
