Death of Hon. Amasa H. Jerome
Last Friday evening the town of Manlius
lost one of its oldest and most respected
citizens in the death of Amasa H. Jerome.
The deceased had for over a year been an
invalid, and for a long time was confined
to the house, but during the summer had
so far recovered as to be able to ride out in
his carriage. His disease was of a dropsi-
cal character. At the time of his death Mr.
Jerome held the positions of Justice of the
Peace and Assessor. From the Syracuse
Journal of Saturday we extract the follow-
ing relative to the deceased:
During his entire sickness, with the
efficient aid of his daughter, he continued
his business, and holding the positions of
Justice of the Pease and Assessor, the in-
terests of the town were not permitted to
suffer in his hands.
Having fitted for and been admitted to
the bar of Onondaga County at an early
age, Mr. Jerome entered upon the practice
of the law, in pursuit of which his course
was marked be a careful conscientiousness,
a trait that entered largely into his char-
acter. Various offices were conferred upon
him, in connection with his profession, the
first being that of one of the judges of the
Court of Common Pleas. In 1854 he was
elected to the position of Surrogate of the
county, which he filled for a term of four
years with dignity and ability, and honor
to himself and his constituency. For this
office Judge Jerome was particularly fitted,
his attention always having been largely
turned to the settlement of estates, and he
frequently being chosen executor. In the
town where his life was passed, he was re-
peatedly selected to fill various local offices,
the duties of which were carefully and
faithfully performed.
In politics Judge Jerome was an earnest
and unwavering Republican, often being a
prominent representative in its deliberative
conventions and elsewhere. For years he
has been an active member of the Trinity Pres-
byterian Church, at Manlius, and was a
warm friend to all religious and reformatory
work. Having received in youth a good
education, he continued throughout life a
student and possessed a broad inteliigence
that made him an interesting companion.
In temperament he was genial, and his in-
tercourse with others, both in public and
private, was of the pleasantest character.
His life covered the alloted period, three
score and ten, and closed peacefully in the
home of his youth, where his loss will be
mourned as a friend, Christian and citizen.
He leaves a widow and two children, a son
and daughter, the son, Charles T. Jerome,
being a resident of Minneapolis, Minn.
Another son, also a resident of Minnesota,
died a few years ago.
