*Casualties

Information, for those whose ancestors served in World War I but whose military records were destroyed in the NARA fire in the 1970s. In 1922, by order of Congress, the Secretary of War was authorized to create Statement of Service Cards for every soldier and to furnish them to the soldiers' states of enlistment. For New York, these cards are located at the New York State Archives, and obtaining one only costs one dollar plus postage.

Information included on the summary service card:

Full name and serial number
Residence
Where and when enlisted
Place of birth and age at enlistment
Organizations served in, including any transfers and transfer dates
Rank and engagements
Dates served overseas
Date killed in action and wounds (if applicable)
Person notified of death (if applicable)
Additional remarks

To obtain a summary service card, go to the order form at http://www.archives.nysed.gov/a/research/res_topics_mi_warsvc_form.shtml and print it out. Fill in as much information as you can, then mail it to New York State Archives Cultural Education Center Room 11A36 Albany, NY 12230 along with a check or money order for one dollar (per summary service card requested).
