t is our goal to list every regiment mustered into service in New York City, complete with regimental history based on Dyer's. Each entry will include as well, links to unit related websites, such as re-enactors, and hobbyists, most of which contain a good amount of history, and may contain rosters and other information helpful to genealogical researchers. 

INFANTRY

1st NY Volunteer Infantry

Known as Serrell's Engineers, the 1st was mustered in December 1861 and out on July 15th, 1865.

5th NY Volunteer Infantry

Organized in New York City, with enlistees from upstate and Long Island, the 5th served from 1861 - 1865.

9th Regiment Infantry

"Hawkins' Zouaves"

Organized at New York City and mustered in May 4, 1861. June 1861, Newport News, Va., Dept. Va. Jany., 1862, Parkes' 3 Brig., Burnside's N.C. Exp. Corps. 1862, 4 Brig., Dept. N.C. July, 1862, 1 Brig., 3 Div., 9 Corps, Potomac. April, 1863, 1 Brig., 2 Div., 7 Corps, Dept. Va. Mustered out May 20, 1863.

17th NY Volunteer Infantry

Organized in New York City, it was mustered in on May 29, 1861 for a two year term. The 17th NYVI was called the Westchester Chasseurs because a large number of its 783 soldiers came from Westchester County, New York but also included   troops from New York, Rockland, Wayne, Wyoming, and Chenango Counties.

21st NY Volunteer Infantry

 

37th NY Volunteer Infantry

Organized in New York City the 37th was mustered on June 7, 1861 and mustered out on June 3rd 1863.

39th NY Volunteer Infantry

Organized in New York City, and mustered in 28 May 1861, the 39th or Garibaldi's Guard as they were know were mustered out July 1st 1965.

47th New York Volunteer Infantry

Organized in New York City, the 47th was mustered in September 14, 1861. and out August 30, 1865

48th New York Volunteer Infantry

Part of Barton's New York Brigade, the 48 was organized in Brooklyn, New York City and Peekskill in late summer 1861also know as "Perry's Saints". A special thank you to Walter Bright for making this transcription possible!

71st NY Volunteer Infantry

"2nd Excelsior"

Organized under authority of the War Department at Camp Scott, Staten Island, New York, as 2nd Regiment, Sickles' Brigade, June, 1861. Left for Washington, D.C., July 23, 1861. Veterans and Recruits transferred to 120th Regiment, New York Infantry, July 7. Regiment mustered out at New York City July 30, 1864, expiration of term.

Regiment lost during service 5 Officers and 83 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 73 Enlisted men by disease. Total 163.

72nd NY Volunteer Infantry

"3rd Excelsior"

Organized under authority of the War Department at Camp Scott, Staten Island, N Y., as 3rd Regiment, Sickles' Brigade. Left for Washington, D. C., July 24, 1861. Veterans and Recruits transferred to 120th Regiment New York Infantry.

Regiment lost during service 11 Officers and 150 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 88 Enlisted men by disease. Total 250.

79th NY Volunteers

"Cameron Higlanders"

Organized at New York City and mustered in May 29, 1861. Left for Washington, D.C., June 2, 1861.  Mustered out July 14, 1865.

Regiment lost during service 3 Officers and 116 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 78 Enlisted men by disease.

83rd Regiment Infantry

Volunteered for three years' service. Left New York City for Washington, D.C., May 27, 1861. Mustered in at Washington June 8. 1861. Regiment mustered out at New York City June 23, 1864, expiration of term.

Regiment lost during service 9 Officers and 147 Enlisted men, killed and mortally wounded; and 2 Officers and 86 Enlisted men by disease. Total 244.

84th New York Volunteer Infantry

"14th  Brooklyn NY State Militia"

Tendered services to Government and left Brooklyn for Washington, D.C., May 18, 1861. Mustered into United States service at Washington May 25, 1861.  Regiment mustered out June 14 to date June 6, 1864.

Regiment lost during service 8 Officers and 154 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 69 Enlisted men by disease. Total 231.

127th NY Volunteer Infantry

"The National Volunteers"

Organized at Staten Island, NY, and mustered into service September 8, 1862.  Mustered out of service June 30, 1865.

Regiment lost during service 35 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 94 Enlisted men by disease. Total 130.

131st NY Volunteer Infantry

Organized in New York City, and mustered in the service of the United States for three years on September 6, 1862.  The companies were recruited under the auspices of the metropolitan police, in New York City; but a portion of Company K came from Smithtown. It was mustered out at Savannah, Ga. –July 26, 1865.

131st Regiment NYS Volunteers by Richard Ether, the Great-Great Grandson of Pvt. Bernard Ether who served with the in Co. K.

162nd NY Volunteer Infantry

"3rd Metropolitan Guard"

Organized at New York August 22 to October 18, 1862. Left for Washington, D.C., October 24, 1862; then moved to New Orleans, La.,

Regiment lost during service 8 Officers and 58 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 152 Enlisted men by disease. Total 221.

Len Dapolito maintains a website devoted to the 162nd. Len's Great Great grandfather Frances Connor served in the 162nd, and Len's site contains roster and muster information, regimental history ans lots of other information related to the 162nd.

165th NY Volunteer Infantry

The 165th New York Volunteer Infantry, 2nd Battalion Duryee's Zouaves was mustered in the United States Service at Camp Washington, Staten Island, New York, November 28, 1862.  Mustered out September 1865.

173rd New York Volunteer Infantry

"4th National Guard"

Organized at Brooklyn, New York, October and November, 1862. Left  for New Orleans, La., December 9, 1862.  Mustered out October 18, 1865.

Regiment lost during service 6 Officers and 38 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 129 Enlisted men by disease. Total 175.

174th NY Volunteer Infantry

"5th Metropolitan Guard"

Organized at New York City and mustered in November 13, 1862. Left for New Orleans, La., December 7, 1862. Consolidated with 162nd New York Infantry February 17, 1864.

Regiment lost during service. One Officer and 22 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 59 Enlisted men by disease. Total 83

Organized as 135th Infy. at Yonkers, and mustered in Sept. 2, 1862. Designated 6th H. A. Oct. 3, 1862. . Mustered out Aug. 24, 1865.

Organized at New York City Oct. 14 to Dec. 19, 1861. Transferred to 15th Heavy Arty., Sept. 30, 1863.

Organized at New York City Camp Arthur, Quarantine, Staten Island,NY, Aug. 10 to Nov. 15, 1861.  Consolidated with 9th Cavalry, Feby. 27, 1865.

5th Regiment Cavalry

"1st Ira Harris Guard"

Organized at New York City, and mustered in Aug. 15 to Oct. 31, 1861.  Mustered out July 19, 1865.

 

6th Regiment Cavalry

Organized at New York City, Sept. 12 to Dec. 19, 1861. . Consolidated with 15th Cav., June 17, 1865, to form 2nd Prov'l Cavalry.

 

11th Regiment Cavalry

Organized at New York City, Dec., 1861, to May, 1862.  Mustered out Sept. 30.

 

12th Regiment Cavalry

Organized at New York City, Nov., 1862, to Sept., 1863. May, 1863.   Mustered out July 19, 1865.

 

13th Regiment Cavalry

Organized at Staten Island, June 20, 1863.  Consolidated with 16th Cav. to form 3rd Prov'l Cav., June 23,  1865
