Peterboro Area Museum
Peterboro Area Museum

The Peterboro Area Museum is located on the east end of the village on Swamp Road. Due to having a small number of volunteers, the museum is only open on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and for special occasions such as Civil War Weekend ( the second weekend in June) and Hometown Day ( the third Sunday in July). The museum is not handicap accessible.

The museum is housed in the old schoolhouse for the Madison County Children's Home. Built in 1899, this structure has beautiful wainscoting on the walls and ceiling. It is unusual today to see wainscoting like this in its original finish .

The museum was organized in 1976. Since that time the members have acquired a large collection of 19th and 20th century artifacts. The collection includes farming implements, household items, period clothing, items relating to Smith/Miller family and much more.

Some historical records are available for research. These records pertain mostly to local families, the Madison County Children's Home, church records and school records.
