§3 Foreword
Bird's eye view of Mt. Ross (V06-08.GIF) |
It would be exciting indeed if one could reach into the years beyond memory and actually recall the early history of an area, its individuals and events.
However, this mind-control has not yet happened, so we must content ourselves, for now, with reviewing written historical research submitted by others before our time.
In Pine Plains we are fortunate to have a text concerning our area written by Isaac Huntting available to us for such research.
In 1897 he completed his "History of Little Nine Partners of North East Precinct, and Pine Plains, New York, Duchess County". Original prints of this book are still occasionally available, and also a 1974 reprint.
It is from this text, as well as from the works of several other historians (P. H. Smith, J. H. Smith, H. N. McCracken), that we have collected the earliest historical data relating to the general area now called Pine Plains, and leading eventually to the beginnings of "Mt. Ross".
