§14 We Remember Mount Ross (2)Carol Popp A 7th grade paper written by Carol in the 60's provides interesting comments by 'Mrs. Ernest Vater', sister of Dick Muller. Mrs. Vater lived in the little house overlooking the mill site and was glad to answer questions by this young author verifying the locations of buildings. -Ed. "The woolen mill was located over the bridge (coming from Pine Plains) and on the right side. It stood about 50 feet from where the newer bridge now stands". The structures on the left side of the road included saw, grist, and fulling mills, (somewhere downstream, the exact locations are not known); a cooperage, and a blacksmith shop near the road at the bridge. Also, the hamlet included a 1½ story log store which was also across the road from the mill. "The Mt. Ross Hotel was very close to the first mill. The creek was dammed up (see post card in the Historical Society collection) to supply the Hotel with places to fish, swim and boat." 1 Mrs. Vater also mentioned that Mrs. Carroll, at the Melius-Bentley place as it is known now, offered travelling herders pasture space for sheep and cows, and a stable for horses when the travelers boarded at her farm just up the road from the bridge. This convenience was still being offered in the early 30’s as remembered by several local folks. And finally, concerning the Mt. Ross RR Station: "In 1938 the railroad was having its rails removed and they took the engine apart here. I got a piece of the old RR car as it was taken apart".
